I think it's not unusual for there to be a fee for these types of competitions. Wether or not it yeilds you any real exposure... That's the question. I wonder how the artists did exposure wise in the last competition... All published artists will receive a FREE hardback "Collector's Edition". See Volume 1 below ....at the "Special Offer" price! That's the part I'm not getting. Where's the free part???

If I was as brilliant an artist as Alvinlaya it would be. :-) Go for it buddy, with your talent it's practically a lock.

Any juried Art Show has fees for entry, so this is no different. AND if you make it, free advertising for your art, although I think Expose3 is more widely distributed...

Yeah, in TRW any decent art exhibitions charge a fee for entry. Sounds like a lot of bangs for your buck, lots of exposure, if you get selected.

I think roobol was in the last one - had a look through it when our local public library got it. I think there were about 20 people in the last one and there was some very impressive stuff in there.

As pog said, it is a lot of potential bang for your buck if you get in. Alvinylaya, if 60$ isn't going to hurt your finances too much, then with your talent I'd say go for it.

i think the 20 for the first pic should be scrapped as they make money on the sale of the book anyhow. in fact they should pay for using your art imho :P

For free exposure and self advertisement, its well worth the money. I know Spectrum take out a fee as well. You should also consider Expos which is free. I recieved a couple of commissions and a job offer after Expos, so by personal experience i can say its well worth a shot. Something i find to be strange though, is that you cant send previously published images. A rule neither Spectrum nor Exposhave, and those are basically THE two most prestigious mags to be published in. With that, they rule out a lot of the best images out there, since the best stuff usually are published in several mags, or other books many times over. But go for it Alvin!

hmm, must confess i am interested, i made a personal descision to get as much exposure as possible this year. will have a flick thro my images and see which could be worth $20. Interested in info on Spectrum and Expose, anyone have links to submission guidelines?

Dragon con charges a hanging fee of $25 for a 4x4ft space. For that you get 4 days of exposure to 20,000+ people. To be seen anywhere you will pay about as much. A book is permanent and doesn't close sunday afternoon and boot you out forever. The purchaser can read at leasure and stop without worrying about who's pushing in the que behind him.

Heres Spectrum. Must point out though, that youll have to send them actual prints, and theyre not cheap. Think its around $40-45 per image and no guarantee to actually get in.

I think the deadline is already past for spectrum. The deadline was Jan. 21. They will be taking entries again in October.

Gosh, these things don't come cheap. Aye, 60 bucks is a lot for me, 20 or 30's OK. :-)

Gotta spend money to make money.....also look for venues that don't charge a fee and use those for self promotion....

Just purchased Spectrum 11 a few days ago, (I have had 10 for a while) - must say if your into fantasy/sci-fi work, its pretty freakin amazing:) I think a few Renderosity members have made it in, I know some of David Ho's work has been in there. Waiting patiently to see some of the brycers in there. Alvin- go for it man, even if it is just 1 or 2 images, I'd say you have a damn good chance of getting in.

If my art isn't good enough to promote itself it's not good enough. And as i never pay for sex i never pay for exposure. zhan: can you explain why you gotta spend money before earning? i can think of a couple of jobs that make you money without spending a dime. schemes that make you pay to earn are mostly dodgy. oh well i might be too lazy to become famous lol

Not talking about regular jobs....... Artist self promotion sometimes cost, gallery fees, juried show fees, in some cases printed materials and resumes....I have spent money over the years to enable me to get my name in front Gallery owners, One-Man show sponsors, etc. And now I make money with those investments by having Interior Designers come to me for artwork for their Clients, Galleries exhibiting my work, and getting my work in print form...so you see you have to spend some money to make money... And if you believe your art isn't good enough to promote itself, well you will never have your work shown or printed or be in demand with that attitude...people need to see it to want it, and there's where self promotion comes in....that, in some cases, not all, requires spending money to make it...=)

I'll throw $20-$40 at it, see if anything sticks, lol. Even with Project Greenlight, there is a submission fee, of course I've never won, and the comments left by my "judges" were painful, but I've spent money on MUCH less worthy things in my life without even thinking about it. (about $1000 on comic books....) AS
