I'm not sure the book was written to present any "optimistic" views of society. I think the point was we all are evil at least to a certain degree. Now, I would go about making a bottle by cutting up a cylinder into a whole bunch of parts and magnetically radial scale the the upper part until it looks right then intrude the top face to hollow it out to the desired thickness.
The book didn't have a optimistic view of society, actually the contrary, it exposed that civilization is a very thin veneer, and that in a survival situation will crumble easily, exposing the basic animal element of which humans are composed....

They came up with a cool chant on their own. "Kill the pig! Spill the blood! Basher it!" Heheheh.

lol, you'd wonder who those readers might be. Hitler? Pol Pot? Saddam? Long long time since I read it, but I suppose you could say that one message of the book (far as I can remember) is that human beings are social animals, and want to be part of groups, and will manage to form groups and survive in all sorts of adverse circumstances. One way of strengthening a group is to have a common enemy, or to pick on members who won't conform. Apart from that I don't remember enough about the book to comment. Maybe someone who read it more recently will contribute an opinion?
