I play around with the reflect, refraction and translucene shader nodes and got some interesting effects. Renders done without any transparency. If you wish to see the settings and little trick here regarding the true reflections let me know.

I will tell you see is better :) click the URL above, the first tutorial is about the reflections. I made the same way with the glass effect in the first post. Here I used ball to get it working faster for the tutorial, my english is simple so I hope you get everything right, just follow the material setting. Cath P.S if the screen is to big for user with 800x600 you can use right click with your mouse and reduce the screen size

I'll have to play with this after I take on the candle translucence effect since I've gotten off to a slow start with the ears :)

Is ok Jeremy :) Nice to see you work on! P.S the nice effect of the glass you can get using another image maps for the big ball. replace the mini ball with a prop or what ever you wish.

Wonderful examples and tut! Thank you! :o) Oh, and can one save the tut to disk somehow? Always need to go back to tuts now and then. Don't want to go searching on the net every time. May be a year before I need it again.

The plastic effect is top Stefan! I got already idea where I can use it, thank you very much!! I changed some parameters of your idea removed Refract node and what I got? nice? I set the quality of the reflection very high but you can get it under 1.0 so 0.2 will ok too.

damn it never occured to me that this method would work in P5.. we've used it for years in tS... but I thought it was just something you could do with the tS reflectance....

I love the effect in this one, I set the black ball as in the post# 22 In the Edge Blend I use a black Inner Color and not use the Specular here, for the true reflections on the ball I used the BIG ball with a window photo that simulate the room. I like this one as well :)

And here another image done using the new reflection nodes from the settings above. For the car surface I used : setting from post # 20 and # 22 Poser5 Fire-Fly rendering no textures. Thanks to pauljs75 for the free TerraSpeeder (car) to download in the renderosity free stuff. I hope you like this effect Cath

This and the tutorials on your website are great. Thanks Cath!!!

Mec4D ( ) posted Tue, 08 February 2005 at 9:08 PM

Thank you very much nakamuram :) I forgot to add that the reflection on the grund is from the BIG BALL that I used in the tutorial it reflect fragment of the Window the rendering time was 5 min. The BIG BALL is very important for the reflections so for ''inside'' as ''outside'' scenes. Thank you for your attention and if you have any question regarding my little presentation here please feel free to ask. Cath

I have to show you one more render I just finished. I used reflections nodes for every material in this scene including the mouse, self mat plastic reflect sometime the color or light from other objects. no transparency was used. I hope it give you more inspiration in your artwork. te rendering time was 15 min Cath

How about surface reflections from a pool of water?

Mec4D ( ) posted Wed, 09 February 2005 at 12:19 AM

for water and any water surfaces outside studio, use the BIG ball with a picture from [outside] as I did in image above for the atmosphere of your scene. rescale the ground and see the setting of the reflection, use turbulence node for the waves, or animated bump maps for animations. If you use the not deep water you need to use refrect node also as in post #16 but as color under the Edge Blend use just white. You can also make it transparent a 50% if you set in figure :P :)

the light that the glass take from is the atmosphere created using the BIG BALL our trick [HDRI] , I rendered the model on white ground [ not background] , the object take the light and reflection from the ground plane and the BIG BALL textures only and create very realistic effect on the surfaces without to use any transparency. The material setting for this model was take from post # 16

here is real HDRI illumination effect by HDRI Studio, as you can compare I created the same effect of the glass in Poser5 without special plugin, Poser5 is not that stupid as everyone outside the community think.lol

Cath, I have a silly question... Are you using the ball prop that comes with Poser 5 or one that you made in another program. I'm asking because the ball prop in my poser props doesn't appear to be perfectly round.

Mec4D ( ) posted Wed, 09 February 2005 at 10:47 PM

ah why silly? I used the high res ball from the Poser5 there you have 2 versions, if you don't have the high resolution use the smoth polygons option to get the poly round. Cath
