Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 7:38 pm)

Subject: Gallery and forum coordinators required!

KarenJ ( ) posted Fri, 11 February 2005 at 5:15 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 3:26 PM

Hi all, We are currently looking for one or two people to join the Renderosity Poser team as Coordinators. What does this position involve? Well, basically it means ensuring that the Renderosity TOS is applied in the Poser forum and gallery. For example, working with members to ensure their images do not break our TOS, or deleting warez posts (after the obligatory "Hi Mom!" party, LOL), and helping members with queries, e.g. "What section should I post this under" or "I cannot upload to the gallery". We are flexible on time commitment - attitude is more important than hours! - but ideally you would need to be able to log in to the site every day. You do not need to be a Poser "expert" or "professional" (otherwise I wouldn't be doing this, haha) but a basic familiarity with the program is assumed. If you are interested then please IM or email me or Sandy (SndCastie) to apply or to ask questions. Please let us know why you would want to take this position and any relevant experience (online or IRL) which you feel would help you. Also if you have a second language then please let us know as this would be very welcome! This is a non-paying position. Cheers! The Poser Team :-)

I've rinsed my eyes with bleach, but that doesn't help. Maybe if I scoop out the part of my brain that retains images like that.......where did I put my soup spoon? This place is turning into OZ. We need to arm the admins.

Even more offensive than the image (which was very explicit in every way) was the text that guy had under the description. Sick people.

While I come to this board almost daily, I don't believe that I am qualified to be a "coordinator" because it is usually late in the day when I get on. However, I wish the best to whoever is selected for the position. Many years ago, before Al Gore invented the internet (grin) I hosted my own BBS (dating myself?). It is a constant attempt to "keep it clean" and still allow the freedom of individuality. I did not see the "picture" that was posted prior to it's deletion but it sounds like one of those that I would have had to dis-allow on my BBS. To those that hold and will hold these positions, I offer my gratitude and support. Pony

I used to run my own domains and websites awhile back. I know alot about coding and being an admin. I don't envy anyone who can do a fulltime admin job though. Maybe you guys should have some scripts that would detect explict material/images and delete it before they have a chance to hit the submit button? I had a forum, if anyone was caught posting explict material on it, their account would have gone bye, bye, without warning, no questions asked.

This was really beyond explicit, and was accompanied by hateful rhetoric. Nuff said.

The jobs looked tempting, until I thought of some "expected" difficulties, and saw there was no pay involved. No thanks.

Dave-So ( ) posted Fri, 11 February 2005 at 9:52 PM

you guys should run a quota system...for every 10 posts you lock, you get a free item from the market. If you ban 5 folks a week..you can pick 2 items...and if you find and delete 10 TOS rule breaking images you can get a copy of some religious right rule book or something similar.

However -- some of us are in the unfortunate habit of saying what we think in the forums.

You can say what you think without drawing blood.

That's true.

Unfortunately, sometimes that's the only way to get the point across.

Being a forum regular pretty much requires a tough hide.

Personally sensitive people will often find themselves out of their element in the forums.

Express an opinion, and you are going to make somebody mad at you. Best be prepared to back it up.

One of the things that I like about Renderosity (and there are many, many things to like here) -- is the fact that the administration of this site protects their members from one another. At least for the most part.

That's good business, and it's good sense.

Other people don't think so.....they want the total freedom to rip somebody a new one at the drop of a hat.

I'll participate at sites where that's allowed. That requires.....following the culture.

If one is going to jump into the rough waters, then one shouldn't complain too much about the pounding that will follow.

The negative opinion of others is a fact of life for anyone who dares to stake out a position, and then defends it.

You can't let it bother you.

Take George W. Bush as an example of this fact. He's never bothered by the insults, the insinuations, or the personal slams of his enemies. He just keeps right on doing his job.

To be a good Moderator, one has to be able to show a lot of patience. Even when it requires counting to ten. Or one hundred. Or one thousand.

My hat's off to anyone that does the job well.

Dave-So ( ) posted Sat, 12 February 2005 at 7:13 AM

i would love to do the job, but I volunteered last time and I wan't selected. so up yours. my only real weakness for the position is that i can only read 10 words per minute, so it takes a long time to read the forums...thats why i always skip to the last post of a thread to make my point....but its sometimes out of context at that time...but no problem, it puts an interesting twist to the conversation. and i would never lock any post anyway...or delete any image...free speech and expression..yes..oppression and censorship NO !!!

Been there, done that, gave it up as it was taking up way too much of MY time. I do have a life (sort of) outside of Rosity and the internet. Between my job, trying to do something in Poser, photography, and trying to be a cord. here...I didn't even have time to sleep or eat. Now, if it were a paying position, that would have been a different story. Good luck to anyone that wants to take the postition.

I just can't imagine doing all that work for no pay. Do they at least give you "fringe benefits," like discounts on merchandise? Nah, that wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Do they at least give you "fringe benefits," like discounts on merchandise? Probably not. I wouldn't mind helping out with the gallery but that would be about it. ;)

Lyrra ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 1:12 AM

fringe benefits? aside from the chat boot button? ummmm .. nope. No benefits, no pay, nothing but stress. But all the stress you can take free! plus looking at EVERY single image ever posted in the poser gallery. Be nice to mods .. the job sucks :) Lyrra

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 4:55 AM

You know if the mods had a search & destroy function and every single untagged nude immediately bit the dust, I bet the artists would start tagging their own images. There ought to be a bounty on them, too. Mod with the most confirmed kills each week gets their name on the scoreboard, AND a coupon good for an icecream cone. Catching TOS violations ought to be good for cumulative vouchers... and maybe a game could be made out of that as well. Carolly Evil OverMistress of the UnderDark

KarenJ ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 5:01 AM

"Fringe benefits"? Well you do get a Renderosity.com email address... that's it I'm afraid.

I know Lyrra and Scott will appreciate this little story I'm going to tell... When I had been doing the coordinator role about 3 weeks, and I had spent an entire Sunday going through the Poser gallery - I mean a WHOLE day, meal breaks and calls of nature only! - I went to bed that night and had a very strange nightmare...

...I was being chased along the top of a strangely fractal-looking cliff, behind me was a naked woman with a sword and huge plastic-looking breasts which defied gravity. No matter her threatening stance with the sword, her expression didn't change and her eyes weren't quite focussed on me. Then after a while she morphed into a man (gotta love the unimesh) who was still naked and expressionless and who... took off his genitals and threw them at me! This missile bounced off my head and fell into the sea...

At this point I woke up, but was unable to explain to my husband exactly what was so horrible about my dream!

From that day forward, I have to check the NVIATWAS pics with my hands over my eyes ;-)

Totally true story!

Monty Python fans may recognise the similarity to the "Condemned Man" sketch at the end of "The Meaning of Life" and indeed, I had watched a rerun of this I think the previous night ;-)

cherokee69 ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 10:20 AM

What I found disturbing whan I was doing this was the mods and cords couldn't decide whether an image should be pulled or not. They tended to try to decide what the artist intended the image to be or whether this hand was touching that body part if viewed from another angle. That bull..doesn't matter if something is viewed from another angle, it's what you see posted that matters. If is looks sexually explicit, it is..no 2 ways about it, but people just couldn't make up their minds if it was or not. Way to much analizing going on.

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 10:55 AM · edited Sun, 13 February 2005 at 10:59 AM

Well, I was a coordinator for about 5 minutes (I think I set some kind of record for going in and out of the position). What I liked about it was that there is a sense of community between many of the coordinators. What I didn't like about it is that coordinators seem to become a target for some community members who appear to be on the hunt for someone to be angry at on any and every topic. I'm not sure why coordinators, moderators, administrators are considered sub-humans without feelings, and are not allowed to have a bad day or make a mistake. I am mystified by the attitude of some individuals toward people who are responding, in good will, to the concerns of other people who often will only post in instant messages because they don't want to be flamed for not agreeing with more vocal community members.

I saw, in sum, an unpleasant view of people I had previously liked and I realized I didn't want to see that side of them.

And I didn't like not being able to offer my own opnion, or not being able to defend myself when attacked...taking the high road is very difficult and I'm not at all good at it.

I admire very much the people that take on this duty. I was always treated very kindly by the other coordinators, moderators, and administrators....I didn't quit because of them. And, having seen the other side of things, I don't feel as arrogant about thinking the job has to be easy. It's not. If any of you take it on, I will understand it's because you want to do something good for the community, and I respect people who do something instead of sitting around and complaining without accomplishing anything. It's not easy, but I think the people who do it well find it overall satisfying because they have helped make the community a better place for everyone, and not just a vocal few.

One thing that has struck me is just how powerful people can make these forums. People can find the best of friends, and the brightest inspirations. People can also find crippling sadness and overpowering anger.

I daresay some people can feel more powerful here than in "The Real World." How many of us would insult people so strongly if we were standing in front of them? How many people would threaten physical violence in person? How long would we get away without it without risking arrest?

The online forums are a place where people can come to learn, and maybe even make a living, or at least earn enough to support their Poser hobby. However, they are also a place where people's dreams can die before they're ever realized.

Sometimes I look back at the angry and hurtful times. It gets so overpowering sometimes. Then I ask myself "why do you let them have this power? Why do you do things to irritate people? Why do you let them irritate you?"

I've struggled with these issues a long time. Over the past couple years, I've gotten to a point where I'm far more selective about what threads I bother to post in. If someone needs Poser help, I often respond privately. Yes, I continue to help artists, in my own venue, in an area I can control. And I work very hard not to have an emotional investment.

A moderator/coordinator's job is rough. It might be worth it if the pay was good. But I can think of better ways to volunteer my time. And I'm still trying to figure a way to make my own talents pay.

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 13 February 2005 at 7:13 PM · edited Sun, 13 February 2005 at 7:14 PM

For the record, I personally was never threatened with physical violence. I was told I should be banned, thrown off the website, and that I was stupid (among the milder appellations), but not physically threatened. I'm sure, to this day, the person who was most rabid about my dismissal has the misconception that the name calling is what caused me to leave my spot, but it was something I had decided long before. It just seems sad that some people act like bullies.

On the other hand, there are coordinators and moderators here that do an excellent job and obviously have a good relationship with the community. I have had the honor to work with many of them, and I find them very thoughtful people who are sincere about trying to do a good job. What I wish is that people would think before they attack...but if wishes were horses, I'd be cleaning a mighty big stable out right now.

I daresay coordinators/mods are not the only ones with horror stories to tell. Let's just say some folks have a habit of taking this stuff seriously, and going outside of the forums with seriously nasty stuff. It's not good for the marriage when the wife asks why you hang out with that kind of people. Now I know why most people use aliases.
