Subject: hair in poser

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 3:44 PM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 2:21 AM

I'm going to use long hair evolution as an example, since what I'm talking about is obvious on it. When using some hairs, I notice the texture ends up really well bad, and instead of normal strands, I get what look like a sharp line that should be a strand but then a faint box around it. It does this even when I switch to the higher render setting. Am I missing an option I need to check or something or am I just doing it wrong?

please post an image, state what version of Poser and render settings if you can. ::::: Opera :::::

Looks like your transparency settings are wrong. Notice the skullcap showing across the top of the forehead, too. Is your transparency falloff set to 0?

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 4:45 PM

no, it's set to 0.6 which is the default for that hair (which I got from here: http://digitalbabes2.com/dload1.html )

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 4:47 PM

The hair is designed for Poser 4, and the transparency settings sometimes don't work correctly. Try setting it to zero.

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 4:52 PM

I have, and still no go. Is there any known way to either convert them or at least muck with the settings to achive the same effect?

operaguy ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 4:59 PM

you're sure it's not a shadow? you move the light around and/or went in for a close up? ::::: Opera :::::

i can tell by looking at pic, it is a problem with transperency, not the shadows :) can you show a screenshot of material settings for the hair? and nice blue eyes, im in love!

If it's a shadow, it will go away if you render with "cast shadows" unchecked.

But I think it's transparency. I tried this hair in P5, and it worked fine for me. (It came in with transparency falloff 0, but with P5, sometimes it comes in at 0.6. This is wrong for hair. Transparency falloff is for things like glass, where you want something only partly transparent at the edges. For most transparency maps, you want falloff to be zero.)

Make sure you have transparency falloff set to zero for all parts of the hair. (See my settings, above.) If it still doesn't work, save your file, close Poser, and then get back in, open the file, and try again. (P5 has a tendency to keep old settings in memory, even when you change them.)

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:11 PM

oh, wait, I never tried for all parts, that's probably what I missed, lemme check

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:17 PM

thanks, it was falloff on all the parts. I didn't do it for all of them. thanks :)

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:20 PM

You're welcome. :-)

Another tip for making this hair look its best in P5: lower the shading rate. I usually go to about 0.05. You have to change it in both the hair properties, and in the render options. It will look a lot nicer, but it's also slower, so save it for your final render.

done with fire fly and texture filter on

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:22 PM

You should not render with texture filter on just to fix the noisy hair. You'll have that seam problem. And it makes everything look fuzzy. Change the shading rate instead!

Dave8 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 5:42 PM

k this was with Shading rate @ 0.03 and pixels samples at 8 Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Trel ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 6:46 PM

dumb question: where do you change pixel samples?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2005 at 7:39 PM

Render Options panel, center section, blue slider up near the top.

yes, and I wish I knew how. is it those settings in the material tab, or is it different for after you apply the MATs?
