Step 2: Click in the first channel next to transparency, then click the 'P' on the A channel to the right to change the material to a picture.
Step 3: Click the black circle in the first box, and load your vein map into the second box of the picture editor. Click the half white/black circle to invert it.
This makes the dark gray bits less transparent than the lighter areas. You could do the vein map in whites on a black background, but I find the grey on white easier to work with.
Step 4: Change the mapping to object top.
Step 5: Click next to specular and specular halo in the B channel. Choose a nice iridescent texture (this one is rainbow from the psychedelic menu).
Step 6: Increase the specularity value until you get the effect you want.
Step 7: Change the transparent colour to an insect wing type colour.
