Hey, here's that sphere "rack" I told you all I'd give up.

It's no big deal, just a simple model, but its rather big.....it's 2,000 spheres, so give it a minute to load up.

The deal is, the spheres are booleaned (1,000 spheres inside of 1,000 spheres). This way if I wanted to make the spheres glass with a hollowed out interior, I easily could.

As the scene file is...ALL the spheres are neutral.

Via families, you can select the Inner spheres, the Outer Spheres, and Rods. You can then select and make all the inner spheres negative, the outer ones positive, or just delete the inner spheres, whatever you want. Using the family's also makes it easier to apply materials.

*Use this for absolutely whatever you want, commercial or non-commercial, re-distribute in any way you freaking want. I relinquish any and all copyright to this scene file and all its contents to anyone/everyone.

Thanks.

my mind is bondering on what kind of abstract one could do with that. hmmm, thanks for the freebie AS but i think i'll leave that one well alone ;)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Thanks AS! But I don't think I'll bother. Sphere #875 is 0.021bu out of line...........

"it's 2,000 spheres, so give it a minute to load up." Then give it a minute (or two) whenever you want to select one of the families, and another minute (or three) if you want to do anything to them :)

Its not so bad once the scene is loaded up, BUT...I STRONGLY suggest taking your wireframe resolution down to 8 or 16. AgentSmith

Lol....every sphere is absolutely perfectly spaced....;o) (through the miracle of multi-rep) AS

Why - I just kept seeing these in high render scenes, decided to build one, then I ended up using it for the community page graphic. No reason why, truly. I was just screwing around. AS

Did you have to use some Algebra to design it?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 09 March 2005 at 8:04 AM

Pretty simple, everything is just spaced 20 units apart. With multi-rep, you could create this thing in a matter of minutes. AS

The reason i asked for the math, I saw a similar object somewehere on the net, and there was 5 lines of Algebra explaining how it was done. I suck at math.

10 10 x 10 ---- 1000 Why don't you make the rods hollow like the spheres?

Size everything up, put your camera inside, it could look like an Escher.

thanks Agent Smith...another render of your multireplicate cube

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 10 March 2005 at 3:49 AM

You're welcome. ;o)

Why didn't I make the rods hollow?...Beacuse I don't like 1 week long renders, lol.

The rods can be made hollow easy;

*Select all cylinders (using the family color)

*In Attributes, make them all positive. Apply.

*Then, ctrl+d to duplicate them.

*The duplicates will automatically be selected, best give them their own family color.

*Select the duplicates attributes and make them negative & make them smaller than what they currently are. (maybe take the XYZ down by 2 units each, for example). Apply.

*That should do it, the rods are already in groups, so the boolean should already work. (from what I remember)

NOTE;

How to simulate a Rod (or even a sphere) as hollow without doing all this booleaning??

Easy...just give whatever glass material you are using a refraction of (around) 76. (and it renders faster than booleaning)

;o)
