Subject: Who is the Undisputed Master of Character Creation?

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 1:19 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 11:17 AM

I'd like to see if there is a consensus about who is the king of the forum when it comes to taking 3D geometry and converting it into Poser characters. So everybody, who's Kungfu is the best? -SMT (I might have work for you)

Everyone's Kungfu is different ;-) TBKoen, ScottA, PhilC, Anton, bushi, Mobius (and many more) are all good. The choice is a matter of style. -JH.

Hmm...maybe I need to be more specific. If I were to present an obj file of a human figure, who would I turn to to turn the figure into a Poser character? -SMT

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 1:37 PM

Any of the names I gave could do it.

chromecafe ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 2:37 PM

that question is like saying who wants to start a flame war if I where you I would lokk through the free stuff or the store and make a decision that way just my opinion but something like this could easily start something JD

smallspace ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 2:53 PM

not my intention at all. I, myself, have no experience taking 3D meshes and converting them for use as Poser characters. (props, yes...characters, no) I find even the advanced user's guide to be inadequate. Therefore I would like to turn to a "pro" for a possible project. Someone for whom this type of work is "old hat" -SMT

hey.... what, no clinth, debra, and me? for humans, skip me, debra, and scott. hmm, well, i could possibly do a human. small, go on over to the character creators forum and post that you want to hire somebody, there. you can ask for credentials, but i wouldn't go asking who's best or not ;)

It must be the creative talent in everybody that makes em so sensitive ;-)

...hmp! feels ignored

ScottA ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 7:55 PM

Why is making meshes into figure's still considered a black art? It boggles my mind. There is nobody on the face of this earth who can't learn how to do it. If you can install Windows and an Internet connection. Then you're smart enough to make your own Poser figure's. Actually. You'd be over qualified ;-) I never understood people saying it's hard. It isn't. It's as easy as falling out of bed. ScottA

You wouldn't believe the trouble I have falling out of bed :) -SMT

Apologies for my whining. I just kinda hoped my name would be more synonymous with "Actual People" creation by now. (And the Susan Lucci Award goes to...) -Darth_Logice

ScottA ( ) posted Mon, 15 January 2001 at 9:24 PM

Heh. Don't feel bad Darth. Jeff just mentioned those people because he taught most of them how to make figure's. Including me. It wasn't a list of the best. Just the one's he deals with most often. ScottA

I would agree in a sense that character creation is not all that difficult, but that's kind of like saying it's not too hard to dig a hole. The question is, how big is the hole? Creating a character is kind of like that, especially if you're creating it from new geometry. Sure, you can create it, but then you have to spend hours and hours tweaking joint parameters until everything works just right, and then more hours creating morphs, then having to go back and do some of the above over again because you found a flaw. It's a lot of simple steps, but the sheer volume of things to do can be daunting. I am working on a character right now, and I think I spent a couple of days just tweaking JPs for the hands.

Darth_Logice ( ) posted Tue, 16 January 2001 at 8:54 AM

Wait a minute, I misread the question... taking geometry and making a cr2...this I can't do at all...I'm going to go crawl into a hole now. How embarassing! -Darth
