Subject: New camera ???

TwoPynts ( ) posted Sat, 12 March 2005 at 12:41 PM ยท edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 4:17 AM

Well, 3 months after getting my Olympus C5050 on eBay, I'm on the market for a new camera again. See the attached link if you don't already know what happened to it. I'm looking to keep it under $1000 and I'd like to get at least 5 megapixels. Quality and versatilty is important, I loved the C5050's super macro mode. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should look into next? Should I just get another C5050, I was pretty happy with it. Or should I move up to somehing nicer like a Rebel XT or Olympus E300. All input is welcome, especially if it from personal experience. Thanks! --Kort

The Rebel XT looks pretty sweet in my book! Its been poppin up in the US at some retailers since it was announced. The DSLR route would probably be your best bet...as these cameras can be expanded by additional lenses, but then you have to invest more money in them! (for said lenses)! More of a learnin curve most likely too! I don't think anyone can really tell ya what cam would be right for you though! When it comes down to it...it's up to you! It has to feel right in your hands and something you enjoy using! Go try'em some out and see what "CLICKS"

Yep I agree with above I think it is such a personal thing that it is impossible to make recommendations what suits one ideally will not suit another. I don't know about where you are but if you are thinking DSLR Canon 300D's/Rebel have been reduced enormously here in UK. Almost tempted me - :))

If you've used 5050, I'd recommend E-300, as the learning curve is not much different. I'd also recommend you to replace the kit lens with something a bit better. Pity they don't sell the 1454 with it. OTOH, they've had E-1 on action sale here in Croatia, with just that lens, with the price almost the same as E-300 kit. And E-1, although 5MP, is better than E-300. So if you can find a similar action sale wherever you are, it might be worth looking into. I haven't had that Eos 350D in my hands, but I suppose I'll see it when it appears in the Croatian market. What happend to your 5050? erlik (an owner of 5050 :-))

The Rebel XT/350D (UK) 8MP is a cut down version of the 20D so I am sure it will be a cracker, it has had very good preliminary reviews. My friend has the Nikon D70 which is also an excellent DSLR Another friend has to Canon 20D, fantastic and probably best in its class at present. As will be the Rebel XT I am sure.

I was a Nikon fan for film cameras but became an Olympus fan with digital Gerhard. I appreciate all the feedback I've been getting. I'm not sure why the link did not show up the first time but here it is again. I know it is hard to advise another as to what camera they should get, but your own experiences is what I was after so any and every input here is appreciated. Thanks for all your support and friendship. --Kort

Well I can really recommend going DSLR, since I bought my 300D Rebel, my interest in photography was been renewed. I take a camera everywhere I go now. I have sold prints of sports events that I have shot, and even had a coach from a HS in a town 90 miles away, contact me. He wants to hire me to come shoot his team. It has been a fun ride so far. The 300D is a good camera, but recently mine died and had to send it back to Canon (it was under warranty). Well I had a double header baseball game to shoot. So I used that as an excuse to by the 20D. Boy this camera is sweet and fast! If you are looking at staying under $1,000, then I would recommend the 300D and use the difference in price from the XT to buy more lenses. The XT is a much better camera, but the Rebel will make a great camera for some time. If you can stretch your budget a little get the XT and another lens, the kit lens is ok, but you will want something with a little more reach.

BTW, if you go with EOS 300D, it might be good to look around for that firmware hack, which will upgrade it to one of the higher-end Canon DSLRs. I forget which one exactly.

good luck with your decision, Kort!!! perhaps Mike's suggestion???? that was too funny!!!

LostPatrol ( ) posted Sun, 13 March 2005 at 6:15 AM

Ok a little off topic, but whilst using a firmware hack may have some advantages, it is a do at YOUR OWN RISK thing. If a firmware hack screws up your camera, any warrantee may be void. It does enhance some features and makes the 300D essentially a 10D except for the hardware differences.

"Ok a little off topic, but whilst using a firmware hack may have some advantages, it is a do at YOUR OWN RISK thing." Oh, I thought it goes without saying. That's why I used the word "hack" and not something like "upgrade".

Erlik Yes for many that may be true, but IMO it is important to remember that there are people of all levels that read these posts, and what is obvious to you, I and many others, it may not be to a beginner.

True. OTOH, in all honesty, even the regular, legit actions can go horribly wrong. :-/ (Ask me about the time I tried formatting a diskette with a program called VGA Copy.)

Yes, do let us know what you decide.... I never make recommendations for cameras..... as Simon and Onslow pointed out it's a very personal thing to me too.... my needs are surely not the same as everyone elses and vice versa... that's why there are so many choices... I will say though that after getting my dslr (D70) I will never use any other type of digital camera again.

I am, therefore I create.......

I've heard good things about the D70, it was on my list of considerations. I'm leaning towards the C8080 now, but I'll start a new thread to discuss that. Thanks for sharing your experience!

snigger he he he - Michelle "uses" her digital camera coz she likes her vice versa and her needs are different!!! he he he. Explains those 'long lens' preferences too ;-) Personally I like the extending lens on my 4900... Soooo phallic... uh-huh... (",)
