They said it would be on a first preorder basis's this time so will wait and see when it says its been shipped. Sharen go into your e-on account and see if you can find your order. I would be surprised if anyone has received a full copy yet as they just hit the road today. The people who already have Vue Infinite are most likely beta testers.
To be clear about beta testing - we are not getting a full copy for free :) The copy we are beta testing will expire after a while. That and the fact that we have to deal with a larger number of bugs than the final version :) We are just getting an early view of the software but we will have to pay for it like everyone else if we want a full copy of it.
Beta testing is a voluntary process. You get to use the software for free for a while - not to keep it. If you want the equivalent software for free, there is always the way of Blender :)
There are several benefits to beta testing.
Firstly, you get to try out the software early so when the final release comes you are productive straight away.
Secondly, you get to assess the software in depth early on which saves time and costly mistakes later.
Next, some of us derive satisfaction from playing with software. It's a very personal thing. There's an intellectual buzz from troubleshooting or the simple acquisition of more experience on certain types of software.
Fourthly, despite the best efforts of some unscrupulous commercial interests, the Internet's communal spirit from its early days still exists. Some of us feel that whilst we can't give back directly to those who've given to us in the past, we can contribute to the IT / Internet community generally today in other ways. Beta testing is one of those ways.
Finally, as a consumable product, software is unique. There are a huge variety of complex environments in which it has to perform, not one but a set of functions. Add in the complexity of the relationships between hardware, software and OS and there is no way that in house testing could possibly catch as many issues as user testing. Beta testers therefore contribute their own time / effort partly for the selfish reasons (as above) but also to help produce a better product for everyone.
I can understand how beta testing does not appeal to some (OK to many!) but please don't feel bad for those of us who do it and who don't receive a free copy.
In over 20 years in IT, I've beta tested innumerable products and only ever received a free copy of a program on two occasions. But I don't feel hard done by at all as I've had great fun and gained a wealth of experience doing it plus made a few friends along the way.
Oh yeah, my copy of V5I was delivered at 1000 (UK) this morning via UPS.
Cheers,
Mark
There are several benefits to beta testing. And do not forget the best pleasure of all! By beta testing, you are in close contact with the creators during the development stage, and this means that you CAN actually influence the product in the way it develops! I would like to give a little secret (I hope I do not do something wrong - time has passed and I think this is something I can give away) :-) : back in the days of Vue 4 beta testing, I suggested -quite near the end of the beta stage- that the stars (a new feature then) should be available coloured as an option, and not just white. Well, my suggestion was accepted, and Vue 4 featured, as a quite late change, the coloured stars! Of course this kind of thing does happen only rarely, but sometimes it does. So if you do the beta tester, you CAN actually influence the software you love the most, in a direction that you wish! Orio
I was very pleasantly surprised to be asked to be a beta tester, back on Feb 25th (so not many weeks ago, at least for me). I saw it as a nice chance to get my hands on a time-limited copy of an admittedly buggy V5I and hopefully help eon with their development. There was no commitment to spend a minimum time working with it - although I did spend a lot :-), and so I certainly wouldn't expect to receive a free copy. The only actual requirement was to keep shut about it until the release date.
