Subject: To crop or not

Sometimes I wonder about cropping and how effective it is. I believe there is nothing wrong with post cropping, but still try to maintain it in cmaera. This one is a prime example.

I think you should NOT crop....what a beautiful photo by the way!!!

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

think you answered yourself with the larger image :] or was that more an observation then a question... losing momentum... eyes are getting verrrrrrrrrry sleepy

I actually messed up on that and pasted the wrong large image. My thinking was that cropping out all the uneccesary landscape and parts of dock.Keeoing just the boat and piers tight to the frame. Here's the original out of cam. small though

Zacko ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 3:05 AM

Yep, number 3 is the one to choose. No question about it!!! But i dont see no harm in keeping that boat at the left either and only crop off at the bottom. Thats only my opinion of course #:o)

Hehe well thats a good example but you would see the distractions in the viewfinder a good point here is if you had a zoom you could do this better than moving up or back with a fixed focal length and maybe stepping forward here yer in the drink!!

#3 is the one for sure for me!!! that's a damn fine photo, doug! ok, this brings me to another question about making a good compo in camera. i have a hard time seeing thru my viewfinder a lot of times. today was one of those days. it was soooo sunny, and sometimes i just can't see all the details while i'm shooting. anyone else have the same problem?

TwoPynts ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 9:29 AM

file_203002.jpg

There is always that problem, yes. You just have to do your best and take a few shots if viewing conditions are not optimal. I'll say it again. Compose the image as best you can before you take it, but if cropping will make it better afterwards, I'm all for it, esp. for the web where resolution is not such an issue. I'm gonna go against the current here and say I like image 1. I think it has the most impact. If you left the bottom in like you have it in the full image, I think it would be perfect. Allow me to demonstrate and let the flamming begin! ;]

no flames, just appears too tight, a matter of personal taste then :]

TwoPynts ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 11:46 AM

:] No, I'm right! (j/j) Well, I would like the do like the 3rd one too, but with all the vertical elements I still gotta go with 1b. ;^P

Too be honest, for me, all 3 work.... the original definitley had some distractions, so no matter which crop you decide I think will be fine...... :~)

I am, therefore I create.......

DHolman ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 2:35 PM

Yea ... #3 for me too. Composition is there with no distractions. Stuff to the left and bottom on the original was way too distracting, taking way from the overal image. -=>Donald

ReBorneUK ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 3:35 PM

I'll stay in agreement - Numero Tree!! Nice model boat, btw. I hope it was a model, coz if it wasn't I wouldn't want THAT sized bird sh!tt!ng anywhere NEAR me!!! (",)

DJB ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 4:21 PM

Not a model...the piers were closer to me than the boat. Boat is about 30 metres away

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 4:39 PM

Yep yep, definitely number 3! No doubt!! Amazing shot yep!

guslaw ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 6:16 PM

I'm gonna go against popular opinion and vote for #1. I think it emphasizes the main subjct, the bird and piers. The uncropped and the lightly cropped horizontal version (#3) appear to be almost cut into perfect quarters by the horizon line and the vertical line of the piers/boat masts. I prefer #1 to #2 and #3. The uncropped version definately needs to be cropped to get rid of the garbage at the bottom and the small bright white boat way over on the left. (Just my opinion)... BTW - I agree with most of you. It's best to compose and crop in the frame but sometimes that's just not possible or practical.

Nilla ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 7:03 PM

I like number three and I also like the crop that Two Pynts did. Love the reflections, beautiful image! Brenda :)

Jeez man!! U cut the masts of the boat!! What's the point in that? Like this, it has no interest anymore! U ruined it! This USED to be an artistic shot and now it looks like a bad family holidays pic!! Jeez!! O_o

DJB ( ) posted Fri, 18 March 2005 at 9:30 PM

Not bad dtp, but I sort of like a little more of the piers/pylons in it. Gives a bit more height. LOL@Pascale...No worries...I bet she is being critical in a friendly way. Right^^^^^^^

Ok pascale U might right on what u are saying about the cuting of the mast of the boat, but my interest is not on the boat but the post and the bird this is the focal piont 1 I see in the pic my self and so the boat for my becomes secondary. That is your Point of view and I personally do not contempt it cause is your point of view... and that is d way I see IT alohaaaaaaaaaaa.....

The 3 Shots look just right...always a fondness for Nautical Scenes....and...dtp...means no harm....a pity that whatever one with a lack of English Writes....is a Target for Fun making....I can see this Forum slipping once again into ridicule of others.

ReBorneUK ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 12:32 PM

Tedz, you miss the full irony here - the implied lack of understanding comes from someone who's first language isn't English either...... grins Compare it this way - go into a Translator site and translate a sentence into another language, then cut & paste that and translate it back into English.... things get confuddled very easily. I can understand Tibs, she's very impulsive and writes what she thinks at the time, quite a bit like myself. 99 percent of the time, I'm sure it isn't meant in a nasty way (I hope!), it's just the way she comes over... Like me, she does (and will) take a lot of flak and is expected not to be upset about that, even when sometimes the flak is unexpected and sometimes completely misdirected. A few months back I got a comment over MSN about your good self from a newbie who thought that the way you went on about Aliens and the Mothership etc was pathetic and immature, and that you went way over the top with it. I defended you then by pointing out, quite rightly, that it takes different people to make a healthy community, and that blend is something that has to grow and mature around old and new members alike. Tedz, I hope that we are now all comfortable enough with each other to actually use names instead of describing people by their actions - it's obvious who you mean to everyone here, why not have the decency to direct the comments directly to the people in question? We're old enough to take responsibility for our actions, y'know ;-) peace and harmony all round (",)

"we're old enough to take responsibility for our actions"
& old enough not to alienate, antagonize & underhandedly insult people, as you just did once again to Tedz & Doug, or use "not understanding English" as an excuse nor should you take it to heart so hard!

must you always be right Mike? I KNOW you can be nice, is it really so hard? We want you to have fun & interact here but come on... hard to believe you don't see it... sigh

"I take it threads are no longer allowed to go off topic?"
it's called respect

ReBorneUK ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 1:25 PM

Cynlee, the only answer I can give is that your comment isn't fair knowing that I am unable to reply without reprimand. All I can say is that I have re-read my comment and see no place where I even try to alienate Tedz, in fact I show an example where I defended him. This actually happened, though I cannot prove it. I only replied as I found Tedz' comment insulting to both me and Tibs, who as I said probably means well a lot more than people seem to think. I have the utmost respect for other members, as long as the respect is mutual. (",) I ask that, if it is possible, Doug does move this elsewhere, as he points out it is drastically going off-topic. Once again I state, I didn't take it off topic, either. As for locking it, I feel that would only cause more resentment by all parties. Suppression of freedom isn't demonstrative of a democracy.

cynlee ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 1:39 PM

but why bring it up at all... "...was pathetic and immature"? sure that made him feel better but he can speak for himself as well as the rest of us... nevermind... i can see this is going nowhere & certainly don't want to get your hackles up any further... we like having you here, you know photography, have a good eye & can be pretty funny... there's no suppression of freedom, just a reminder... i won't say another word here :P phhht

Last time I got into conflict with you....You Deleted Your Gallery.....please....I do not need one such as Yourself, to Champion Me....for whatever reason...and will walk away from the Forum ...and You....as You constantly look for Agro...I would not want such conflict in real Life....and...certainly don't want it in a Forum.....and....when the Crapo starts to hit the Fan....You Portray Yourself as ....a Victim. Make what You want out of this Statement....but, You tend to bring out the worst in Me. ReBorneUK ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 2:09 PM · edited Sun, 20 March 2005 at 2:18 PM

sigh Please see, I didn't say it, it was the words of someone else - I didn't agree with it, quite the opposite as I stated. Tedz is human, I am human and Pascale is human. We are all sometimes hurt by what people say, but that doesn't mean we should never know about it. If I wanted to offend Brian I could have done it properly, as well you know - and as for underhand, I can be more devious than to come up with THAT as well.

You know, just because I act funny here all the time doesn't mean I laugh at everything you guys say to / about me y'know. FFS, I HAVE FEELINGS, and when I read a post attacking myself or a friend IT HURTS. Just coz I'm so f****ing full of bravado all the time doesn't mean you guys can't bring me close to tears with some of the sh!t that gets thrown at me whether it's always meant or not. More so lately, it seems, and with less and less justification.
Mud sticks and all that? Well, sometimes you have to get dirty dragging other people out of the mud.

Above you see an example of me being berated for trying to justify someone else's attitude for no other reason than I think I understand them. This, people, comes 2 days after receiving an IM of thanks for the work I do here from the same moderator.
What is right?
The same morals drive me on both sides; I don't suddenly change how I want to appear; expect me to be (like everyone else in the world) imperfect at times, but please don't ask me to sit silent if I think something is wrong just for the fear of a Mod Warning or a Thread Lock warning.

Doug, I have said it before both publicly and privately, and I repeat myself, You Are Doing A Sterling Job Here.
But you are as perfect as me, and just coz your a mod doesn't mean that what you sometimes do and say doesn't hurt, and that every decision you make is right. At risk of insulting you, if anything we are both as bad as each other at times.... ;-)

To hell, push the big button on me if you want, but please move these posts from here first. On that I totally agree.

(",)

Btw, Bri, Crossed posts. The agro at the time I left was co-incidence. Dee was the reason I left, just as I turned up again when she gave up as moderator. I have nothing against that being public knowledge.... :-) 2nd edit : and yes, sometimes I do feel like a victim, as above shows. Here I finish. peace

I'm amazed about how a 'lil and innocent O_o comment of mine created such a mess!! It was straight from the heart and didn't intend to hurt anyone!! Beside, it was true! ;P

DJB ( ) posted Sun, 20 March 2005 at 2:36 PM

I do not insult people though Mike.I would never intentionally hurt you and do not see how I have. I would have not brought up anything about Tedz...(who the heck cares if someone said something to you in MSN about him.) That is not for us to know. To me it could be seen as an embarrassment. He can play all he wants with the mothership and the characters. It does not hurt anyone.More..gives us a laugh.I enjoy it. You can be a funny guy too,and should not take to heart so much . I will never attack you verbally. I will never discuss anything someone else might say to me about you in public. Now as our forum was on the way to being a fun place with many good features keeping us busy, like Simon(sorry about my Simone typo) There are some good interactions with all the new members we are having come into the forum. Let's try to put this behind. For the record I also believe people have a right to speak about what is on their mind. I just try to use a bit of common sense on what I will say in public. There is now and before I was a Moderator that i avoided replying in certain threads as if I have nothing positive to add to it I say nothing. Let's turn the page now. A good day to you all and will see you all when I get back from a nice day visit with my mom.
