Subject: How would you move stuff from P5 to P6 painlessly?

WadeTripp ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 4:28 PM · edited Wed, 22 January 2025 at 5:22 PM

Any advice for moving geometry, libraries, textures, and etc... from P5 on one drive to P6 on another drive.

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 4:34 PM

I don't have my copy of P6 yet but I imagine I will just copy the entire P5 runtime over to P6 as an additional runtime. I could be wrong and someone will probably be along to tell me soon!!! [lol].

I know how I would do it. I'd select the folder RUNTIME in Poser5 and COPY it to the desktop then would link it to P6. Only after I was sure everything works fine, then I would delete the RUNTIME folder in P5 and move the copy to wherever I want it to be.

Or you could keep your Poser 5 runtime and just point Poser 6 to it in the library "add runtime" in Poser 6

Well I don't know about Wade but I don't intend keeping Poser5 installed once I make sure Poser6 works fine. And if I'm not going to use it, I don't see one good reason to keep it on my computer and I it is installed in Program Files, I'd prefer to remove the whole folder because I don't like for my Program Files folder to be full of folders not containing actual working programs.

This is how I did it... I copied everything from Geometries from P5 to P6, but said "no" to any overwrites. I did the same with Textures. I selectively copied stuff from the Libraries that I wanted. I still have ProPack installed however and that's my main Runtime, so I'm really just tightening up the P6-specific content. I don't need P5 and P6 both installed either. Regardless, I have everything backed up beyond this on cds.

If you're not going to have multiple Runtimes, there's only ONE good way to do it. FIRST create a full COPY of the P5 folder, with all interesting files - the whole Runtime, all your texs and the lot - and then install P6 on top of it, in effect upgrading. This allows P6 to overwrite files it needs to update for UI etc. If you do it the other way round, first install a clean P6 and later add P5 files to it, you may inadvertently overwrite a critical P6 file with an older P5 file somewhere in Runtime, for instance. P6 may fall over. Don't ever take that chance. I did it this way now, (the way outlined above) and I also did it last time - from P4 to P5. This way, with a single Runtime, I've never had problems with INJ files not working in P5 etc. :] Fish

i think i might uninstall p5 (leaving all my runtime and other intact. relabel it and then install p6 and link the libraries to it.

WadeTripp ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 5:25 PM

Last time I copied it, I messed everything up with Python script. I am trying to fix it and just turned everything into a mess. I hope that I do not hose my system and/or poser

To just link your P5 runtime library to P6, go to the topmost folder in the library window. Then press + and select your P5 runtime folder.

To link all of your P5 runtime libraries to P6, open RuntimeprefsLibraryPrefs.xml of P5 and P6 in a text editor. Then, copy all <ContentFolder ... /ContentFolder> from the P5 config and paste them to the P6 config. If the first ContentFolder entry of P5 reads folder="Runtimelibraries" replace it by the complete path of your P5 Runtime.

If you want to uninstall P5, first move the geometries, libraries, and textures of your P5 Runtime folder somewhere else. Uninstall and then move them back to the Runtime folder. (If it was deleted during uninstall, create it again.) Then you won't have to care about any file references with an absolute path.

Of course, you also can use tools for organizing your Runtimes like my Poser File Organizer, available at the Renderosity store.

Why uninstall P5? There's no need. And NEVER overwrite P5 without at LEAST making a temporary copy of it sompelace! Eek! :] Fish

Jackson ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 5:59 PM

"Why uninstall P5? There's no need." Well, say you have P5 installed on your C drive but you want to install P6 on your J drive. And, after you see P6 is okay, you don't want to keep P5 hogging space on C. You'd want to uninstall it. At least I would.

HDDs are so inexpensive now, why not just add another (internal or external) storage device? JMVHO - ICBW. ;=]

Exactly, Geep. For my photography business I just bought a Western Digital 250 gig HD for 80 bucks after rebates. Which is why I have a J drive ;)

Latexluv ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2005 at 6:53 PM

Yeah, this is going to be fun. I still load everything, purchased or free download in my P4. I still use it for compositing, applying morphs, trying out poses, ect. I have only a few things that are P5 specific, installed into P5. And now here comes P6 in the mail anytime now. I think when I'm confident with P6 (hoping it doesn't intimidate me too much). I'll copy the P5 content into P6. But I'm still keeping P4 where the major bulk of my stuff is.

Because what seems inexpensive to some of you might be too expensive for some of us.

It is counter-productive to keep everything in one Runtime. This will slow down P5 (and almost certainly P6). Make a new Runtime folder on the extra HD and move the sub-directories from the C drive runtime into it. As long as the directory structure of the Runtime is intact, P5 (and P6) can access the content properly. Manage the multi-Runtimes more like you manage normal Windows directories. By all means, break free of the P4 filing habits! Use deeper sub-directories. Access is bogged down by bloated shallow runtime folders. 200 files in ...propsweapons will be much slower access than the same 200 files in ...propsweaponsswords+guns+knives+etc.
This also makes it easier to find the props.

This is not phrased right. It should read "If you WANT TO afford Poser..." ;o)

What about the DAZ stuff that wants/need to be in your main "Runtime" Folder? Do we need to re-install all those? Any clues welcome.

Only the ChanVis / Deltas of morph injections need to be in your main Runtime folder. They still have to be there for Poser 6. But you don't need to reinstall them, it's enough to copy the !DAZ folder from your old Runtime/libraries to your new one. If you don't want to use your old Poser version anymore, you can move it.
