Subject: Which one?

I'm choosing a postcard type of image and found these on my hard disk from when I was playing with E-1. I guess that I burned both by setting the ISO to 200 but it was that or have the head too dark. Still, which one would _you_ choose?

i find them both beautiful, but if i had to choose it would be the first one!

ReBorneUK ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 11:13 AM

Yeah, definately the first one too. So much impact... the second is good, but just too much in the picture to take away from the main swans. The only thing that bothers me with the first one though, is how close the would be to the bottom of the pic with that space above him. Hmmm. (",)

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 11:22 AM

Don't understand. What would be close to the bottom of the pic? BTW, I forgot to say that the lens was the Zuiko 100-400mm and I was imporessed with the clarity and sharpness.

I guess he thinks faster than he types. As usual I'll go against the trend and choose the bottom. I think it works better as a postcard, I like the fact there is more of a scene and definately luv the way both swans have their heads tilted the same way. 2

I agree with Kort here! I really like both shots, but for a postcard, I'll go for the second one too! ;)

LOL@Kort! ;) Hehe! I just hope it's not too confusing Erlik since, so far, u've got 2 in favour of the first one and 2 in favour of the second one! Not really helpfull huh! ;)

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 12:33 PM

Oh, well, I was a bit in the favour of the second one already. :-) But further comments are still welcome.

If it helps, the blown out whites on the swan's backs are not as apparent on the second one. On the first, my eye gets drawn into all that white.

And I understood what ReBorne meant. Postcard size. I guess they are 2:3, while the photos are 3:4. So, when cropped, the first swan will bump his head against the edge. Or something. :-)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 12:49 PM

Ahhh, it all comes clear now. It makes me wonder if I should toggle the function in my camera to change the ratio to 2:3, but then I might miss something. ;]

lol - yup, my fingers work faster than my mind. You haven't noticed ;-) I meant - the swan - . lol On the first pic it would be quite close to the bottom, leaving the bigger area above it empty. Obviously this can be cropped to suit.... :-D (",)

randyrives ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 3:48 PM

Well I would have to chose the 1st one also. But I like the interplay of the 2 swans in the 2nd one. It is all the other birds in the background that I find distracting.

broatch ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 4:47 PM

well i like both, helpful aren't I...lol

Much better indeed!!!

broatch ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2005 at 7:55 PM

yep...lol must get to grips with photoshop elements a bit more but then I am a bit of a heathen when it comes to photography, if I don't get it first time then I did not get it. I don't like cheating...lol but in this case it does work very well

Michelle A. ( ) posted Fri, 25 March 2005 at 2:01 PM

I preferred the first.... but with all the extraneous clutter removed from the background on the second I now like that one better....

I am, therefore I create.......

The more I look, the more I like it: This is a crop of the original upper picture. See the drops of water? That swan was ... ten metres from me. And in the lower pic, with the pair, that whitish dot on the bill of the lower swan is another drop of water. The pair was something like 15 metres away. A colleague has Canon 20D with a great lens (I don't remember which one exactly), but these are quite comparable with the pictures he takes with a more expensive camera and lens. So, maybe I'm over-enthusing, but if you buy an E-System camera, be certain to buy the Zuiko 100-400 (50-200) mm, any which way you can. It costs a little less than thousand euros in Croatia. More interesting, Olympus is going to release a 180-500mm 1:2.8 lens. I can hardly wait to see it. But I'm afraid of the price, because their 600mm telephoto costs a bit less than 9000 euros. Way out of my range. PS Yeah, I know, now somebody will tell me that this performance is nothing extraordinary. :-)

Ah nice crop!! Great details! I just love these drops!! ;)

Erlik ( ) posted Fri, 25 March 2005 at 4:26 PM

Hey, what do I know... I have never tried a real live professional Nikon, for instance, with appropriate lenses. Just that Coolpix 8700 which is, ultimatively, nothing to write home about. My Olympus 5050 is better than that, although it has less megapixels. G6 is better than that. But I don't know the professional range of their cameras and lenses. Or Canon's, for that matter. I tried to get my grubby little hands on that professional 14 MP Kodak, but the distributor orders one only when somebody buys it. Which means, never, or maybe not even then. :-)
