Hey all, I am going to start making more props for poser Like this table and stuff. Now I don't know much about Poser so you will have to help me out here. This table is 3.3 megs in Rhino, but when I export it into Poser as a obj, it needs to be 10 megs before it looks good. Is this file size to big for you guys? What's the deal with Poser. Why does it need such a big file? Comments?

It's not Poser. It's the Wavefront.obj format that makes the files so big. MAX Lightwave Rhino C4D ETC. All have native file formats that do a much better job of compressing the files to smaller sizes. Now you can see how hard it is to make quality stuff that's under 2meg. You are an excellent modeler. I've seen you rhino stuff. But you have yet to meet the challenge of making great stuff that's low res. Then and only then. A Jedi will you be ;-) ScottA

heyas; yes, ten meg for a table is too much! ten megs for a full figure is a bit much! :) you need to find a more efficient way of making the rhino nurbs to obj polygon transition, to keep the mesh smooth where it needs, but low-poly where it doesn't. the flat table top, for example, could be... well, except the rounded edges, one big square! boom, one polygon. :) as for the edges, don't go nuts chamfering all that, because poser will automatically smooth corners (sometimes too much!), so you can get away with a semi-chunky looking transition there. make the leg cross sections use as few vertices as possible, and stretch the distance between cross sections as far as you can without making it a zig zag. oh, there's a very good rhino tutorial about the nurbs to mesh conversion... now i forgot the name of the guy who wrote it, but i saw it on the rhino page. see if you can find it; it's very helpful.

I think I got it. It's down to 1.75 as a obj and 1 meg pp2. Thanks for the input

Hy Spike, cool you start to poserize your excellent creations. I cross my fingers and would only say, skull. You would make a lot of people happy. Oh, me too. SHARKEY

That is a NICE piece of furniture... i get a bit freeked if I have to go over a Mb for a prop... max for me would be 3Mb unless all I wanted to render was the prop. I get maxed out on memory with 12Mb Vickie with 1Mb hair and a 4MB Poser Man and maybe 5Mb of sundry props plus a few megs for textures... what is that? 24-30Mb for an entire scene. That makes sense I guess, my system has 60Mb available RAM. Here is my wish... good chairs! My scenes usually revolve around a figure and a kitchen style chair... it is way hard to find good basic Thonette style bentwood cafe chairs and such. I would totally appreciate some chairs like that, or colonial, anything reasonably light and as you would find in an artist's studio. I don't have the skills to model a trash can myself.

Momodot, Tony Lynch has made some terrific chairs--and probably would be open to creating what you need if you mentioned it. I'm not sure if he's posted them here or not--you would find them in the Bryce Freestuff if they are here--you will find them in Bryce Freestuff at 3DCommune

BINGO! Thank you! The Tony Lynch chairs look fabulous... I'm such a modeling know-nothing it never occured to me to look over in the other forums! Didn't know there was file compatability. Gotta really look at this Bryce stuff... the chair tip is excelent. But Spike, sorry to wonder off topic, the pice you show here is beautifull... and down to 3Mb? Impressive.

This Korean site was recently mentioned here and I was astounded at the number of furniture models available for free download. The "chairs.zip" file alone has over 100 different .3DS chair models. No previews though, so 3D Explorer is a must (which, IIRC, they have also posted at the same site) 3D Artisan Definately worth a bookmark, even if you can't read a word on the site. (Apologies Spike - Table looks great!)

So Spike, when can we have it? ;) You know I adore timber furniture (unless that post got waylaid as well!) As I said before, it's a beautiful table with a near photo realistic texture. I can see my girls doing all sorts of things on that table....hey you lot, get your minds out of the gutter, I meant dinner parties ;P Cheers, Xena PS... Nance, thank you soooo much for the link! I could be downloading all night :)
