Subject: Why Keep P5 after Upgrading?

thedoctor ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 12:34 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 10:22 PM

I can think of a million reasons I was glad I kept my old Poser 4 pro-pack on my system after getting P5. However, now that I've been using P6 for two days I'm seriously considering uninstalling P5 and merely keeping the runtime folder linked to P6. Has anybody found bugs or limitations that truly warrant keeping P5 side-by-side with P6?

Only one (and it's temporary): Vue Infinite isn't compatible with P6 .pz3's yet. So, P5 is still necessary for Poser/Vue users until such time as e-on gets Vue updated for P6 import.

Oh, yeah....... And it would be a good idea for anyone that is having firefly render problems in P6 to retain their copy of P5 until the first service release (hopefully) fixes the problem. I am not having that problem, but a few others are.

I effectively stopped using P5 about 1/2 way through Beta. I'll keep it so I can support P5 users and check products for compatibility. P4 has already gone away. All that remains is a giant, rat's nest of a runtime that will take months to sort through. Nerd3D

Congrats to everybody on Beta and at CL for getting it right this time! I'm retiring P5 and will deal with my own rat's nest of runtime now. Thanks. This was a very helpful thread.

I'm not binning P5 just yet as I'm having Firefly problems with P6 [not that it was much better in P5 IMHO]. Anyway I justt got a super fast reply from CL on the problem which I've cut and pasted below: Mr. Williams, I am sorry as to the poor performance of your poser renders. At this time the engineers have identified the bug and the fix will be in the first service release of poser 6. I am sorry for the inconvenience. I hope this helps! 'I'll keep it so I can support P5 users and check products for compatibility' Nerd, What sort of compatibilty issues have you found? Since my P6 hasn't arrived yet, I can't check, but I'm sort of hoping I can retire P5 - not delete it, but shove in a corner and forget about it. I'll need it to ensure compatibilty with my products, but I'm hoping that there won't be any problems from P6 to P5, other than P6-specific functions, that is. mac

So far, every item I have tried works fine in P6, there are no compatibility issues that I know of.

you want to keep P5 as there are things in the library that didn't make it to the P6 full version...

MM, Thanks for the info. A hopeful sign. Thanks Papa, but I've never used anything from the P5 library. I only use it to check the stuff I make.

Maclean, I need to test my products to be sure they will work in P5. I've yet to personally encounter any thing for P5 that wouln't open in P6. Nerd3D

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 01 April 2005 at 6:42 PM

Nerd, That's what I do too. Basic testing in P5, then P4, then conversion to daz studio. I was just hoping I could replace P5 with P6, but I suppose I can start in P6, then double-check in P5 and P4. The less I have to use P5, the better. It's not my favorite app for workflow. LOL. mac

I'm having a lot of problems with P6..out of memory, lock ups... subsurface scattering wil not work at all. locks up some P5 light sets will not work, such as Danaes grea tradiance pro set...locks up other than that, all seems ok so far :) I'm going to square one...one figure...add a light, and play around with all the new lighting features...then go from there. Hopefully the upcoming patch will address these issues what's interesting, I had exactly the same type of trouble with P5...it took until SR3 to get it under control.

I uninstalled P5 before the P6 install last night because of my shrinking hard drive. I regret it now. I seem to be missing figures in the newest version and there are a lot of bugs in P6 that needs to be addressed. I still hve Poser 4 PP installed though and will leave it on my computer since I also have Vue 5 and worry about compatibility issues I also have some python scripts that won't work under the new Poser versions. I probably should have waited until at least the first service release pack was released before my upgrade. I rather dread these patches anyhow because I only have dail up internet connection and they have been huge in the past.

Hmmmm....

I think that the initial question is needing an addition. In my honest opinion ist should read something like

"Wy keep P5 after upgrading IF THERE STILL IS DAZSTUDIO"!?

Really, if you are looking for a proggie that does everything that P5 does, but only faster, better looking, easier to handle >> get the FREE DAZStudio and you can wait in a relaxed manner for the last bugfix of Poser6.
Chances are that you decide to work without Poser6, but anyway: DAZStudio and Vue (RIGHT, just use the "objBryce" format) are like meant for each other - until the compatibility of Poser6 & Vue is there.
:)!!

Well, I'm a big studio fan. It's my favorite app to pose in. And I hate P5 too. So, now you know where I'm coming from, I'll say this. Studio vs P5 is a pointless discussion. It's apples and oranges. Studio has some great features that poser users can only dream of - multiple undo, multiple selection of objects/materials, cameras that actually WORK, saving full MAT files, yadda, yadda, yadda. But on the other hand, P5's material room is currently unmatched by studio. And some things that are taken for granted even in poser 4, can't be done in studio (yet). You can't import a morph target. You can't copy/paste objects. These are all things that will be in the next releases. I've tested studio since the 1st aplha, and I love it. I can report a bug or request a feature, and see it fixed/implemented in the next version. Something CL might want to consider - a Bug Tracker. But I wouldn't advise anyone to throw away P5 and use studio only. Not yet. But maybe very soon. mac

@maclean: my post had been done from the view of a Vue-user. Being this, I like the way how Studio handles the files (size), I like the easy way how I can alter textures in Studio (attributes), knowing the gyro I can't say how I ever got along with the dials. There is more to Studio that makes it first choice (you've mentioned some of them - having a fast and friendly feetback is just one of them). De-installing P4 and P5 left me in no way more "poor". It resulted in gaining speed and HDD room. The post had been done not to advise anybody to do or don't anything, just a reminder.
