ok, I'm not too sure what you are after but to me the shadows are unreal in the way the light is passing through. IMO the 1st picture feels the best. I feel the elephant in the 2nd & 3rd pic would be more lit if the shadow was that bright. The shadow of the elephant's ear is disturbing in the 2nd & 3rd pic. The ring's shadow doesn't feel right but I don't exactly know why. All in all it is interesting work and fascinating to think about.
Subsurface scatter is the effect of light penetrating a translucent material and being reflected back, both picking up new color from the material, and affecting the appearance of the material, giving it a subtle 'glow' Human skin is probably the handiest example; the 'glow of health' you get in strong light.
