Subject: Poll - Who's Still using Poser 4? - content creators want to know

Spanki ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 5:55 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 4:39 AM

I'm in the process of finishing up some products and am trying to determine just how important it is to continue supporting Poser 4... Which statement below best describes you? 0. "I only own Poser 1/2/3 - I should get something newer one of these days..." 1. "I only own Poser 4" 2. "I only own Poser 5" 3. "I only own Poser 6" 4. "I own multiple versions (some combination of the above) but still use Poser 4 exclusively." 5. "I own multiple versions (some combination of the above) but I use Poser 5/6 mostly now". 6. "Poser 4? what's that? Get with the program - P6 all the way!" Thanks ;).

5 with an asterick. Although I mostly use Poser 5 (and growingly Poser 6), I still use Poser 4. As far as I can tell, Poser 4 items work nicely in Poser 5/Poser 6 so I still happily buy Poser 4 tested products.

5* *I keep P4 and PP around for plugin testing. :)

Own 4/5/6, but only use P6.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Only own 5/6...using 5 mostly still since the memory bug keeps getting me I guess. Something crashes 6 on me at least.

Gareee ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:30 PM

There was a poll over at Daz about this, and almost 90% of the responses were for D|S and Poser 5 Poser 5/6 here, BTW...

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Hello,

  1. "I own multiple versions (some combination of the above) but still use Poser 4 exclusively."

Poser 4 Pro is probably the most stable of them all (so far) and I use it for developing characters/props/cloths etc. but Poser 6 may change my mind if it ever gets totally fixed. I hardly ever user Poser 5. It should of been called Poser 6 beta.

Later...

galactron22 ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:41 PM

I brokedown and finallly started using Poser5 (I bought it a while back and never used it) but i might go packt to the Propack.

Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

genny ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:42 PM

I own P4, P4 ProPack, P5 and now P6. Up until April4th, I used P4 with ProPack only, as I really disliked P5. I was very surprised and happy when I did get P6, and that is what I will be using from now on. I have connected the libraries, or what-ever you call it, and everything that I have in my P4 library works perfectly in P6. I haven't tryed making a very large render, the one's that everyone is saying causes a "memory" problem, so I can't comment on that. I usually, Pose in Poser, and then Render in Vue. (:

  1. Still mostly use P5, slowly learning the new tricks of P6. Wouldn't know what to do without dynamic cloth, raytracing and displacement mapping.

  1. here and don't see any reason to change at the moment.

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

Crescent ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:57 PM

Short answer: PP. I own P4, PP, P5 and P6. (Heck, I might still have the P2 and P3 disks around somewhere.) For a lot of what I want to do, PP is the way to go. I mostly use Poser to simulate line art - heavy postworking in PS so neat stuff like HDRI isn't useful for me. The toon render doesn't do what I need, either. I'm going to start playing with P6 and for certain types of renders I may go that route, but at least for now, PP is still better because it's quicker to render. P4 is a dog and I wish CL had used PP as their "new" Poser Artist program. .bum files are horrible! P5 has a lot of stuff I don't use and is slower to use than PP. The P6 lighting interests me (point lights - happy dance!) but until I play with render options and look at speed issues, it won't be my primary render engine. Cheers!

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:58 PM

5 is the closest. It's more like, "I own PP, P5, and P6, but never use PP any more."

Helgard ( ) posted Thu, 14 April 2005 at 6:59 PM

Your choices didn't indicate a difference between Poser 4 and ProPack. If Poser 4 users are using Pro Pack, then we don't have to worry about .RSR and .bum files, do we? I don't own Pro Pack, but my understanding is that only Poser 4 and earlier use .bum and .RSR files. So if everyone is using Pro Pack and up, do we need to keep including .rsr files, and support for .bum in our MAT files.

you know my preferences, i guess heheh ;) i used to swear by pp, but now addicted to p6. i'm personally pondering continued support for p4 (for stand-alone stuff, depending on how poly-heavy the product is). i'm guessing that those still using p4 are the one with older computers that cannot meet the requirements for p5/p6. no reason not to support p4 unless the product requires high computer resources to use, i think. good poll, tho :)

I'll echo rockets comment...my 'puter can meet system requirements of P5 or P6 (at least I think it would...hehehe...2.4 GHz and 1GB RAM...is that enough for P6?)...I just don't need or want the complications of Poser versions newer than Pro Pack... as I said, Pro Pack is fast and does everything I really want

Note regarding Poser 4/PP support. If, as a merchant, you intend to support DAZ Studio, then, until the SDK is available, you need to support P4/PP. This will likely change once D|S is finalized, but the current clime of "wait until it's gold" is unwise in a business sense and hampers the appeal of the products. At this time, if you want to support D|S, though, you want to be sure the product works fully in P4/PP, because at the core level, that is the most basic functionality. It is inevitable, however, that there will soon be two versions of various products created, one for each of the two programs.

4 for me - I own 4/PP and 5 (Mac)

I mostly render animations and 5 is too slow compared tto 4/PP (even using 4 compatibility)
May consider P6 in the future once the initial bugs with first releases are worked out.
