Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 22 9:27 pm)
Thanks for trying, I truly apppreciate the effort. If my poor puter ever decides to work again I will let you know about it. I did manage to unzip it, and had to backdoor to open the readme file. Word wouldn't recognize it for some reason, so I renamed it as a txt file and opened it with notepad. Now the puter won't start, so I can't check to see if Poser recognized the files or not. Always something, lol.
Mac files differ from PC files mainly because they have a 512 byte (if I recall) header added at the front of the file, that tells the Mac what kind of file it is, and what program runs it, stuff like that. There should be PC utilities (not Poser ones, general ones) if you look around for stripping these off. Mac Converter works fine, but only on a Mac, as noted. There is also a difference in how carrage returns are added to text files, too.
We have full backwards compatibility, but the "preferred" method is to use the standard files with the correct extensions. It's completely up to the Application how it reads in the files. The same goes for EOL markers, OSX will read the standard, Mac, Unix or Windows formats, if the App makes use of the correct calls. There is a LOT of confusion in this area with Content for Poser, and I still haven't found an OSX answer. Are the 2 versions of Poser now File compatible? I don't know about others but I'm not buying content because I don't know which version to buy. If I buy the Mac version, it's OS9 and a real pain to convert to OSX, if it's Win and they use an .exe "Installer" then the installer won't run, even if the files are compatible. Sadly the Mac Compatibility FAQ over at the Mac Forum is still OS9 centric and promotes products that aren't available on OSX.
kaveman: I have no problems with content for P5 and P6 as long as I stay away from exe's. If the items are truly made for P5-P6 they are identical for Windows and Mac, no conversion neccessary. If you come across something with rsr's instead of png's for the thumbnails, Maconverter will convert it running in Classic mode. Also there is a utility by fmorgan that will make png's out of rsr's. There is one simple version in freestuff and one in the marketplace here. Python is a problem though: scripts that use Tkinter won't work on the mac, like the Real Skin Shader by face_off. Content for Poser 4 Mac works in Mac P5-P6 also, Poser makes the png-file for the thumbnail.

Is there such a thing for Poser files?
