THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: And a Million Brycers cheered!

xenic101 ( ) posted Wed, 27 April 2005 at 9:12 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:40 PM

Over in some other Bryce forum the idea of a Bryce only challenge was floated in a thread.

Kemal posted the clock he recently modeled and has posted pictures of here. Brycetech said he'd like to see that clock modeled using Bryce.
Rochr said, 'ok' and posted a picture of the clock modeled in Bryce. When asked, Rochr also posted the wireframe.
Just proof of what can be done if you have tentacles.
I mean proof of what can be done if you really know what you are doing.

I don't see DAZ as saving bryce.... Sure, they're slowing down Bryce's fall, but we're far from making any steps towards catching up with the rest of the 3D market. Have we all forgotten the things Doc Mojo wanted to do with bryce? Look at where DAZ is getting at at the moment. I would bet on the fact that Doc Mojo could do way better then this.

Doc would have had to do the same thing DAZ did, and that's fix the code. And, we knew fixing that would be a pain, and it turned out to be a royal pain (so it took longer). Which didn't win any favors with us impatient Brycers. Ah, what can you do? Time will tell. I used to think I would never need Bryce 5, now I never touch Bryce 4 (almost never) AS

Doc would have the mathematically correct procedural engine from mojoworld merged into bryce by now... The current bryce procedural engine makes no mathematical sense whatsoever in some places (doc said so himself) and the mojoworld engine is generations ahead of the one in bryce.

He could probably have merged the hybrid renderer from mojoworld too, allowing for non-raytraced rendering on parts where the raytracing isn't neccesary anyways. Which I imagine would significantly help increase the renderspeed. (I have yet to see daz bryce 5.5 make any diff on big scenes, the leaked rendertimes made little impression on me when it came to bigger more complex scenes)

Infinite terrains would be a nice feature for a landscape program too. And since all the competition has it or is working at it, it would seem a very logical step to make. And doc's quite specialized at this technology last time I checked.

Considering the time DAZ has spent developing Bryce 5.5 I think Doc could've applied at least one of these three features if he'd have had his hands on Bryce.
Now I'm sorry for all the NVIATWAS fans, but I consider any one of these three things significantly more important then a daz studio plugin.

"Doc would have the mathematically correct procedural engine from mojoworld merged into bryce by now" -Maybe/probably not, Doc wanted to take MojoWorld and slide it into the Bryce GUI. (his words, siggraph `04) "I have yet to see daz bryce 5.5 make any diff on big scenes" -Well, you have yet to see Bryce 5.5 at all. And, I actually saw no difference in render times with size of scenes, but with types of scenes. (simple, volumetric, glass scenes, etc) *Come back with your arguements when Bryce 6 comes out. To complain about all the things you wanted in Bryce 5.5, when you KNEW those things weren't going to be put into it, because DAZ announced 7 months ago what WAS going to be in Bryce 5.5, is kinda going nowhere, imho. Well, he won't be doing that now. I'm surprised though, I always thought MojoWorld's gui was very unique. But, on a flip side...I feel ya Ray, I want Bryce to be neck and neck with Vue Infinite, lol. But, that does shows how far a "simple" landscaping program can go. And, how cool Bryce could be. I wish it was all here yesterday too. AS

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 28 April 2005 at 9:05 AM

Truth is, daz is going too slow. Bryce doesn't need to be vue infinite right away, but after 7 months they should have come up with more. Okay, it was known 7 months ago that they wouldn't come up with more, but they still should have. It isn't even average progress, let alone "catching up". No matter how DAZ puts it, I consider this a shame. What DAZ is doing though is profiling itself as the big saviour of Bryce, acting like "omg check the amazing stuff we've changed!", which, compared to the actual progress, is rather misleading. I mean, the box graphics were a milestone?? Could be that this is just american business culture or something, but for me, it doesn't work.

One comparison of programs has been left out of this entire discussion and that is "price". Bryce is still a relatively inexpensive program that can do similar images to other costlier programs. It is simple to learn, you can make decent images quickly; it has a huge following for that reason and probably won't go away because of it either. Just my take on why Bryce continues to breath....and why I use it :)

Swade ( ) posted Thu, 28 April 2005 at 12:36 PM

I would like to add.... Now that DAZ has had a chance to clean up the code... they should be better able to advance Bryce toward what we all want it to be.

There are 10 kinds of people: Those who know binary, and those who don't.

A whiner is about as useful as a one-legged man at an arse kicking contest.

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 28 April 2005 at 2:15 PM

hmmm... I can't imagine being the only bryce user who's beginning to move away from bryce. I see the price issue though :) but on the other hand, who would pay 99 bucks for a new computergame if it's almost a clone of the pervious version? 'cause that's kinda the price level bryce 5 went out for.. computergame pricerange. granted, 99 bucks is still a great price for a nice little 3d toy, but if I saw bryce 5 for $50 and bryce 5.5 for $99 I'd pick version 5 :) Swade, for the sake of bryce, I really hope you're right :)

Oh, sure a lot of Bryce users will in time use other programs. But, that's just part of the story, and literally millions have used it. There shouldn't really be an argument to whether or not Bryce is the only program you use, but does one still enjoy using their Bryce. (imho) "Truth is, daz is going too slow" Lol, I feel ya man. All I can say is that I had seen how the optimizing of the code was complex, and de-bugging it all was a tedious process, done very well by the beta team, they did great work. We all know its taken longer than wanted, but I was happy waiting through these past odd months, versus languishing in the years when it was being updated at all. "What DAZ is doing though is profiling itself as the big saviour of Bryce, acting like "omg check the amazing stuff we've changed!" Oh, come on man lol, DAZ is a company selling a product. I think that says it all. (but, honestly face to face, they are also extremely nice people) AS

Yeah, but there is a thing called "over-advertizing" where you make your product sound better then it is, and people will buy it expecting a lot and getting very little. It might work for initial sales, but it's not very customer friendly and rather misleading.

I've decided that in comparison to the price/feature balance of bryce 5, this new version if kind of an overpriced sqeeky toy... That's the impression it currently makes on me anyways. And I notice that bryce just isn't going anywhere near where I want my 3D journey to go, which does reduce the enjoyment of using the software significantly.

Ive personally started to do a lot of modeling in Cinema lately. But i gotta tell you, when it comes to pushing polys, not much can compare to Bryce. Just recently i tried to put together a fairly detailed scene in Cinema, and its crawling on its knees. In Bryce, i can put in 10 times as much objects without problems. Not bad for such a cheap program. :)

Bryce is a great begginning for many, and as Rochr states, many users still continue to use it in addtion to their new tools. These programs are just tools for the artist, find ALL the tools that will take you where you need/want to go. And, like I have said before, Bryce 5.5 might not be needed by every user all at once. Wait, and watch and sniff it out, that's what I did with Bryce 5, it was 6 months + before I upgraded to it. And, some users will be perfectly happy with further learning/experimenting with their B5 and just wait for B6. Yeah, something about Bryce's objects (terrains, primitives) seem to just be "optimized" for use in Bryce, I can build WAY more complex stuff in Bryce, without it crawling to a slow death. (compared to other programs) AS

As I said in a couple of other threads, I will probably buy it myself. It is still a very valid tool for me even if I do most of my work in Cinema now. @Rochr, dang it, you done gone and got me curious as to what you are considering in your scene to make it crawl on it's knees - if I remember your 'puter is pretty analogous to mine. If you want, drop me a line and maybe we can compare notes (bit OT for here perhaps).

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!
