Subject: POSER 5 DOES NOT LIKE TIGER

originalplaid ( ) posted Fri, 29 April 2005 at 10:49 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 11:44 PM

10.4 on the Mac breaks Poser 5. The dialogue boxs jump closed as soon as they appear on my machine. BUT the program seems much much more responsive if it did work :) Like you can actually move the windows around etc without bogging down the machine. Fun stuff. Time to break out the IBM again I guess.

I'm now glad that I didn't immediately jump into the Tiger upgrade. As a Cinema4D plugin developer (MacOS and Windows) writing a plugin to bring in Poser scenes and content, not having Poser able to run is a show stopper. And if Cinema or CodeWarrior had issues, my users and potential customers would not be amused. As is often said, never upgrade when in the middle of a project.

Exciting, isn't it. Nowhere does it say that Poser6 for OSX 3, would run with all new versions of every new OS. Tiger is NOT a service update. Please, give CL time to release their OSX 4 compatible version. This is not unexpected as Apple has widely stated that they are working with the GPU suppliers to ensure tight integration between OSX and their chips. This is taking OS graphics to the next level. Software that still relies on large amounts of very old legacy code will break, sooner or later. Look for a Poser 6, Tiger update coming soon(er or later). PS see the earlier thread and the Mac Forum and threads on other sites for more info, this is the hottest news around:-)

That was my gripe in another thread. Although it is not ensured that older software operate in a new OS, I've had little difficulties in the Windows world with this issue. I've run software written for Windows 3.1 under Windows XP Pro! The main thing that breaks here is games. That a dot upgrade (10.3 -> 10.4 remember) breaks even professional software (Photoshop) is horrifying. I do realize that this is adding 64-bit support, but since my Apple computer is a G4 eMac, I'll patiently wait until I'm done programming and/or stability is resumed. I cannot put enthusiasm before efficacy - if I cannot complete my plugins, I cannot support my business.

I'm sorry, but you don't seem to understand the Mac OSX numbering system. This release is not a dot upgrade at all. This is a completely NEW version, the same sort of step as between Windows 3.1 to 95, (although nothing like either.) To give you the example of OSX 3 code named Panther, has had 9 dot updates and several minor updates, These are number 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.1 to the current 3.9.1. OSX 4 code named Tiger, leaves this old code path and begins again with OSX 4.0. Do some research before making silly comments like this. Which version of Photoshop is broken, are you talking about Photoshop CS2 for OSX Tiger? No? As I have pointed out there have been major changes to OSX GPU drivers, to gain these advantages older software needs to be updated. Can't you understand this? I'm not suggesting that anyone rushes out and purchases this new Operating System until the Applications they depend on have also been updated by their developers to the correct versions. To do anything less would be very silly.

I am certainly no programmer but from what ive read it seems indeed that Mac OSX may have finally left those apps relying on old OS9legacy code, in the ash bin of history. it had to happen eventually :-) My advice is to wait it out to see which third party app makers will finally UPGRADE thier bascode

"Which version of Photoshop is broken, are you talking about Photoshop CS2 for OSX Tiger?" CS2 has lost the drag and drop ability

We have learned, since the early days of Cheetah and Puma, that each new OS release is major bugware, so it's very unwise to replace a stable installation with a new OS. Always put the latest Mac bugware on a secondary disk or partition, and then wait a few months for the code monkeys to issue the dozens of patches needed to bring it up to speed. You might think that, if Jobs had waited as long as Bill has stalled Longhorn, there wouldn't be these problems. Unfortunately, in the modern world of unaccountable offshore programmers, what was once a speedy and orderly process, has now degenerated into a monstrous and impenetrable maze of conflicts to resolve with each new OS release. So the same problems will always occur, whether they dump a premature relase on the unsuspecting public, or whether they delay 3 or 4 years, through indecision over which features to copy from competing systems.

"You might think that, if Jobs had waited as long as Bill has stalled Longhorn, there wouldn't be these problems." I suspect that there still would be problems with poser and likely Bryce3D. in all fairness I cant comment on the Photoshop CS issue with Tiger. But from what ive learned about how much of poser is still OS8/9 code running a "carbonized compatibility layer", it does not surpise me that poser5/6 is having problems with tiger if Apple has chosen to no longer support some of that older code. it sucks for poser users but this could well be a case of CL needing to "uppatch" poser Not apple needing to "backpatch" Tiger to run old programs.

Poser is running on the same Carbon framework ("carbonized compatibility layer" if you like) as Cinema4D, Finder, iTunes or Office - I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Not every piece of software suddenly quit working... for example Vue seems to work and most my music programs work... seems only programs I paid more then 200 for don't work :) I could see Pro Tools breaking since it involves Core Audio, but for Poser to quit working because of a window bug is semi-annoying. If Curious Labs doesn't patch Poser 5 for OSX 10.4 then they are going to be on my bad list forever because there just isn't enough reason to upgrade to Poser 6 in my opinon.
