Dunno if it's me or what but I've noticed a serious lack of comments on the monthly challenge entries! Since I had to go through MANY pages of the forum in the past 3 days in order to catch up, I've noticed that some entries don't even have any comments at all other than Cyn or Doug to let them know that their entry has been added! What's the point if people don't give feedback on the entries? Or did u all go on holidays lately guys? O_o Just wondering..... ;)

vlaaitje ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 8:38 AM

I am just starting to look more often here in the forum, I see also that they have not that much interest. But for me is just because the language....I wish I could better write my English, but I try, and that count's too Ilona

For me - I think there are just too many 'challenges' now, to go through them all would be a full time job. So it is either view the gallery of challenge entries that has grown in the forum or view the normal gallery, there is not time to enter and comment on all.

Yea! There's a lot of entries indeed, I have to agree with that! Maybe 5 entries per person is too much?

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 10:29 AM

Well we're throwing out all the easy choices for next month to pick from... We thought reflections/refractions would be more of a challenge but guess not... think we're up to 70 or so entries right now... whew! It's great we have such participation but we've wondered how many really go & look at the challenge page...

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 11:18 AM

Well if I may be honest, I haven't looked at them. Certainly a lot of participation, which is great for the forum. Must be doing something right! But it's become very difficult (for me at least) to find substantial threads of interest trying to wade through all the challenge posts, scavenger hunts, etc.... Puts a damper on my participation. shrug I'm sure at least a few of them are worthwhile, but for me the interest is just not there... sorry guys guilty look

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 11:21 AM

actually i think it's the choice... we had a lot more discussion with social issues & night but this is... what can you say? yeah, nice reflection :/

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 11:27 AM

we discussed once having members load directly to the challenge page but then that would cut out any discussion whatsoever plus "out-ofsight, out-of-mind", doubt anyone would look then glad to see you back 'chelle & errr donald over there (got him tied down atm) & misha & & &... but we're missing some of the techies... you know that was my concern when i signed up for this, the technical aspect, not all fun & games... at least i can go back i drag the archives for an answer

Tedz ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 11:56 AM

My 2 Cents worth...and not wanting to upset....but...I believe...some of these Challenges....are just not Challenging at all...reminding Me of the "No Post work Challenge"...which was a Flood of Snapshots. Also...when this Reflective Challenge was Announced...there was a Flood of Images...not shot with the Challenge in mind...just Posted because...imho...the Entrants had some Reflective Shots in Store. Also there is a lot going on in the Forum....it has become a 2nd Gallery to Post Images before they go into a Gallery..."Should I Post this one...or that one?" However...getting back to Pascales "lack of Comments" on the Challenge...I am bold enough to suggest...that many who enter the Challenge....do so in a "Hit & Run" Fashion...they "Post" their Challenge...and have very little Contribution on any one else...or the Forum in General. This is just a Point of View....and is not designed to discredit anyone :]

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 12:05 PM

yep, yep... all valid points... so any suggestions on how to remedy it? my mind is a bit scrabbled atm (most of the moment) to know how to fix it... just wait out the month i guess & make next month's choices a REAL challenge! almost nothing that we've seen before in the gallery done... yeah! that's the ticket... evil grin just you wait, we'll make you think!

azy ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 12:06 PM

Well Tedz and Michelle said it all for me

Eggiwegs! I would like... to smash them!

DJB ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 12:42 PM

We have been toying with the idea.I have said to cynlee a few times, I just wonder how many actually check out the challenge page and wade throught the images. I say the challlenge should be harder, and lets make the upload 2 per member. I have done Net Mechanic checks on the load times of the page and with so many on one page I am sure 56k has a hard time anyway. I would love to have more technical references in here. Lets all work on ideas to make this forum something for everyone. Put your ideas in about what you would like to see. I kind of like having people put in work in progress and giving feedback on how to gain better results.

One think THAT really IRKS me to no END is the way the RENDER forums are setup...the word "ARCHAIC" certainly comes to mind! Many good threads end up getting lost and most people (myself included) just don't have the time to go trudging thru all the stuff! I try to comment and participate as much as I can! The scavenger hunt (I thought) was a way to push ourselves a bit (and have some fun too) But maybe it WAS too much! The forum isn't really designed for this kinda thing and maybe did get "overwhelmed" with multiple threads! Without the links Doug provided, I don't think the Hunt would have had as much participation as it did! I feel the monthly challenges ARE a good thing, but the subject matter is sometimes very broad and can be interpreted in MANY ways! The guidelines are pretty loose and I don't think the MODS want to start POLICING submissions!?!? I think its more about participation in the long run and up to the individual to challenge themselves if the REALLY want to learn!

Maybe to alleviate some of the TRAFFIC here! We should start using the GALLERY for our challege posts! There is a selection on the "By Genre" drop down menu when you upload entitled "CHALLENGE" This would eliminate duplicate posts and we could then use this a filter to SEE all the entries! It would also be cool if you could EMBED multiple pix in a MESSAGE! I've tried this using HTML tags and it doesn't seem to work!

Okay I'm done!

L8r!

as suggested to me, maybe we can still take challenge ideas but let us pick which one will be done... we had little participation on the vote last month but maybe that was because it was posted on a weekend... I'd really like to see something that we don't see much of in the gallery that we can all at least try

TomDart ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 1:36 PM

Ok, a comment from me, who sometimes puts in too many entries(some pretty good some really belonging in the delete file). Other times I put up almost nothing. Why? It has to do with the subject at hand, as well does discussion. Post #8 by Cyn hits the discussion part on the nail, IMHO. I like the idea of limits, perhaps 3 would do per entrant. The idea of more "challenging" subjects is difficult since each artists and snapshooter has personal viewpoints. These various viewpoints are what make it more interesting to me. I check the challenge page likely once a week. I check the "what's new" in photography all genre every day and look at a couple of pages. Peace to all. (Pascale! You got comments here! : ) TomDart

Dito Michelle.... I'm not a favorite's collector...have few time to look at each picture...not only in the photography section... and the forum for me is here for sharing....more links..than stuff... Feel very sorry...But I love you...

tvernuccio ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 2:03 PM

i noticed the same thing Pascale. i enjoy particpating in the forum. i enjoy the threads and seeing all the pictures. i like learning. i try to comment on everything, and post a comment. but i've gotten the impression that when an image is put in here as a challenge entry that we're NOT supposed to critique it or give suggestions. maybe i've misunderstood that. dunno. so if i see an image presented for the challenge and it has some pretty reflections on it, well...dunno what else to say really...except "nice reflections." for me, when i put up an entry for the challenge, what's the point if i don't get constructive criticism? that's WHY i'm here!!!! i've only made one entry so far. i REALLY want to challenge myself. the one i entered...it was a hard one. may not have looked like it but i had some difficult shooting conditions. Speaking of challenges, Scavenger Hunt has been a FANTASTIC way for me to learn, have fun AND CHallenge myself!! thanks, Joe, for that!!! I have been challenging myself to capture "wind"...one of the HUNT items. i have worked soooooo hard at taking pictures of flags, trying to show wind and trying to really make a nice presentation. i'll show some later. the one i entered for the HUNT...not so good...only tattered flag i could find. sorry i'm rambling, but HERE'S THE POINT. We can all take from this forum what we will. We can have fun AND challenge ourselves. oh, one other thing i wanted to say. THANKS guys for ALL the help, suggestions, and feedback you give me here. It really does help me a lot! It may take me a long time, but slowly, i'm getting there!!!!! Oh...for me...5 entries is a LOT. I hardly slept last month...pushing, pushing myself with those nightshots. you guys have no idea. i was literally falling asleep while taking pics!!!!! i was shooting until i couldn't hold my eyes open any more!!!

DJB ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 3:33 PM

L8RDAZE...that could be a good idea to move the challenge over to the Challenge forum. Least it cuts down on how fast the skip off to page 2,3...in this forum. Would tie it all into one place, which is good for us to manage it.

"The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions."

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 3:36 PM

WOW!! Didn't think this 'lil remark would generate so many answers!!! I agree with everyone here really! I think that reducing the amount of pics for the challenge to 2 a month, like Doug suggested, would be perfect, this way, people would post only their best stuff and would make a real effort for the shot!? Maybe? Scavenger Hunt is a brilliant thing and I wouldn't change that! Especially since there's no limit of time on this! I think it's a fantastic source of ideas for shots! And Teddy, I think u nailed it, people come in here, upload their pic and go away!! I've noticed this too and it's kind of annoying! And yes, more technical stuff would be fabulous!! That's also one of the reason why I'm here, like Sheila, cos I want to learn!! And yes Cyn, I think this month challenge might not be a great subject for discussion indeed! LOL! Oh well!

cynlee ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 3:48 PM

challenge forum? i think he meant the photo gallery genre, (challenge)... but would still have to note it in the forum & discuss... think they want us moving over there? unsure :/ another forum to keep up with a limit of 3 sounds good to me, although 2 would be easier to keep track of... "social issues" was the only challenge i did all 5 in do you still want to "vote" on the challenge idea? promise to make the choices more difficult... (i.e. the alphabet idea or the song titles, pick the title then do the image, not vise-a-versa :P would have to go back & look what others...) but you know what i mean

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 4:46 PM

Yeah... I meant the Photo Gallery and use the CHALLENGE genre to post images! I did a quick "looks see" and used this as a filter. Not sure if this would actually WORK "as is" b-cause there are members using this genre already and some DON'T seem to be related to our current challenge! Probably would need a more SPECIFIC genre created like MONTHLY challenge or even use the MONTH (not sure what THIS entails on the backend of Render though!) I think cutting down the # of entries per person to 2 or 3 is a good idea too! For critiques and stuff...we need some real guidelines to follow and set expectations. Maybe some statement on the TOP BANNER...that says something to the effect of "If you want CANDID feedback on any of your images, please visit the Photo Forum" On some other forums I frequent, they setup a rule and you simply use (*) in the subject field to notify others if you TRULY WANT this kind of CANDID feedback/critiques! Ya know WHAT? Thats EXACTLY what you get too! You LEARN and IMPROVE because of it! Joe

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2005 at 8:56 PM

Cyn: "do you still want to "vote" on the challenge idea?". Mmmmmh! I dunno to be honest! I don't mind either way! ;)

tvernuccio ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 1:17 AM

Joe, that's a great idea to use a system where we let people know if we want candid feedback/critiques! I'd still like us to vote on the challenge topic every month. i like the idea that we all can come up with different ideas as a group and vote as a group. but i go with the flow...so whatever ya'all decide to do...:)

firestorm ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 1:52 AM · edited Sun, 15 May 2005 at 1:57 AM

what onslow and michelle said covers what i feel.i also feel that the challenge should stay in the forum....moving it away will not generate the discussion here.

was also wondering if would be possible to have specific threads for example "may challenge discussion thread" for those seeking ways on improving their entries and "may challenge submission thread" for those just wishing to enter. i guess the threads will have to be managed in some way to controll the length of them...just an idea the edit part: also, mybe we should not vote for the challenge but let it be set for us...a little more of a challenge when you don't have a preconcieved idea.

All these little things in life
They all create this haze
Too many things to get done
And I'm running out of days.... "Out Of Days" By: 3 Doors Down- Away From The Sun

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

I really like the idea of quality vs. quantity. If the monthly challenge were reduced to 2 or 3 entries I suspect the entries would roll in towards the end of the month and be carefully chosen prior to post. It saddens me to see a fantastic photographer posting 3 or more (just ok)photos daily in the gallery just to be posting something. I would rather see their one incredible shot from the week. Back to the forum, is there any way the threads could be categorized? For instance, questions and answers for one, what changes would you do to my picture/tell me/show me, for another and then the more personal conversations someplace else?

Pascale, you are so kind to show such encouragement to the others on this site and, from the bottom of my heart, I deeply appreciate the advice, comments and encouragement I have received from you and others on this site.

Now, I'm off to go look at photos and maybe drop a line or two,
Jackie

Good point(s). I am guilty of this lack of comment Tibet2004UK. Please accept my appologies. I was thinking before you posted this that nine entries would be cool, but now I am thinking more like three. -Jeff (coolj001) :-)

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 7:51 AM

I too love the idea of the option for the comments! But I think it has already been suggested in another thread a few weeks ago! To let people know if u want critic/advice or not. This way, no worries about offending people if u give advice they didn't request! My dear Jackie, I always try to comment as much as I can and encourage people too cos I know how it's like to work on something, being proud of ur achievement (even if it sucks!), post it, and wait for comments that never come! It's so discouraging. When I started posting on Renderosity, over 2 years ago now, I was so proud when I got my first comment and that's what gave me the confidence to keep going! Jeff, ur punishment will be 3 weeks of hard labour, commenting on every single post in the forum!! ;P

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 8:13 AM

Some great ideas, BUT the one fact remains the the very setup nature of this FORUM sorta defeats discussion on a detailed level! Look how fast threads get BUMPED DOWN 2 or 3 pages back! If ya don't have your ebots setup to tell ya when someone has responded, you might never know someone has left any comments to that thread! (You would actually have to reply to a thread to even get an ebot!) We get alot of new "faces" here asking some of the SAME questions over & over! Why? Because this IS where your supposed to come TO LEARN! There's no way to create "STICKY" type posts that are easily referenced! We have an ARCHIVE of posts from YEARS ago, which holds a WEALTH of info, but you need to SEARCH thru all of it to get to that info, which not many are willing to do) For ME, I've being coming here for so long that I'm USED to IT! (YES it annoys me!) But... It's the people here that MAKE it WORTH WILD for me! I can put up with all the (forums) limitations and have LEARNED to work around them! That's all folks (For NOW!) Joe

firestorm ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 8:27 AM

yeah, stickys would be great but like you've said the forum is not set up that way. i've used the search option and it gets me the info from time to time if i can remember something from the thread title but usually advice is buried 2 or 3 post down from something titled "advice needed"

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 8:41 AM

It's nearly impossible to find that wealth of info using the search function. You have to remember who posted it, or be able to word your query with the right words to even have it come up..... and then wade through all the non-relevant ones... if you're lucky you may find it. I agree Joe, you get used to it, but it doesn't make life easy. The issue of discussion on challenge images has always been a problem..... when it was run from the contest area, people would usually post a few variations of what they were working on here, and then upload their 1 best image to the Photo Challenge.... these images were then voted on and a Winner chosen. Very few participated because they were intimidated by the winner-loser aspect of it.... Indeed it took me a long time to work up the nerve to try and compete with the big boys of the forum, who disappeared long ago, unfortunately. But the point being there was a very clear line as to what an image was supposed to entail.... When I took over the thought to move it here, was an effort to take away the competitiveness and foster learning. The other thing is I was getting tired of people getting pissed at me, because their images weren't being allowed into the challenge. If it didn't fit the challenge I rejected it. Much like the mod before me did. You'd be surprised how many people will enter an image without reading what it's supposed be about. We wanted more participation, and it seemed to have worked, but the fact was that people still did not discuss (in any worthwhile sense) over the images being submitted. Misha and I were never able to come up with a suitable way to guide a discussion. And it seems most feel they are either unable or not qualified to critique the images being submitted. Either for fear of making someone upset or fear in the lack of their own abilities. I'm in agreeance with Tedz thoughts..... hit and run submissions.... I have not recognized many of the names submitting..... not that it really matters, but uhhh whatever. Much of what I've been seeing in some of these challenges, fails to impress. Yes, the no postwork one comes to mind.... The whole point of that one was to try your best in camera image.... I think most failed to get what it was about. Change the number to one-two images tops. It gets people thinking quality over quantity, and it takes some of the workload off your shoulders.... lowers the ratio of challenge to other posts.... Or just go back to the old way..... back to the contest area, with people posting images here prior to deciding on a final entry.... believe me I had considered doing this during my reign when things just got to be too much to handle.

I am, therefore I create.......

I think this would be a brilliant thing actually!! I wasn't around when things were done this way but it sounds fantastic to me!!! It would be really challenging, which is the point, and it's definitely a great way to learn!!!! I'll vote for that solution, if there was a voting option on this! wink

firestorm ( ) posted Sun, 15 May 2005 at 10:15 AM

i agree that reducing the no of entries will make them choose between their entries. also, what if the rules were changed so that you make three submissions through the month and at the end you then nominate one. this could lead to more photographically based discussions.
