Don't people dare to give a bad rating/comment/critique along with an explaination, why? I hate to say it, but you aren't wrong. It's a very common observation around here. It's also a common observation that several who have given less than "excellent" or who try to give constructive criticism are considered trolls, even though they are trying to be helpful. As many times as this topic has come up, it doesn't seem to change. So I guess we've grown used to it.
Many people are vocally all in favor of gallery 'constructive criticism'.
Until such time as someone says something negative about their work.
The concept of constructive criticism is a wonderful thing......so long as it gets applied to someone else.
"Many people are vocally all in favor of gallery 'constructive criticism'. Until such time as someone says something negative about their work. The concept of constructive criticism is a wonderful thing......so long as it gets applied to someone else." Not true. I'm all in favour of it, particularly for my own work. Sometimes it's hard to see the wood for the trees and therefore I rely on others to give an account of the rights and wrongs of my work. I have never once solicited praise, nor would I ever ask for any comment to be edited or deleted from my pictures, no matter what. It's a public gallery, right? So, have at it.

But for satire to be truly effective, there needs to be a grain of truth to it.
Alas, Canis_Lupus, you're right. That's why I decided to disable ranking on my posts, they're meaningless.

Yeah, this is a common complaint. For my part, if you have something to say about my image, positive or negative, have at it. The only time I would ask for a comment to be either edited or removed is if it is useless flaming, obviously put there simply because someone was mad at me for some reason. I have never had this happen to me and do not anticipate it happening. I think that the ranking system is too subjective, perhaps it should be reserved only for contests? I let people rank every single one of my images. I have had two so far (out of 31 or so, I'm fairly new here too) that people have actually given below a "Great" ranking. Xenophonz, could be. It's not me, though--if you give me a suggestion on one of my images, odds are I'll IM you and thank you for it, offer ideas on the suggestion. So far I've only reposted one image, though, through following the advice of LordStormDragon. I generally tend to avoid giving comments under "Great". It's all so subjective anyway, one person's "Excellent" is another person's "Hmmm..." This way I avoid trouble and, more importantly, I avoid discouraging newer artists and/or members of Renderosity. If I can't honestly give "Great", then I don't rank at all. Therefore it is meaningless as far as I'm concerned. =)

lol but it does happen occassionally, here's my only image to suffer a truly low ranking. But it's my absolute worst one, I think--I should never have posted it in the first place. =)Canis, You may receive the comments and suggestions you're seeking more often, if you say "Constructive critique encourage" or "Please help me improve this" or something like that in the text. People can and do give suggestions, help and critique here, but unfortunately we tend to be overwhelmed by the people who only give praise.

I think some people place way too much emphasis on the "ranking" system. After all, wether you get a "excellent" or a "ugly as hell" or a nicey nice comment, or a take this image and shove it comment, what it all boils down too is that persons own interpretation and feelings about your work as an artist. And well we all know, what is one persons toilet, can be the next persons masterpiece.

Hrrmmm... I've found some decent nebula photos on Lycos. Haven't checked Google Images. Also perhaps increasing contrast, sometimes brightness, and smoothing the whole thing over in a paint program. Especially for explosions, lots of contrast looks really dramatic to me for some reason. And Karen, I ask for comments and critiques and still don't get them often. Either I'm doing something right or something VERY wrong, lol! If I really want critique I usually have to go to the forums.
Try making a render of a girl naked but not showing the genitals (Boobs - Vagina) then they will hit you with tomatoes. :) Nah usuakky if people don't like your image they just pass without saying anything. There are also some people who like the render - Image but see something wrong andthey kindly put their 2 cents, but as I said, 90% of the people who don't like, just pass without saying anything.
Actually I got one of those in the gallery for giggle Umutov... NVIATWAS, but the posing and the way the hair fell made for some nice effects in the picture itself... No postwork. 90% of the members at any site will just come in, do what they have to do and leave. Though I think 90% is rather conservative. Closer to 99%, IMHO.
Nah, waste of good tomatoes. Those could be used to feed some starving child in a third-world country somewhere, you know. =) You are right umutov in that most people that don't like it just leave. But also a lot of people who do like it just leave too because they have nothing to say (at least, I hope that no 150 people who say my latest image but didn't comment hated it =0). I do this a lot if I have nothing really to say (I HATE giving straight "excellent, well done" comments). Pass a tomato, please! =)

Hi there, I am new to Renderosity and maybe this topic has been discussed before but I didnt find any similar threads here. However if that is so, I am sorry. So, when I registered and uploaded my first pictures I wondered about the extremely (!) good feedback. Well, I looked around in the Gallery and the only ranking that I saw was "Excellent" or no rating, no matter how good (or bad!) the pics are. Just "Excellent". In my opinion this is not the idea of a ranking system. Don't people dare to give a bad rating/comment/critique along with an explaination, why? Is it really better not to give a comment or a rating to less impressive works? I'm sure its not. I mean, what value does a good ranking have, when its the only one that is given? I can't understand that. I don't want to be ashamed for giving some real critique (not just "ohh great!" or "good work!", I mean REAL critique including improvement suggestions!) and/or a worse rating than "Great" (did that ever happen here at all?). Otherwise this community is worth a... I dont know what your motives are, but I post my images here to receive suggestions how I can do it better and not be admired as a pop star. Well, this is my impression of Renderosity and I really hope that I am wrong... somehow. Faithfully, Canis Lupus ps: please excuse my english, I am german.
