...and he thought Poser was simplistic? 'course, the folks at Christie's Auction House prolly needs a refresher on what art is more than yesterday's erstwhile troll does... a piece of paper with a scribble on it for $20K USD? a small white cube w/ a dab of feces on top sells for over 50 grand? Yeesh. /P

"small white cube w/ a dab of feces on top sells for over 50 grand? Yeesh."

LOL. I think we're trying too hard with Poser, when all we really need to do is sell our crap on a box for $50k. Then we'll be true artists.

We 3D folks got it all wrong it seems. ;-) Message edited on: 05/20/2005 14:58

Yes this style of art started to come to the fore shortly after Warhole exhibited his Campbell soup painting. It developed into a state whereby it was not so much the art that was important but the ability to expound upon it and justify its worth. Those artists blessed with a fluent tongue found that public recognition was just a catch phrase away. Provided that you could spin a sufficiently engaging tale of why a pile of old tyres needed to be placed in front of the National Gallery there were apparently sufficient art foundations only to willing to throw money your way. As with the way of these things like minded artist started to form groups to discuss how they could further the genre. Seeking a name they decided after much debate to be called the Confederation of Natural Artists. What indeed could be more natural than everyday objects being placed in galleries for public display and, more importantly public discussion.

All was well until an art critic finding himself short of note paper abbreviated the confederations name to simply .....

CoN Artists :)

"wow...some people will buy anything..." Yeah, that's the weird part. Any freak can do something strange and call it art. And even the big auction houses are in it for the money and so maybe will sell anything. But, yeah, what would motivate someone to buy it. Is there some sort of tax write off we don't know about?

Check out the film 'The Moderns'. It has a definition of art that seems to be universal. "Whatever you can get away with" BTW the 0.5mm of the artists faeces on a pedestal did not sell!

"Yesterday's erstwhile troll" would only consider this to be art if the artist had grown his own food, then ate it, then produced this fabulous work. I cant believe I lost so much money setting paper bags of it on fire on peoples doorsteps.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 20 May 2005 at 3:39 PM

Hi Steve :) Pengy, for some reason there have been a lot of trolls lately harping on various topics. It's best just to avoid them in order not to be baited :) Interestingly, in the past I've found some people responding more to some of my stick figure art over some of my drawings or 3D work. Granted though, the stick figure art was much more obscene :P

The original 'dada' art form was meant to be an extension of the then de rigeur existentialist philosophy.

An umbrella stuffed into a garbage can -- or a bicycle wheel attached to a wooden stool -- were meant to be visual depictions of the utter randomness and absurdity of existence.

In my idle moments, I've occasionally pondered the question of how many different ways one can illustrate absurdity.......and perhaps even make a lot of money by doing it.

The problem with the forums is that no one will pay for it.

There is always the elephant that paints, similiar to the monkey depicted above. The elephants paintings were going for between 10k-20k USD. There some painting in gallery that has a blue background with a screw in the middle of it. Go figure....

If the artist with poo on a podium, took Imodium, would that be an Artist's Block? Emily

I think you're all giving too much attention to someone who missed his or her Ritalin yesterday. Art is totally indefinable. Don't believe me?Step up and try to define it and I'll find you 40,000 people to contradict you.

I wouldn't knock monkey art. Have you ever seen Koko the Gorilla's paintings? She and one of the other gorillas that live in her compound actually paint some curiously evocative images. ...Sure beats some of the stuff I've run into. :D

Well since this was brought up again, I want to thank the moderators for removing that post/thread. And shame on you all for egging him on! :) A troll lives on the anger and dispair of others. They must not be permitted to grow!!! (sorry, it's time for bed. I think I'll get my PJ's on now...oh wait what's that little spot in my underwear...quick call the art houses, I have a new masterpiece!)

Hey, imagine how much that elephant could make if it painted with its own feces???

One ironic thing about "yesterday's cute little troll" is this tidbit from his profile at DeviantArt:

Oh, I love this thread Modern art is sometimes a catalogue about the human stupidity. I remember the first time I was at Bilbaos Guggenheim Art Museum. I thought watching the works: "or theyre very clever and Im very silly ... or just the opposite thing". Oh, and I remember too a "nice" Jeff Koons exhibition... art, they said, and some photos would be properly for x-rated magazines How many times you see modern art and you think "they are deceiving me"? ... and some people says that Poser people we arent artists ... heh
