Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 09 4:28 pm)
The only way I know how to use Winzip is to right click a file :( I found a work around though. I made another Runtime folder and moved the file I wanted to uncompress to it, ran the uncompress script and then moved the file back to the proper location. I think I'll keep all the files compressed, with the exception of the figure .cr2 files, that way I don't have to worry about uncompressing each time. I wish Poser had script that would uncompress just one file instead of having to target an entire runtime each time. I think I'll put that idea in the Wish Forum.

I have a licensed version of Winzip 8.0. Shouldn't that still have the capability to unzip them?

Hmmm, never heard of that. Whatever it is, it doesn't install. I downloaded the executable .zip and the self extractor. I tried both. Each yields a gzip.exe file which when double clicked gives a DOS window for split second. I don't like that.... now I have to run a virus scan because I'm afraid it may have infected my computer with a virus or trojan or something. It's not suffering any symptoms, but fleeting DOS windows freak me out.

That's right. gzip is a command line utility. By double-clicking it from Explorer gzip starts, finds that it has no command line arguments - ergo, it has nothing to do - and immediately quits. It is not a virus.
By the way, you don't need gzip. Just start Winzip from the Start menu, choose File->Open, set File Type to All files, and select the .crz file you want to uncompress. It opens nicely and you'll see one file contained in the "archive": the .cr2 you were looking for. Drag it from the Winzip window into the character library folder.
Important: rename the .cr2 in the library folder to XXX_uncompressed.cr2. Then make a copy of the .png file that goes with the crz and rename it to XXX_uncompressed.png.
Now you have both a compressed and an uncompressed version of the figure in your library.
The routine you did also works very well, you can separate compressed and uncompressed libraries this way. And if you get short of disk space again, you can always delete the uncompressed libraries again.
By the way, I use Winzip 9.0 SR1. The evaluation version is free, it only has a nag screen at each startup. And if you have any registered version of Winzip, the upgrade to version 9 is free.

Quote - Why so complicated? There is a Python Script included with P5 that uncompresses the files with one click ...
Yes, there is, that's the problem. It only compresses and decompresses in batches... a whole runtime. My problem is is that I've compressed my runtimes using that script, but now find need to run Dial Cleaner on my figure's .cr2 file, but because it's compressed, it's a .crz file and Dial Cleaner can't see those.
I've tried opening Winzip from the start menu, clicking open, and browsing for the file I want to open. I found it and selected "extract" and Winzip can't open it.
I don't know how to use that gzip.exe file. I wasn't asked to locate it. I can't find any installation instructions about where to put it, so I have it sitting in a folder on my desktop. Message edited on: 06/03/2005 17:41

I don't have poser open right now, but I don't believe I had anything like that, which is why I posted asking how to unzip one single file. I select the untility, then compress or uncompress, and I get a window where I have to either type in the path, or use "CTRL V". I have the option to delete the old file, but there isn't a "browse" option that I can find. I posted in the Wish Forum and it seems that someone has already written a script to uncompress or compress a single file in Poser 5. I've installed them and will see how that goes.

I tried it myself with WinZip. From Windows Exploer I right
clicked on a pzz file test.pzz and used the Open With option.
Then I chose WinZip to open it. WinZip had a pop-up asking me
to give the full name of the file extension and I entered test.pz3.
Then there in Winzip there was the uncompressed file and I put
it in a directory.
Then I opened the file with Poser 6 and it looked just fine.

That didn't work for me either. I just tried it and it yielded the same result. After I selected "open with winzip executable", the .crz file appeared in the same window that I got when I went to start/winzip. When I tried to "extract", I get an error saying "could not create...." Maybe it's because it's a .crz file and not a .pzz file, I don't know. But for whatever reason, it's not working for me. I'll try that python script that was given to me in the Wish forum the next time I need to uncompress something, and if that fails, I do the work around with the separate runtime folder.

The scripts are in the linked thread, if anybody else is interested.I uncompressed all the required files with WinZip when I did Glamorous Jessi, as I mentioned above, it seemed simple enough to me. ;-) It was about the easiest thing on the whole project, in fact. I augta add I'm going to have an Objaction version of G.J. (in addition to the RTEncoded one), and it has to work on the uncompressed OBJ files, and the Mac uncompressed files agreed with the PC ones, too.
Winzip will unzip my .pzz files, but NOT the .crz files. That's the problem. I wanted to unzip ONE .crz file and Winzip and Winrar won't unzip them for me. I get an error message of some kind, but when I check the log all it basically says is that it couldn't complete the action.

Now THAT is weird. I just tested on Jessi.crz using Winzip 9.0 SR1, and it extracted just fine.

I have a registered version of 8.0

It doesn't look like it is even setting up the file in the first place to do an extraction, the file listed doesn't seem to be decompressed. In the list of files in WinZip I see Victoria 3 MM.crz instead of Victoria 3 MM.cr2. When I do it, I would get, say, Victoria 3 MM.cr2 in the WinZip list of files. What seems to be happening is that you are trying to extract the .crz, and it already exist, so WinZip balks at trying to write the file that it is working with. Maybe you need a more recent version of WinZip?
Since you have a registered version, you can upgrade to Winzip 9.0 SR1 for free. I'd definitely recommend doing so, I guess Poser uses a more modern version of the zip algorithm.

You lost me there.
I am trying to "decompress" a file. The compressed file I'm trying to decompress is in this example is .... Victoria 3 MM.crz
If it were already a .cr2 file I wouldn't have need to decompress it. I was told Winzip could decompress single .crz files, and it's obviously not working.
I did the exact same steps and used "Extract", when trying this with a compressed .pz3 file (.pzz). And it worked, but it won't work for the .crz file. Anyway, I'm not going to worry about trying to get Winzip to do this anymore. I didn't know that there is already a script available that can be run inside Poser to decompress single files, so I'll use that instead.
I don't really want to upgrade to a more current version of Winzip. I tend to stay with older versions of some programs due to space and memory issues with my computer, and I find that often a newer version tends to take up more space and memory. Winzip 8 zips and unzips .zip files, which is what I use it for. I would get rid of it entirely and go with Winrar, but so many people don't use Winrar, which is my preferred program.

I have compressed my runtime folders using the Poser 5 compress files script. I was told that I could use Winzip to unzip one file if I needed to use Dial Cleaner on it. However, when I right click the file, I don't have an option to unzip the file using Winzip. There are selections to zip the file, but none to unzip it. How do you use Winzip to unzip the .crz file?
