Subject: Firefly Settings

Hey gang I was wondering if anyone has a really good Firefly setting. I always use the Poser 4 settings and it looks a lot better than the Firefly. I know I'm doing something wrong. TIA. Adrian

The "basic" parameters I use on an average render are usually:

Min Shading Rate: 0.25
Pixel Samples: 4
Max Texture Size: this varies per render, but usually I set it to over 2500
Bucket Size: for large renders, I bring the value down between 22 and 32. For normal test renders or any size around 800x600, I'll keep it at default (64).
Post Filter Size: 2
Post Filter Type: Gaussian (sometimes sinc, but never box).

If I'm using a render with raytracing (reflect/refract), I'll set raytrace bounces to 3 as a minimum, and up to 6 for things like Chrome.

Excuse me for nosing in here... =0) Maxxxmodelz- with the above settings you use how long does the render generally take? I too would like to render better images - however my computer isn't "The Best".. but it works... any solutions or tips? Thanks so much!!! Nikita

i dont think there is a "basic setup". It really depends on what you want to do.. As a general rule i advice to turn off reytracing and displacement usage, shadow casting, any extra feature unless you really want to use that feature, since the rendering time jumps with those set. I also advice to use min shade rate 2, pixels sample 3 for test renderings, and max of 1024 texture size. For final render of course everything should be set for the max amount; 0 min shade rate (not only in the rendering setting, but also in the bject itself!), 36 pixel samples, raytrace, shadows displ. set, end any extra feature if you use them. Post filter 2 with sync sounds to be good. But asking even only approximate rendering time is i think you shouldnt do since that really depends on the scene/settings/machine power (in this order)

Gotcha... thanks so much for replying I REALLY appreciate it. =0)

iikuuk, your final render settings are insane - doesn't rendering like that take forever?

Thanks for the help. I never knew any of that stuff so it helps me a lot:-) Adrian

"0 min shade rate (not only in the rendering setting, but also in the bject itself!), 36 pixel samples" If you're using gaussian post filter or sync filter size 2, then you should never need to increase your pixel samples to 36. That's just a waste of processing efficiency, and will compound your render time by at least 4x. 0 shading rate is totally up to you, but I tried rendering a couple test scenes using 0 shading rate on both the object and render settings, and the improvement in quality vs. a setting like 0.2 is almost indistinguishable, but render time nearly doubled. Good balanced settings will help provide better quality vs. speed ratio.

Maxxmodelz ~ What is the differance between box, gaussian and sync filter? And which one do you suggest using? Thanks for all the advice and input! =0) ~ Nikita

Well, when i want to make a final render, i want to make sure everything is at the highest level, and yes, it takes a long time to do it! But hey, who told you rendering a nice image is fast? I just put everything at max, an render it over the night, thats it!
