Subject: *** OFFICIAL JUNE 2005 CHALLENGE ***

drawbridgep ( ) posted Sat, 11 June 2005 at 7:56 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 11:16 AM

PROVERBS

The dictionary describes a proverb as "A short pithy saying in frequent and widespread use that expresses a basic truth or practical precept."

Every culture has them, some make sense and some need a lot of explaining.

For this months challenge, take a proverb and make a picture based on that proverb. I see this as two options.

1 - Literal - A graphic description of the proverb. (eg. A stone rolling down a mossy hill not picking up any moss)

2 - Metaphorical - An image that proves the point of the proverb. (eg. A man holding a sandwich and risks loosing it in order to pick up two sandwiches) ((sorry, not had breakfast yet))

I would suggest you put the proverb in the description to save us guessing.

Normal self governing rules apply. Imports are allowed, postwork to a degree. You know the drill, get to it and make me proud.

Now that's an unusual challenge for the Bryce forum. Nice one Phil!

Hi Phil Seem to remember this Challenge topic being mentioned before!!! Very pleased to see you having the chance to select it this time. Congratulations on your last winning entry. Dennis

:-D cool, now I have to think!

tjohn ( ) posted Sat, 11 June 2005 at 9:37 AM

Great Topic! I like the proverbs that contradict each other. For example: Many hands make light work. Too many cooks spoil the broth. Look before you leap. He who hesitates is lost.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

I never intended to make art.

Now that is an interesting challenge, maybe I'm in. One question, are other modelling programmes allowed, such as Wings or, erm..., let say, uhh..., Cinema 4D? Scene building, composition and rendering would be Bryce, though.

A goodly challenge Phil,..........here are some I've found so far. Some are a bit quirky though. A teacher is better than two books. German Proverb Age is honorable and youth is noble. Irish Proverb An Englishman will burn his bed to catch a flea. Turkish Proverb Anger is as a stone cast into a wasp's nest. Malabar Proverb Do not use a hatchet to remove a fly from your friend's forehead. Chinese Proverb Evil enters like a needle and spreads like an oak tree. Ethiopian Proverb Friends are like fiddle strings, they must not be screwed too tight. English Proverb Give neither counsel nor salt till you are asked for it. Italian Proverb God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. Jewish Proverb God heals, and the physician takes the fee. French Proverb Good as drink is, it ends in thirst. Irish Proverb Gray hairs are death's blossoms. English Proverb He that can't endure the bad will not live to see the good. Jewish Proverb He that marries for money will earn it. American Proverb He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever. Chinese proverb He who holds the ladder is as bad as the thief. German Proverb If God lived on earth, people would break his windows. Jewish Proverb

Dennis - :-) Yeah, but your idea was better. To those who don't know, I won a challenge a while back, joint first place with Dennisld and threw this idea into the ring. Which was rejeted in favour of the underwater theme. Which actually went down well. I hope this does as well. roobol - My feeling is that you can do whatever you want and the voters will judge if it fits within the spirit of the challenge. Creations - Doesn't have to be English. Most of the most common proverbs are from countries other than England (as sackrats list shows). Try a google search and you're bound to find loads of links.

the good news is that now that I got that out of my system, I don't think I'll be doing it again.

Nice Idea!! A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush Look before you leap Pride comes before a fall Marry in haste - repent at leisure Don't speak ill of the dead Waste not - want not Make hay while the sun shines Don't take a bull by the horns You can't be optomistic with a misty-optic (??);-) Red sky at night - shepherd's delight, Red sky in the morning - shepherd's warning. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. (Actually not true - you can shoot your mother-in-law!) Any port in a storm Sailors have a girl in every port - not true - there are three places I haven't been to yet. The early bird get's the worm. Don't fall on a knife pointing upwards! Lightning never strikes the same place twice!

The sht is always the same. Its the flies that change.* Portuguese proverb. There are 17 words for wind. But none for the one that issues from the Imam's mouth. Egyptian proverb. They say there are 7 girls for every guy here. That really pisses me off! Someone's running around with 14 girls. California proverb If you can keep your head while all those about you are losing their's. You may very well have missassessed the situation. My personal favourite.
