Subject: OT: need help downloading files with Mozilla Firefox

I am having an issue with Mozilla Firefox and Yahoo Mail and I am getting really, really sick of it.

Whenever I try download a file with a "" in the name (for example "boat_test.lwo", a Lightwave file), Firefox drops everything after the "" (the file is now named just "boat", an unknown file).
This is really bad when my sister sends me photos called "Disney_World_Vacation_2005_023.jpg". F-ing Firefox tries to save the file as just "Disney". I have to manually rename ALL the photos that she sends.

See the screen shot for what's happening. You can see the real name of the file is "boat_3.lwo", but after I hit the "Download Attachment" button, Firefox wants to save it as "boat". If Firefox did not cut off the name of the file, the dialog box would show the complete name and would say "Open With Lightwave Modeler".

Does anyone have any good ideas about why this is happening? I'm using the latest version of Firefox on Windows XP.

I don't know if this issue is only occurring with Yahoo Mail or not- I haven't downloaded any files with the "_" character from any other sites.

I have saved both jpg's and zip files that have multiple underscores with Firefox. It might be a Yahoo issue. Can you right click the images as use the Save Image As option?

Must be a Yahoo problem. I have saved every file I have wanted to with Firefox and it has never renamed anything, includes all the dots dashes and underscores.

I don't use Yahoo email... I am members of Yahoo groups, but have the mail sent to my outlook express address. Try google's gmail. I have about 50 invites left if you want to receive an invite. Just PM me your email address that you want the invite sent to and I'll send it. It has a huge mail box, and allows POP3 so you can forward it to yur outlook express if you want.

I was tempted to suggest dumping firefox for microsoft internet explorer, but that would have just been facetious.

I was tempted to suggest dumping firefox for microsoft internet explorer, but that would have just been facetious. I would hope so... since I dumped IE to use Firefox. :) I tried using Opera, but it wasn't compatible with the Renderosity Product Upload screens. :( I think everyone may be right about this being a Yahoo Mail issue. I'll keep an eye on other downloads to see if it happens with other sites. --John

i've never had a problem downloading any files from yahoo mail. i use it all the time. it doesn't change file names as far as i've ever seen. but i use IE, so maybe its a combo thing with yahoo and firefox. you might check your internet options, or mail options. E.D.

I suspect Yahoo..but that's me. Removing it has solved a lot of problems over the years.

It's a Y! problem (again...) I've noticed exactly the same thing happening only with Y! Mail, and never anywhere else, not even when saving files from Y! Groups. Using the current Firefox build, no odd plugins or anything. The only solution I can offer is to watch your saved filenames carefully and type in the missed-out bits. That's what I'm reduced to doing... :P

Well its not JUST Yahoo mail. I use it all the time with Netscape and have never seen the problem.

JHoagland ( ) posted Mon, 20 June 2005 at 7:37 PM

Well its not JUST Yahoo mail Ype, it sounds like it's the combination of using Mozilla Firefox AND Yahoo Mail. IE users are safe... as long they remember to install their weekly service packs so they're not affected by DSO exploits, bad scripts, bad ActiveX controls, etc. :) And Netscape users shouldn't be affected by this issue either. --John
