Just wanted to let you know that we are upping the FREE Amapi downloads to 120 per day. Go grab yourself some free software!

Nosfiratu ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 3:25 PM

Say.. the Amapi DLs... they legal? Just checking :-)

InDepth ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 3:30 PM

If by legal you mean a representative from TGS contacted me and gave me express written premission to make the download available through my site then yes it is legal :-) Just kidding... it is 100% legal AND endorsed by TGS. Eric

nfredman ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 5:35 PM

Thank you! i got my download & key. They're coming out with Amapi 5, soon, aren't they? i wonder what it'll cost to go from our cheapie version to the new good stuff. Sweet marketing move. :^)

InDepth ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 5:39 PM

Actually rumor has it that the users who download from In Depth will get a special upgrade price too... but thats just a rumor :-)

Poppi ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 8:53 PM

Well, I don't get out much. I have my Poser, Bryce and Max...what is this Amapi? I have heard the name, but never taken notice, before. T'was the word "FREE" that brought me to attention.

InDepth ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 8:55 PM

Poppi, Visit http://www.tgs.com That should be able to get you accquainted :-) Eric

Eric: Thanks for the free software, but how useful to us is a product that can't read or write the WaveFront .OBJ format that's the backbone of most Poser files? If I understand it correctly, I can create props and new character meshes, but unlike Rhino, 3DStudioMAX or even a 1995 copy of Ray Dream Studio, I can't do any kind of morphs of existing Poser meshes. Is a more current non-free version able to import/export this format? Is the plugin API open source to allow developers to create a WaveFront plugin? Sorry for pelting you with all these questions but without WaveFront support this one's going next to the free Strata3D folder gathering dust on my hard drive -- unless there's something obvious I'm overlooking, and you have my apologies in advance if that's the case

InDepth ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 11:14 PM

Let me look into that Duane. I seem to remember Michelle Surges importing a Poser figure into Amapi during her review of Amapi but that was version 5. I will check with Philip from TGS and try to find an answer. Eric

duanemoody ( ) posted Wed, 14 February 2001 at 11:41 PM

Thanks greatly for looking into it... the main concern is that yes, you could convert an .obj to .3ds and work with it in Amapi that way, but the vertex order will be lost, making the mesh useless as a morph. Again, I don't want to rain on your parade; you're doing us a service by offering any free software at your own expense, but I'd kinda like something practical for fine detail morph work.

When does the count refresh each day? Everytime I wander over, it says that the max has been reached for the day.(I've been checking several times a day, including 12AM EST.) Thanks!

InDepth ( ) posted Thu, 15 February 2001 at 11:31 AM

Crescent, The count doesn't refresh every day.... it really starts when I open up the download page. I am trying to randomize it for now to be fair since people from both the East and West coasts (as well as all over the world) are trying to get it. I will tell you that both 60 download windows will open up sometime this evening after 6:00PM EST. One other problems is that the 60 downloads go so quick. We had 60 people download it inside of a half an hour yesterday. Do not worry though... I have been told by TGS that this will be a semi-permanent feature, meaning we won't stop offering it until interest dies out. Eric

Eric, thanks so much for the update. I have been staking out the site the whole day too, for fear that the wonderful offer will be over before I get a chance to download the program. Hopefully the good news from TGS will help to ease the congestion at the site when the download windows open. I am not in a hurry to get the program as long as I know that I can get it eventually. Thanks again for a great opportunity.

poserpro ( ) posted Thu, 15 February 2001 at 2:43 PM

obj is seemingly supported in future version, acc. to TGS. but if you have carrara, that's another story.

nitreug ( ) posted Thu, 15 February 2001 at 11:21 PM

Impossible to download even if I go there 20 times per day. If they want us to try the software, why not giving a trial or demo version to try it instead of having a copy which we cannot download. I think this is just advertising and nothing else.

InDepth ( ) posted Thu, 15 February 2001 at 11:25 PM

Whatever Nitreug. If you would provide me with the money required to keep the download up all day I would be more than happy to leave it up all day. Fact is though that right now the 60 downloads from my server go by in about a half an hour. It will slow down eventually.

InDepth ( ) posted Thu, 15 February 2001 at 11:43 PM

Duanemoody, Here is what Philip from TGS said regarding the importing of OBJ files: "OBJ will be in the upcoming Amapi 6 in March. Import/export, including Nurbs. And I believe also with u,v textures support." Hope this helps some. Eric

nitreug ( ) posted Fri, 16 February 2001 at 9:59 PM

Now The site ask a username and password? WHat are they? Do they have a default one?

InDepth ( ) posted Fri, 16 February 2001 at 10:00 PM

I am on the phone with tech support right now. This is not intentional.

InDepth ( ) posted Fri, 16 February 2001 at 10:11 PM

Its back online.... run! run! 7 downloads already done!

nitreug ( ) posted Sat, 17 February 2001 at 1:04 AM

I would like to say a big thank you to the person from Indepth because that person answered me very fast to all my requests. This kind of answers say to me that this company is very well customers oriented. I did not try the software yet but if all companies were like that it will be very much simpler to make business on the net. Big thanks to InDepth organization and mostly to the person who answer me so promtly. Claude

InDepth ( ) posted Sat, 17 February 2001 at 1:12 AM

Well thank you. I like hearing how well I am doing since it is just me running In Depth. In Depth isn't a company it's one guy running a website in his off hours when he gets home from work. I also have to listen to my wife complain about how much time I spend on the site since we don't make any money off of it. Thanks again for your kind words. Eric

lplp1 ( ) posted Sat, 17 February 2001 at 1:44 PM

I must say Eric is truly a gentleman. He not only help me when I ran into trouble downloading the Ampi file, he also gave tips on how to use the application, thus shortining the learning curve. This app will provide the continued challenges that artist need. Thanks Eric

InDepth ( ) posted Sat, 17 February 2001 at 3:35 PM

Your welcome. I am trying to make everyone happy... its hard but I am trying :-)

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 17 February 2001 at 6:04 PM

I'm downloading the program right now. I really appreciate your efforts in giving us the opportunity to try this program! Have a great weekend!

Hell I've seen posted downloads hit 500 - 1000 in no time. I can't think of better advertisement than to give out free stuff. Look at the hits here. I'm not all that fimiliar with how sights stay up financially but, I would guess it have something to do with hits.
