Subject: Poser 6. Want to buy it. But PC or Mac?

Ok. I have a question. Im about to purchase Poser 6. I havent really messed around with it since Poser 4. Since there is no longer a hybrid CD Im going to have to decide wether to get it for PC or Mac. Here are my specs: PC: 3.0 GHZ 2GB Ram ATI 800XL 256mb video card. Sony 20" Monitor Mac: 1.8 GHZ G5 20" iMac 1.25 GB Ram Geforce FX5200 64mb video card. Now I like doing my creative work on the Mac but I have the PC version of every creative mac peice of software as well. I know my PC is more powerful than my iMac but Im chomping at the bit to pick up Poser 6 I just wanted some advice or guidance.

Well it sounds like you have a really good PC and of course Windows XP would be a better choice. It's very stable with Poser 6. At least on this end anyway. Someone else may have another opinion. I'm not much of a MAC fan cause it has limited software for it. Adrian

My vote would be the PC. Although using OS X means you're free from trojans, adware, spyware, viruses, hard disk crashes, etc., that PC is clearly better equipped, and there are still no OS X versions of utilities like UVMapper Pro.

I use Mac many years, but only have problems and problems. I shopping one PC, Pentium 4 with XP, this week. My first PC in 15 years with computers. With Apple I have only problems, kernels panic, etc.

I would suggest PC because it seems like quite a few of the secondary progams (like uv mapper and such) are pc only. and there are several python scripts that dont work on a mac.

Poser 6 on the Mac is very poor. Poser makes very little use of the advanced OSX and PPC features. Poser 6 is still locked into an old version of Python so advanced scripts have problems. The Mac is also a second class citizen in the poser community, especially when it comes to third party support. While I have found that the Mac is a better computer in many many respects. You will have problems with whatever platform you choose, they will just be different sorts of problems. Select your poison. Estruch: If you are having kernel panics then there's something wrong with your Mac. This is not normal.

PC. Two reasons: you're gonna LOVE the 2 GB you've got in that PC, as you will love that X800 board (make sure you have the best drivers for it, OpenGL on ATI doesn't always work like it should). And PoserPython on the Mac has lots of problems. Any script using Tkinter (about 75% of all scripts available) will not work on he Mac.

All of the above statement about the mac are true. (except for the one about no software. unless you are looking for a specific piece of software or the latest games many creative apps are mac and pc.)
Fact is for all its worth I enjoy using the mac while I don't particularly enjoy using PC's. For Poser your PC is going to be a better fit. (I would still use the mac though, but that's just me)

how do you like the iMac by the way? my sister-in-law is considering one. (Are they noisy like the towers?)

Oh yea and If your mac is panicking you have a problem. Remove a usb hub if you have one attached. try running without it connected for while. Also check your RAM. If all that fails try a fresh install. And last take it in for service. It should not crash. I had a problem with mine and after trying everything I took it in. It ended up being a bad processor. Once they put new ones in it has been rock solid. (And it runs for months at a time between reboots.)

I try to support "David" Mac over "Goliath" Wintel, but it's hard to support a company as litigious as Apple. Even though Apple has a somewhat of a "free-thinking" reputation, their corporate lawyers have no problems impinging on people's freedom of speech. Of course, I'm talking about Apple's witch hunt over three online journalism sites, and in a separate case, against three Canadian students. Apple's Digital Rights Management (DRM) for iPod is ironically named "FairPlay." If anyone tries to reverse engineer it, they will probably get an Apple lawsuit faster than you can say "Digital Millennium Copyright Act"

As a big-time Mac advocate and long time Mac user, I would also recommend using your PC for Poser. rather than your Mac.

I run Poser 4/pp and 5 (not 6 yet) on my Mac with no problems, but am frustrated by the fact there is little or no support for 3rd party plug-ins and utils for Poser.

For everything else, I love my Macs.

Thanks everyone for their input. I was leaning to getting it for PC and you guys just helped me in my choice. I love my Mac too. I have copies of all my regualr arsenal for both machines. Painter 9, Creative Suite, Macromedia 2004 Suite, etc....but Im usually gaming on my PC and working on my Mac. PC it is! Thanks again.
