Subject: import vector art?

First of all, let me say that some of you guys (girls) on this forum are very talented! wow! Since i'm totally new to vue5 i would like to ask a very basic question and feel free to refer me to links or thread that could help me. Is there a easy way to import, let say, a vector file and be able to give that file some dimension (bevels)? I need to create a 3d logo based on something i did in Illustrator cs2 and it would save me some time to just take the logo from its vector state into vue5. How would you suggest i do this? Thanks for your time!

Unfortunately there is no way. Vue (whatever version) is no modeller. But you have several options to get the logo into Vue, with the help of some other software. #1 You can convert the vector work into a font - there is software that can do that and use this font then with the text editor in Vue. That you can extrude, bevel and then animate/render in Vue. #2 make a bitmap out of the vector file with Photoshop for example. Use that then for a terrain and get the logo through that in 3D. Beveling would be a little difficult, this must be done in Photoshop with gradations of gray beforehand. #3 look for a (free) modeller that can deal with vector files. I don't have the specifications on me but Wings3D or Blender are two examples for such programs. Check it out wether they can deal with eps or ai files. From there you can export the 3D logo in a format that Vue can read (3ds or obj normally). This you then can render in Vue. Hope that helps a little.

thanks for your quick reply! I didn't know such free program even existed!!...3d is new to me and i think i've got a long way to go... So i'll take your advice and check them out. Thank you again!

You maybe want to look into our Backroom. There you find a lot of links you could check out. To free modellers as well. Feel free to ask, that is the purpose of places like this. Oh, and good luck with the first steps!

blender cant deal with eps/ai files as far as i know.

but its otherwise quite an interesting and powerful free 3d modeller.

oh another idea is to use Rhino. Ok Rhino demo version lets you save 25 times iirc. I can't recall what formats the CURRENT rhino imports in, but it does allow you to create GREAT designs! Rhino is dead easy to learn especially if you're used to vector art, as it's mostly workign with curves, you can edit points, "nodes" in 2d apps, or solids you can boolean. To buy, Rhino is expensive unless you get an educational license, but I cannot recommend it enough. ah rhino supported formats: DWG/DXF(AutoCAD 200x, 14, 13, and 12 ), SAT (ACIS), X_T (Parasolid), 3DS, LWO, STL, OBJ, AI, RIB, POV, UDO, VRML, BMP, TGA, CSV (export properties and hydrostatics), uncompressed TIFF, STEP, VDA, GHS, SLC, Deep Paint 3D. dunno if any there of use ot ya bud. Additonally, you COULD export your design as *seperate layers* with transparent backgrounds, such as a tiff or psd file format. bring each of them into Vue as seperate billboards, thus allowing you to create a 2D image but with depth, ie stacked like a pack of cards space apart, which can give quite interesting visuals.

wow, thanks for all the replies! Ok, i took some time to make my logo in Blender using the beziers curves witch was very easy. Even took some time to fool around with the camera/lights/textures...BUT...and there's a BUT...i can't export it so that VUE5 can import it! i have tried almost all of the export choices in Blender but VUE5 seems to have trouble reading them...again i need some tips from the experts :-) How can i make VUE5 read a file from Blender!? I'm using Mac os x 10.4 by the way...if this is any help. thanks again!

Where is our blender guru criss? It does not work to export the logo in obj format? And import that to Vue 5? This is odd. Or 3ds, same method. But impressive how quick you are. And obviously successful so far.

That's odd indeed. i have tried almost every export extention in the list but vue5 always seem to be unable to read them. Maybe it's on my part. Should i do something specific before creating the export file? Maybe i should run some test with wings3d (the only other soft i have) and see if it opens them? Thanks.

Oh, maybe a stupid question. What was the way you tried to read the files in Vue? I hope you used "Import object"!

yeah, i used the IMPORT OBJECT function... i tried to search on the BLENDER forum for this kind of import problem without any luck... Since i'm at work i can't do any test but i'll try some tonight. Thanks for your help Wabe!

Just Checked and Shade Designer Lite can inport an .eps file and export it as a wavefront or .obj. It is very cheap if you have Poser which a lot of Vue users have to get people into scenes. Check out Curious Labs.

Yes it works. I mported an .eps file into Shade and exported it as an .obj and then imported it into Vue and Poser. Thanks Swoosh55 for the question as it made me think about options that I hadn't thought of. Glenn

well, i tested wings3d to import my .obj and it didn't work either...is it possible that blender export unreadable .obj files?... Is there a workaround/plugins...something out there!? thanks again for your help! I'll check back later.

Since i'm unable to export this as a .obj, i was wondering how, in blender, i would create a crystal version of my logo. Plus, how can i make a reflection on the ground...? Man, all these things seem so more easy in VUE5...

Looks fantastic for a first one. Congratulations. I think you still need to find out what is wrong with the export from Blender. Have you tried other formats as well? 3ds for example, lwo etc etc. I tested obj now as well - without success here (Blender and Vue on Mac).

Sorry for this late response (thank you, Walther, for reminding me, I read very rare the Forum).

You can make a valid Blender-to-Vue export in many formats, for example:

  1. lwo (LightWave) - the best in my opinion (support multi-texturing, perfect compatibility);
  2. obj (WaveFront) - good (including textures, multi-tex);
  3. cob (TrueSpace) - not so good for multiple objects.

If you want to use the .lwo format you must install Python too.

In Blender, before the export command, you must select only the object/objects you want to export. Don't select lights or camera.

I did tried ohter format without succes... Wabe are telling me you reproduced that trouble on your side? Blender don't even open his own export .obj... Something i noticed is that the exported .obj file is no more than 4ko...shouldn't it be bigger? Criss, if i don't select anything and export as .obj what would be the outcome? could this be the missing action in my export attempt? if so, i'll try it coming back from work tonight. Thank you

well people, nothing happens...it is like if the export function on Blender (os x) doesn't work (on my mac at least)... Could someone give me some hope and tell me it is working on there macs...!?

just to confirm this... i went and downloaded some free 3d model of the net (.lwo) Opened it in VUE and BLENDER without an itch... Took the same file and tried to export it as a .obj from BLENDER to VUE and it didn't work!!! the file is unreadable by VUE... Am i the only one with this problem under TIGER!? if so, maybe a new installation of Blender might help right?

I exported my last object (the last medieval castle for Vue) in .obj and .lwo and both works perfectly! I have Blender 2.37a (with Python installed) and Vue 4.2. The .obj export command generate two files: object.obj and object.mtl (materials index). You must copy both where you want. The dimensions of files are, for my last castle: castle.lwo - 42 k castle.obj - 460 k !!! castle.mtl - 4 k .obj files are a little big... Install Python and use always the .lwo export format, it is the best IMO. Maybe you must install Python for .obj export, too... If you have any problem, we can make an experiment with the same objects, just send me your email, but first, try to install Python. You are sure you import that objects correctly in Vue (if other .lwo files from the NET don't work)?

maybe i'm wrong but, didn't Tiger shipped with a version of Python already installed?...i'm baffled a bit with all this Python thing...what does it do exacly?...is it user friendly cause i'm a complete ignorant in regard to scripting... Thanks for your time criss!

You don't need to know or do anything with Python. Just install it, is very small and harmless for your system. If you have Python installed, the .lwo export works, otherwise it don't work. Many plugins who comes with Blender don't work if you don't have Python. Unfortunately, I don't know "Tiger". Try to export in .lwo format, then in Vue try the "Import Object" command. I used very frequent this format from Blender to Vue and it works perfectly. PS: you need the last stable version of Python. Maybe Tiger comes with an old version and the exports are not compatible!?

PS: your start in Blender is fantastic, cograts! If you want a ground reflection for your logo, add a plane below and make it reflective.
