Subject: Question about Poserworld experiences

ptrope ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:23 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 1:52 AM

I just signed up for a month of Poserworld, and downloaded a ton o' stuff. I finally got a chance to extract the files tonight, and I almost went ballistic - does PW have no standards for the items that are offered? I haven't even gotten a chance to use the items yet, because half of them have unusable paths to the components that I'm going to have to go in and fix on an individual basis; textures out of paths, no Runtime structure at all for a lot of them. It's just a freakin' mess!

Has it always been this way? Has anyone else been as disappointed with this as I am? Just because it's cheap, I don't see that as a reason for the creators to not put the same sort of effort into their products as those of us here do, nor do I expect the site to completely ignore such sloppiness - after all, it reflects back on them, too.

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:31 PM

I haven't had a problem with the paths to components at all. Make sure you read the readme file for each file so that you place the .obj and .jpg files in the proper directories. Some .obj files go in the geometries folder in the PW folder, while others in the pwfw folder. Texture files go in the PW textures files, but I found some with their own folder called PWFW_Textures. At first I too had problems in locating .obj and texture files. Once I realized I needed to unzip one file at a time and sort the contents according to the readme with it, I was ok. The content that they offer is great, especially considering the amount of the membership and the enormous quantity of files you have available to access. Personally given that I'm forgiving of the lack of runtime folders and the NEED to read the readme for placement.

See, this is the problem, in my opinion: the fact that you HAVE to unzip each one separately and then go in and put everything where it belongs. We don't get away with that here, as merchants, and it's the easiest thing in the world to zip up our content with the folder structure intact so our customers DON'T have to do that. Hasn't it occurred to these people that it's MORE work to have everything in the correct place for developing and testing their products, and then to dump them all into a bucket, as it seems they've done, than to simply zip them up the right way in the first place? I just can't comprehend this sort of clumsiness.

nakamuram ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:45 PM

You might have downloaded some of their older stuff. Most of their newer (V3 and Later) items unzip nicely into their proper paths. I use WinXP's built-in unZip. Maybe you should check the settings on your unZIP utility.

Letterworks ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:51 PM

ptrope, Part of the "problem" is that Poserworld has been around for so long. PWFW was PoserWorld and Fairy Woods, the site name several years ago with Steve's former partner. It may not even be legal for him to change those paths. As I remember Rendo's filaes USED to be just a s much of a mess. I haven't had much problem with the newer stuff. Oh, and I ALWAYS arrange files in my own run times, even the ones bought here and at DAZ (I HATE those loaders!)since I rarely agree with some of the names and paths merchant's use (How many "!!!" can you put in front of your names to get to the top of the list). Different strokes for different folks , I guess. VERY HAPPY LIFE TIME MEMBER, mike

ptrope ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:54 PM

Right now I'm dealing exclusively with props and scenes; I haven't unzipped any figures or clothing. I use PowerDesk Pro, which maintains folder structures; the problem is that many of these don't have any folder structures at all - they just all dump into the main folder where they're unzipped. Of course, this also means a lot of duplicate filenames. So I guess I'll just delete everything I unzipped, do them one at a time, and then go in and build the damn folders that should've been there in the first place, along with editing the files so the paths aren't nonsense like "D:My TexturesPWFW worksFloor_TEX.jpg"

Man, this is irritating and senseless :-(

bjbrown ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 8:57 PM

A few years ago, most .zip files of content required extraction of different groups of components in the correct folders. The more recent content on PoserWorld now uses paths in the .zip files. The old .zip files never particularly bothered me because I'm in the habit of checking .zip files to see if I have to extract commponents separately. I don't know how much work it would be for them to go back and re-zip the older files. You could always give feedback and suggest it.

bjbrown ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 9:00 PM

It sounds like some of those files have directory paths, but you need to unzip them to your Runtime folder.

There is a utility I have a love-hate relationship with, PoserLoader from Wolfie. I love it because you can just extract all your package contents into a folder, and it will put everything in its right place, and even do objaction extraction/RTE encoding for you on the really weird stuff. I Hate it because it has always eventually stopped working for me on a poser installation for completely unknown reasons, but not usually until i've used it for months. It's also got a sister program Poser Extractor that does the same magic steps in reverse, but seems to suffer from the same problem. Anyway, if you have OLD poser zips, grab a copy of poserloader.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 9:15 PM

The older files don't have pathnames, or have nonstandard pathnames. (It wasn't standardized back then!)

The new files all have proper pathnames. They are working on fixing the old files, but it's a balance: fix the old products, or make new ones? Probably most of their customers would prefer that they make new ones. Still, Lyrra has been working on re-packaging the old files so they meet today's standards.

Berserga ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 9:24 PM

I believe they were going back and redoing some of the older items at one point. I think they started with V2 clothing maybe... Been a while. Anyway, It is a royal pain, but the newer stuff all has proper paths, and There has been some really great stuff released since I've been a member (I'm a lifer)I never use much of the really old stuff, though now that I have Wardrobe Wizard there are some old outfits I might just need to try!

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 21 July 2005 at 9:43 PM

I never install anything to the runtimes. When I install I install/unzip to a folder on my desktop called "unzipped", that has a runtime and a poser.exe file in it. That way I can rename and move files around, and then when I'm done I move the runtime to the final runtime where it all falls into place. I find that by doing this, I've saved myself problems if I've accidently installed to the wrong runtime (I have several).

Poserworld has been around a very long time. Many of their items are quite old, much older than the convention of zipping things with the paths (possibly, WinZip didn't have that option five years ago, I dunno). They have been going through their older materials and re-zipping them so they unzip properly, but that does take time. I also agree with those who have said that it's never a good idea to unzip things directly to your Poser directory. I always, ALWAYS unzip EVERYTHING to a temporary directory first, run CorrectReference on it, change any folder names (I have my own system of organizing stuff), etc., and only then do I move it to my actual Poser runtime(s). Yes, it IS frustrating to unzip something expecting it to behave a certain way, no question about it, and when I first discovered that the older PW files weren't zipped with directories, I was dismayed, BUT it's only the older files and they are working on fixing them all (there are only so many hours in a day ;-), and the overall quality and value is excellent, so I figure I can take the extra couple of minutes to unzip to a temp directory and manually move the files to where they ought to go (and the paths are always listed in the readme, so I don't have to guess). bonni

A lot of the older stuff is being re-packaged into the proper runtime file structure but it takes time considering there's so much of it, plus new items coming out. Mostly it's props, sets and poses that need to be manually placed. I don't mind it -- much -- since the quality more than makes up for the minor inconvenience. Btw, all the P4 outfits are now in runtime folders when you unzip them.

On behalf of PoserWorld I apologize for the frustation you are experiancing with some of our content. Unfortunately, over 5 years of existance and more than 5,000 files we have quite a large pile of files to go back and conform to modern standards. Way back when, at the dawn of PoserTime, users all expected to put content into Poser manually. Nowadays people expect zip files with directories to make life simpler. (I dont blame them ... I certainly appreciate it too) We are doing our best to fix our older content, but the fact of the matter is that PoserWorld is two artists and that we have to balance our time between maintenance like this, and making new content. If theres any particular file that you are having difficulties with please let me know here or on the PoserWorld subscribers message board and I will make sure to help you out as much as I can. ps yes I will finish the repacking .. been distracted by WardrobeWizard conversions :) Lyrra PoserWorld - Texture Artist Ex-Evil Overlord

I'd just like to echo what Lyrra says and thank her (lots) for doing the repacking....and thank everyone else for explaining....Also like to add, we NEVER take a file down once its up it stays up, it may be old, it may be that old its not very good :o) but you never know when you are desperate for a Poser 3 airbed LOL.....Lots more coming Niles, i'm away this next week (but have the laptop) then i'm planning a real 3d binge, got so many ideas in my head it hurts LOL........Steve

It is worth the money to get utilities like PInstall by markDC, and CorrectRef Pro by Hogsoft. People make mistakes. The artists who make products, the people who buy products... especially with the sheer weight of all of the available add-ons. Its gonna happen. I would be lost without PInstall and Correct Ref Pro; I'd also be lost without my lifetime membership to PoserWorld. Though, the guys could really use some more clothes, Steve. ;-)

I have found PW to be both responsive and friendly.

If you have a request, they do make an effort to respond to it.

PW is a fantastic deal. They are one of the best content providers around. Even with old .zip's.

Francemi ( ) posted Fri, 22 July 2005 at 5:57 PM

I bought a lifetime subscription to Poserworld earlier this year and I never regretted it for one minute. Sure I downloaded lots of stuff that wasn't sorted in a runtime but by that time, I already knew how to sort them so I did... MY WAY. Now I don't have a folder PWFW, PW, PW Textures, PW Texture files, etc. I only have one texture folder "PW" and one geometries folder "PW" and everything is where it should be. I did it all manually because I trust no program like I trust myself. loll I would not hesitate to recommend buying a lifetime subscription to Poserworld. In fact, I offered a 6-month subscription to a friend a few weeks ago and I encouraged her to change it to a lifetime sub and she did. I am 100% certain she'll never regret it either. BTW, have you noticed that all the stuff you buy or get for free at Content paradise have the object files in the character library? And does it bother someone else than me that all we buy at DAZ have only RSR thumbnail files and no PNG? Geez! I am one of the founders of 3dSaraCreations.com and Project Manager there: we create huge projects and we offer everything for free and all the files are zipped correctly in their respective folders and we provide both PNG and RSR files and we check to make sure the file version is 4.01 so Poser 4 users can use everything without problems. IMO, a big company could do at least as well as we do. And everything I downloaded from Poserworld in the last months has been packed correctly and all required files were there too.

Steve Shanks is the best. If you have a request for a particular item he'll go the extra distance to try and create it for you. A little inconvenience never hurt anybody so just extract the files manually and put them away. :-)

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

"BTW, have you noticed that all the stuff you buy or get for free at Content paradise have the object files in the character library?" thats because poser 6 can read the OBJ from ethier folder. EF changed that. so it is actually correct.

Acadia ( ) posted Sat, 23 July 2005 at 12:09 AM

But it's a problem for anyone not using Poser 6 :P

reads fine for poser 5. as to poser 4.. how old is that now? time to move on... also. why have the OBJ there, texture over there and the cr2 here? makes more sense to have it all in 1 folder for each model / package don't you think?

nakamuram ( ) posted Sat, 23 July 2005 at 1:06 AM

I agree with you Khai -- Something like a Dress Folder with the .cr2s and .objs and Texture and MAT sub-folders makes more sense. Too bad it won't work with Poser 4. And too bad items with .pz2 extension have to be in the Poses folder. Maybe this will change in Poser 7...

Francemi ( ) posted Sat, 23 July 2005 at 1:20 AM

Although I agree with you that it would be simpler to have everything in the same folder, I would like to know WHY there is a folder Geometries and a folder Textures in Poser 6 if nobody is going to use them? I leave everything in the libraries if they are packed that way but since Poser 6 looks for objects and textures first in the same folder as the Poser file, it should not have those folders at all. And both Poser 5 and Poser 6 save the object in the character library if you save a model as a cr2. Which IMO is illogical since they say to put objects in Geometries and textures in Textures. It seems to me it is a case of "Do what I say, not what I do." Where I do NOT agree is when you say "as to poser 4.. how old is that now? time to move on..." It is not everyone who have the means to move on, as you say. And because we are lucky enough to be able to do so, we should punish those who don't? I'd like to point out that many of the most generous and excellent freebie providers still work in Poser 4... I sure hope they won't decide to move on to market places!

well since poser Four was released nearly, what, 8 years ago, we should support it for the next 50? we are now on version SIX. You do know that other software firms have stopped supporting old versions? Discreet don't support Max 1-2-3-4, Newtek stopped supporting Lightwaves 1-5, Caligari stopped supporting everything older than version 5 of trueSpace last year.. oh and try getting support for windows 3.11 from M$.

things move on. thats life.

Just a friendly reminder that Poser Artist -- a current product -- is Poser 4 repackaged and is just as picky as it was before being repackaged. So the "move on" doesn't quite hold water since it is being offered as an Entry level package. Once Paser Artist is upgraded beyond Poser 4, then yes, I will agree wholeheartedly. But otherwise, telling all these people who just bought a brand new copy of Poser Artist to "move on" or "deal with it" is sorta, well, rude.

I think it's pretty rude anyway. I was just looking at an image in the gallery by a well known Renderosity artist and she still uses Poser4 as do I. Some of us actually LIKE Poser4.

hmm you were reading Who's reply? well it wasn't MY reply. I don't see how "things move on. thats life." becomes "telling all these people who just bought a brand new copy of Poser Artist to "move on" or "deal with it" is sorta, well, rude." so, to those that read what they want to read and not what is actually written, I suggest you go back and read the words on the screen. not the ones you've made up in your heads. rude yes. why? because you charged in here and accused me of something I did not say and edited my words to show I said it.

Khai ( ) posted Sat, 23 July 2005 at 3:34 PM

and btw - at no point did I say "move on" or "deal with it" I was pointing out that the specifications for the software are changing. Poser 5 - 6 handles things differently to poser 4. things move on. thats life.
