Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 11 12:18 am)
Since noone caught the 'x64' bit (get it! ahhh, nevermind... ;p ), maybe I'll try it later to see how it works. Which version of Poser are you using so that I can install and try the same?

Hiya! Just switched back to 32bit, because I could not get a proper driver for my graph card. Without OpenGL, poser 6 slows down a lot. The OS is faster on x64, but even with the freshest catalyst drivers, just the primary display options were available... Wait until proper drivers appear for each hardware.
By the sounds of it, he's using an ATI. I strictly use NVidia.

From what I've seen and read, there is a slight speed increase given by going 64-bit. The big advantage is in address space, but we won't be seeing much gain in that respect until software companies start migrating their software to true 64-bit. My 'workhorse' system is a dual Xeon with WinXP Pro, but it's an older 32-bit. My 64-bit system is a 939-socket AMD (to allow transition to dual core AMDs when available and affordable) with WinXP Pro x64. I haven't done much with it yet as I've been ridiculously busy of late and it doesn't have an internet connection (but it does have a wireless card).

I read on the efrontier webstie something about this that 64 bit is fine if using poser 6 but not with poser 5. Love esther
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Just got a new computer in the past month. Athalon 64 FX55, 2GB RAM, 2 NVida cards, Win XP Pro SP2,abspc.com works great! I have locked up P6 on it a few times but that happened worse on the old comp. I like to push things sometimes just to see and scenes with a lot of objests mainly trees and plants slow it down or I've gotten the "not enough memory" message twice. I like to use raytrace and IBL/AO lighting also and that slows the render some. But hey, my longest render so far has been about 45 min, lol. My old, old computer with Bryce 4 was sometimes 6-8 hrs render so I'm not complaining with an hour render at most. I'm not sure if the 64 bit comes into play right now as I think P6 is 32 bit. Good to be prepaired for the future if your upgradeing or buying a new machine.
Is a 64 bit pc actually much faster than a 32 bit? No and yes... The extra 32bit address space don't make anything faster, rather slower (more data to more around). However, the Athlon64 (and I would assume the compatible intel chips as well) have some other architectural changes (more registers) that can speed up software that is explicitly compiled for them. That speed gain has nothing to do with 64bit.
not sur eif Poser works with XP64 or not, but it will address much more ram...so, you can bulk up tyour physical memory, which would allow a much larger scene to be built. large as in memory used....which would in turn speed the whole thing up as it doesn't have to whack the hard drive.

Nope. As I warned above, you won't see memory usage increase in 32-bit apps - ever. Poser 6- will still stop at, what is it, 1.7GB, even if you 512GB of RAM installed in a 64-bit system. The hardware, drivers, OS, AND applications must be 64-bit to address 64-bit memory spaces.

i guess what i don't undrstand is why it can't use the extra memory...32 bit or not... If I try to render a scene, it uses as much virtual memory as I throw at it, as I only have 1 gig of physical ram.... at least it seems to....

That's because it's not Poser managing the virtual memory, it's the OS. The virtual memory is handled using a paging system to swap memory from RAM to the harddisk and vice versa. All in all, although VM is good when physical memory is limited, it is a very slow process. And the reasons why Windows (except for Windows 2003 Server) and applications cannot even access a full 32-bit addressing space (4GB) has been explained in another thread.

Ok here's the gig, probably you guys have better... amd 3000+ s939 abit mb, an8 etc... ati x300 pci-e graph 1 gig memory and the rest... with combos as this, I can only say: do not switch to x64.. had a hard time even finding a good 64bit driver for the 64bit processor! this was the same way back, when switching from 16bit to 32.. it needed a year or so, for every manufacturer to get up to the new system.. I'd wait 'til Longhorn 64, and poser say 7 or 8:)
I've been using Poser 6 on winXP64 for some time now, and I've not had any problems. As far as memory issues, as long as Poser 6 is up to date you shouldn't have any. When switching to WinXP64, the most important part (besides processor) is making sure you have drivers for your hardware. I suggest you stop over at www.planetamd64.com to give yourself an idea of what issues you're bound to run into if you make the switch. AMD 3700+ MSI K8Neo2 Platinum NVidia GForce 6800GT 2GB Ram
Well I have dual boot, WinXP and XP64...Poser works fine with XP64 but it works under 32 bit emulation, thus slower. Hope a 64bit patch comes before Poser 7 as a service release, at least for the firefly engine because I have seen Cinema 4D engine render under XP64 with Athlon 64 (cinebench benchmark is 64 bit) and it is truely unbeliavable... My 160$ OC'ed venice 3000+ renders %75 faster than an P4 extreme (around 900$)...I cannot imagine what an X2 can do under XP64 with a 64 bit rendering engine...
