Subject: Minimizing is this a P6 bug?

LilWolff ( ) posted Sun, 24 July 2005 at 8:01 PM ยท edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 2:17 AM

In P6 when I minimize depending on length of time when I maximize it shows part of my desktop or whatever I had opened instead of P6. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL and start all over again, it never clears up. sigh I went from just about flaky P4 (but knew most of its flakiness) to P6 so I honestly don't know if this is normal or not for the newer Posers. Gets flustrating when you are a multi tasker, I never had this problem with old P4.

This is something that has come up before. I don't know the answer, but I know there is one out there. I figured I would at least post and let you know there is an answer, and hopefully someone will point you in the right direction. Hope this helps!

Of course that helped! At least I know others are getting this. Thank you for posting your comments. :-)

Is this when / while you are rendering? Reason I ask is, I get this as well - while rendering. However this is because the render is not finished and Poser is grabbing every bit of memory it can get it's grubby lil processes on... and that means there is no memory left to update your screen when it's rendering. When the render is finished, or even if it moves on to the next box it's rendering, it will update your screen. It hasn't really crashed - even if it often says it's 'Not responding'. It's just using so much memory, and nothing is happening for long enough... that Windows thinks it has crashed... Usually happens if the render contains a ton of stuff it has to calculate. Hair, shadows, raytracing, athmosphere... they all make it seem like everything has stopped working, when in reality there is a frenzy of calculation going on in the background.

Yeah! What Silke Said. You just need to get up from in front of the PC and go take a smoke/coffee/8 Course Dinner break and come back every now and then to check up on the memory hogging monster we know and love named Poser.

Poser does seem to be more of a memory hog than I thought it was and they said Win 98 was bad rolling eyes. But unfortunately is not only while rendering, that I could maybe understand, I only have a gig of memory and running XP Pro. But sometimes I minimize to look with Yarp's P3dO for something I know I have and when I come back Poser6 is all yucky! I haven't minimized while rendering yet, I usually take a break from the computer and just let it do its thing. Thank you both for responding. This makes me nuts sometimes and even if not rendering your advise of getting up from the computer Misrael is very good. :-)

It's a Poser "feature". P4 does it to me. You can use Task Manager to switch tasks to Poser and it should come back. I have my Windows task bar set to hidden so I can access other things without minimizing.

I call it the Poser Coffee Break Feature. That's PCBF for short. Hehehe.... ;)

I run into that once and a while with Poser when I switch apps around a lot; just right click on Poser running in the app bar and select "maximize" - it always bring "all" of Poser back up for me.

R_Hatch ( ) posted Mon, 25 July 2005 at 1:04 AM

If that doesn't work, "Restore" Poser and then "Maximize" it.

JohnRickardJR ( ) posted Mon, 25 July 2005 at 6:56 AM

Yes, right click on the Poser icon on the task bar and select Restore. As long as it isn't rendering or doing something timeconsuming (cloth room/ hair room dynamics for instance), the full screen should reappear. Once in a while it doesn't, but the menu always comes back so you can save and quit then reload.

Thank you all very much for your replies, they are appreciated.:-)

This kind of redraw problem differs quite a bit according to the graphics adapter card being used. When this occurs, you can usually force the buffer to be redrawn by minimize/maxmimize Poser. You should also make sure you install the latest drivers for your card. What are your graphics card specs?

Thanks for the reminder, I checked and looks like I missed a driver update the end of June. I am using a NVIDA GeForce FX 5700.
