Subject: Looking for a black velvet texture for MCD...

Does anyone know of one?

There are free satin and velvet textures at RDNA. Material shaders, Poser 5 and 6 only. They aren't specific to any particular item; you can apply them to anything.

I suck at the material room, which is why I'm looking for ready made texture. There are so many gizmo's in the material room that I'm totally lost in there. I tried Dr. Geep's tutorial, but there is far too much on those images that I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Try out the Magic Metal/Magic Touch/etc materials. They're awesome for quickly changing clothes, and just looking at them in the Material room is a tutorial in and of itself. The velvet is good, but it looks better and smoother (imho) if you cut the granite shader. All around they're handy-dandy and look great, though. And they're reasonably priced, considering an image map texture pack is often more expensive and less versatile. Good luck!

Thanks, but I'm looking for a texture that I can apply in the Pose room from the Poses folder. The material room is way to complicated for me.

Every part of Poser look way too complicated until you are determined to tackle it. If I can learn how to use the material room, anyone can. If you find a shader that you want to use, take a shot at learning the material room, and if you get stuck, come back to this thread and I or others will walk you through it until you get it done.

The Magic Touch set is really pretty easy to use. Enter the Material Room. At the top, select your character (MCD). Go to the materials tab on the right (where poses, character, etc. are). Go to the Magic Touch tab, velvet tab, and click to select the color you want. Then, go to the little drop down menu in the material room square, choose select all, then apply to all. This will apply that velvet texture to the entire dress. The satins and sequins in that texture set are phenomenal, too! I could do a better explanation if I were at home actually looking at my Poser screens.

You don't need to know anything about shader nodes to use the free P5/P6 materials from RDNA. It's as simple as using MAT poses from the Pose folder. Just select your material zone, click the icon, and voila! ... material applied. Of course, you won't really see it until you render, but trust me, those satin, latex, suede, and velvet textures at RDNA are well worth experimenting with. The suede ones can in some cases be used to suggest velvet. My real point, Acadia, is give it a try sometime; don't let yourself be intimidated by all that tech-y Material Room stuff. It's only as complex as you want it to be. If you want to simply apply shader textures like you do image file textures, you can. :-)

Velvet is actually one of the "special" lighting option nodes in the material room. You pick your base color (true black RGB 0,0,0) and your specular color (deep grey or blue) and poser creates the velvet effect for you.

DarkestRose has a "basic black" texture for the MCD in freestuff, although I can't testify to it's velvetiness. These guys are right though, if you just want pure velvet as the texture, the material room is the best way to go, as it'll save on memory usage. If you pick up the free RuntimeDNA velvet shaders (look under Free P5 Stuff on the menu) there are 2 black velvet textures which can be applied straight from the Materials palette in the Material room. No messing about with nodes required, honest!

Karen, that basic black is perfect! I just tried it and it doesn't work. The texture doesn't apply.

I guess I'll write to DarkestRose and see if she has a file that works.

Maybe one day I'll venture back into the material room for another go, but I find it far too intimidating right now.

I've found that, with Poser 5, there are a few glitches in the Materials room. Sometimes a material doesn't load. Sometimes it doesn't appear to load. Some of it may be related to a shortage of RAM.

But the materials library in the materials room is easy to use. It's just like using a MAT pose, but you work at the level of the material zone rather than the figure. The hard part is making your own shader tree.

There's some excellent free stuff out there. Check out what Mapps has done here.

And the picture -- the figure's camouflage is all done in the Material Room, with a quite simple shader tree. Though the detailed settings took a bit of time.

That dress is exactly what I was looking for! I'm sorry AntoniaTiger, but the material room and "Shader Trees" are beyond me. I'd like to learn how to make my own textures and have them in a format that I can use in the Pose room like I do the ones I buy, but I can't figure out how to do that either. I keep hoping I'll run across a tutorial on how to do them from making the template, to generating the required files, but I've yet to find one like that.

Here's a screen capture of a fairly simple set of Material Room settings. It's the settings for the catsuit texture and bumpmap.

A MAT Pose file would contain the same information in text form, and I don't think you can avoid getting involved with the Materials Room if you want to make one.

X marks the connections between nodes. I've also marked where you put the filenames and where you can select a material. You can do a lot of fiddling with other elements, if you want to.

This the the Material Room setup for that camouflage. It's not particularly complicated, just a simple chain. The first Spots shader node does green blotches on a yellow background, and the output is the base colour of the second node (the white setting means the input isn't changed), with brown blotches added. And that goes into the third shader node which adds the small black blotches

If I want desert camouflage, I just change the colours. I prefer the Ctrl-click option on the colour boxes.

Choosing white for some colours is important. It means you don't change the colour coming from the previous node. Or maybe you want to?

Try adjusting the various numeric values in the Spots nodes. See how Spot_Size and Threshold have different effects.
