I want a box set with all six movies, all the extras, a fold out poster, a model of one of the characters, in a metal box with embossed writing and a hologram on the front. And I want an extra scene showing Jar Jar being tortured and then eaten by Jabba's big sister. Seriously, I haven't bought one of the Star Wars movies because I know that a six movie box set will eventually surface.

"Holding out for the DVD collector's edition of Star Wars Holiday Special ...." Yes, I loved those scenes where Malla the Wookie just sat there, unscripted, looking at a book for five minutes at a time. And who can forget Bea Arthur of "Maude" notoriety as the singing, dancing bartender of the Cantina? How about Carrie Fisher on LSD doing her own musical number? Hold out, but don't hold your breath, LD. As I'm sure you know, it'll never happen, so long a Lucas has any say. :-)

Holding out for the DVD collector's edition of Star Wars Holiday Special .... It'll never happen. :( Lucas has basically disowned The Holiday Special... and strangely, The Ewok Adventure movies are on DVD... hmm... Anyway, the Holiday Special aired in November, 1978, which means it was shot during the height of Star Wars excitement... and probably a few weeks or months before shooting began on Empire Strikes Back. At the time, musical variety shows were popular, so why not make on based on Star Wars? I suppose it seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe Lucas was trying some new marketing ideas. What did you miss in The Holiday Special? - Luke giving a speech via a video monitor. If you look real close, you can see the thick layers of makeup- the Holiday Special was shot right after Mark Hamill had a bad car accident and his face got torn up. So, yes, those wounds on Luke's face in Empire Strikes Back are real... though they weren't actually made by the Wampa.

  • The first appearance of Boba Fett (in the animated segment). This also led to the Kenner free action-figure offer: you could send in UPC codes and get a Boba Fett figure for free.
  • The first animated Star Wars- long before The Clone Wars "micro series" and before the Ewok and Droids series. I believe the animation was done by Ralph Bakshi, who also did the animated Lord of the Rings and first mainstream X-rated cartoon, Fritz the Cat.
  • Bea Arthur (Maude, Golden Girls) signing to get customers out of the bar. I don't know if the customers left because of the song of because of her singing. :)
  • The first appearance of the Wookie homeworld, though I don't know if the name "Kashyyyk" was actually used. It goes without saying that the scenes set on Kashyyyk in Episode III are much better than the scenes in the Holiday Special.
  • The first (and only) appearance of Chewbacca's family. Note that his father is not called "Attitichuk", which is the name used in the "official" Star Wars video games.
  • Jefferson Starship performs a musical number.
  • Carrie Fisher performs a musical number. And, yes, I managed to pick up a copy of a recording of the Holiday Special... complete with commercials! :) --John

You left out the Wookiee porn, some really bad matte paintings, the intergalactic cooking show, and the bit about Chewbacca's family grunting exclusively in Shyriiwook (their native language) for about fifteen minutes or so, with no translation. And yes, the Wookiee homeworld was named as Kashyyyk in this travesty of must-see-TV.

You left out the Wookiee porn I, um, didn't want to bring that up. ;) --John
