Subject: Hair won't cast shadow

Poser 6, IBL lighting, MAC OSX. For some reason the hair isn't casting a shadow onto the figure. I have tried adding an AO node to the skin, but no go. Anyone have an idea? Thanks.

IBL lights are set with shadows off by default - you need to turn them on in the light's properties

I did. I also tried AO lighting. Also, why are there 4 lights, but on the IBL is "check" on in the properties. The sun, light 1, light 3 are "checked" off. Not to get off topic, but also was wondering about it. Thanks.

IBL lighting only uses 1 light, again by default - you can add in more, if you want. As for why shadows aren't being cast, I'm not sure.

If IBL lighting is used in the default light preset, it creates 4 lights, but only one is turned on.

Does the hair have cast shadows enabled in its' properties?

I noticed that if you load a IBL from the library its by default with shadows disabled and, even if you enable the shadows, don't cast them: perhaps it's one of Poser bugs. Did you use a IBL loaded from library?

Yes, it was loaded from the library. I turned shadows on, and there are shadow everywhere except where the hair should be creating them again the figure. Strange.

I usually turn off cast shadow for hair because when I don't, I often end up with ugly black patches instead of subtle shadows... especially at the neck area. To me a shadow should be darker, but still allow you to see the shape of what is there. I never get that when I have hair casting shadows....just plain opaque ugly black voids.

It mentions "Shadowcam". Where is Poser 6 is this?

In the parameter dials, in the camera part.

I can't find the ShadowCam anywhere?

The ShadowCam is not an object that you can select. It can only be selected from the parameter dials window.

If you look in the cameras part of the parameter dials window, all the shadow cameras are at the bottom of that part.

I must be bone stupid. I selected the main camera, and the properties tab, and there are no dials for shadow. Can you give a 123 step please. Thanks. Sorry for the thick headedness.

Hopefully this pic shows how to access the shadowcams. Select the one that corresponds to the light that should be casting a shadow, then it will be available in the parameters pallette.

I notice, that using IBL, or AO, those options are not available.

Do you have ray-tracing enabled in your render settings? I just did a test using an IBL light and shadows only showed up properly when ray-tracing was enabled in the render settings and ray-traced shadows was enabled on the IBL light.
