Hey! I had a freind who've I've gotten into V3 lately ask me..."Why do people buy these textures and morphs? Why do they buy the figures?"....I told her for me it's fun, and a hobby. I like to make "pretty" pictures because it's just fun and it gives me pride in something i can actually do well. But then I got to thinking about all the things a third party could be thinking..."Are they that lonely that they have to buy virtual girlfriends?"...So, why do you buy the textures, the hair, the faces, the clothes? I know not everybody who buys these things does renders for commercial use or a website...so why? :D I just thought it'd be fun to hear some diverse reasons for their use of V3/Poser/human figures and accessories. I'm pretty boring in that I love digital art ..and was so glad when a friend offered to take a Poser class and I was able to learn. I was in awe and still am at the talent of digital artists and am glad to be a learning part of it. I like all kinds of figures/morphs etc....but I tend to like the gothicy ones best but thats funny cause I ain't really a gothicy person lol.... plus...it gives me an excuse to get away from the kids. LOL

I like art, I like Poser. I buy things because I haven't learned how to make my own. Once I'm able to make my own textures for clothing though, I'll be making many of my own textures. To me art is a hobby... so is Poser. Why does anyone buy anything for their hobbies? Model cars, trains, stained glass, cross stitch? It's a way to spend some enjoyable time by myself.

I've always loved the idea of creating something, but i am genetically impaired (!) with regard to standard art forms - Poser simply gave me the possibility to express myself, however simple my images may be. Grim

Because it's great fun, it has several practical uses, I like to see how my fellow merchants work and anyhow, you can never have too much stuff. As for lonely, far from it. My real life, real live Good Lady is just as into the whole Poser deal as me.

I'm a professional oil painter, and I felt I was missing something by not knowing anything about digital art. I feel like Poser has connected me with the art of the future, and I love being able to express myself in that medium. The "figures and morphs and textures" are my 3D oil paints....

Cindy, have you created anything in Poser, then printed it out and recreated it in Oils? I've been wanting to try that myself.

I use poser and other, to help bring up a skill, and for enjoyment. Hobby with Projects. :-)

I buy things that come from someone else's imagination to help me create with mine...does that make sense? Every being is unique in the way they think, behave and create so it's interesting some of the awesome things I have seen here. Things that I love but would never have thought of myself.......besides that it's just plain fun ;)

I have a grand vision in mind, big budget stuff that could never be pulled off by yours truly in the real world - helicopters exploding while engaging intergalactic whales being run over by 18-wheelers, that sort of thing. Coming from a musician's perspective, I am floored by the artistic skill of marketplace vendors - I nearly envy photoshop gurus - and I am constantly in awe of the technical wizards who push Poser's abilities closer and closer to "pro" level applications. Although I have no family of my own I am never lonely because my friends, as it turns out, are my best source of inspiration.

I loved drawing people since the age of six.And I allways loved Comic books.So I begann drawing comic stories myself.Later on my works became more and more erotic.I improved my technics simulating lights and shadows to get a vivid effect.Although most people were impressed I wasn't satisfied.For me this vivid effect got lost somehow.I just saw lines instead.So for for me the next step into 3D was only a logical process.

I think as hobbyist, we just love the fun of it all. A professional might likely be motivated by income and purchase as an investment. I liken Poser to my daughters dolls and/or action figures. She gets a doll but the real fun is in dressing them up in different clothes and accessories. Props are like the additional stuff she collects to create an environment for her dolls. A merchant here would be like the person who goes to the craft store and buys all the stuff to MAKE the clothes,props,etc. For me,I'm actually more of a software technician than an artist (most of my "Art"really sux in comparison to others here),But I like to know how to achieve certain effects and techniques. I like to figure out how stuff works. I might not be able to do a practical application of a technique, but I can usually help someone else to achieve a task. Software fascinates me. I'm more like the guy at the craft store showing you where stuff is...lol Cool thread Tom

Having imaginary characters and places actually visualised is a great thing... a thing that has become possible thru the use of Poser. Images such as this latest illustration of a character pictured above.

Yeah that's how I started off, heavily into roleplaying games and wanteds to bring the characters to life. Don't do the RPG stuff much now but posering keeps on going when i get the time. Jack

"Take me home tonight"; "make me yours"; and so on. Shudders, and not in a good way Although the virtual girlfriend market is a big one, I don't think many of them will be visiting this thread; and fewer still will be willing to admit to it. :) But as I said somewhere else, maybe if more of us were happy playing with virtual dolls, the world might be a better place.

I do web design, illustration, and book covers using the models and sometimes other props as a base. I can draw, but I like to use the figures as a starting point. Definitely not a virtual girlfriend. Nor a digital boyfriend, I mean, who wants a boyfriend with a detachable penis? ;-P bonni

I play various roleplaying games and i like the fact,that i can illustrate my characters or the characters from my friends.My darling and i have a few websites with roleplaying as theme and we do images for these sites,make avatars for our users and now we do also a little bit of commercial stuff with Poser.And another reason,i cannot draw people and animals very good.Technical stuff or so is not a problem but nature gives me the creeps.gg

I sometimes wonder if, had things at school gne a little differently, I could have been better able to get from imagination to paper with a pencil. I take photographs, have done for years, but there still has to be something real. For me, Poser is something like a pencil. But have I spent too much on models and textures? Maybe. And how much of my images are really from me? I'm not sure.

I've never once viewed the base characters as having any spark. Add a texture, and you can see a little bit of them. Add some morphs, change some characteristics, you see some more. Move their body, change their position, there's a little more. Whether or not you add clothing at this point is your choice lol. It's not about wanting to see nekkid folks on my screen. If I wanted to see a naked man on my screen, I'd take a picture of my husband in the shower, LOL. Then again, a lot of us who pour our hearts into our art don't really look at nude figures as something that's automatically sexual, so I think a lot of the "stigma" comes from those who can't look past the sexuality of a nude image. Even if it will eventually be clothed ;)

Not that it's not secure (I get alerts when I hit spyware encrusted pages), but we do have to make sure that no one else gets spyware through clicking a link from here. And I hope that made sense to you, because I'm runnin' on fumes, LOL.

I am, in fact, so lonely that I need to create virtual girlfriends. It never works out though. Yeah, initially they are thankful that I created them, but they'll run off with the first good-looking M3 character they see. So I punish them all by releasing a few monsters to chase after them.

but every once in awhile, I go to a party, get drunk, and for the life of me, can't remember where I put it

I would probably get beat up playing with these dolls :P Besides, as realistic as renders are becoming, I mean,,,what the hell..print one out on photo paper and put her in your wallet. People that don't use Poser just don't understand us, huh? I mean let's be honest..how many of you have ever perhaps in the wee hours made V3 or M3..or perhaps V3 plus M3 do some umm let's say less than proper posing? :P

15 years as a professional artist, I've done a little of everything from Art Direction, Set Design, Logos, Newsletters, Brochures, Billboards, Tshirts, Animations, TV Graphic packages, Box design, etc.. I have awards and ribbons sitting on my shelf, collected over years, and to me, the final frontier, the ultimate challenge, is 3D. I remember Wavefront back in 1990, it was intimidating. But as the years pasted, Poser grew. I jumped in around 2000. I love how Poser makes 3D easy, cheap, and interesting. My main goal is to learn and keep intouch with where things are going. I love making things and learning new tricks things. :D

Really though, I have been a long fan of Poser. I still even have my Fractal Design Poser 2 CD :) I remember when I first bought it too, talk about a confusing manual L But once I messed with those dials and the model..of course, I was hooked for life. So call it what you like "virtual girlfriend" or whatever. It is good company to have around, and I guess in some ways it is like a woman..coz I still have never completely figured it out. I guess too if I would have taken the time to learn it more, maybe now I would be creating my own stuff instead of still buying it all, but sometimes it makes me so frustrated, I have to "break up with it" for awhile :P

My first virtual girlfriend was named Eliza. She resided on an IBM 370 at university. Type in certain key words, and she'd give back certain stock replies. No pictures, though. Only green letters on a Bragen CRT screen -- an old type of dumb monitor.

It's something to pass the time with until my fembot is completed.

I showed my dinosaur models to one of my friends kids a little while back. The kids drooled over the fact that you can have dinosaurs running around at your command. The parents just said "Why do you do that"? It stunned me a little. I never heard that before. I simply replied "Because I can". Some adults just don't get the magic of creating and bringing something to life. They think music just comes from a box and SPFX just happen automatically from a computer.

I agree, ScottA..guess thats why they make those pre-fab / plug and play PCs :) Sometimes Poser is a real pain in the ***, but when it pays off..it's pricelss

I can draw, paint, and sculpt. Even when I was a young man, and would do a scratchboard drawing of a fantasy subject, like King Kong, even THEN the squares said "Why do you do that?" Then, as it got better, you could actually use the models in a finished work of art. I like the fact that you can use photo data of actual people on a CGI figure. The amount of detail I can get in a Poser figure with that method, very quickly, would take a long time to do in an oil painting, if ever. Also I can have fun with lighting without having to set up bulky, awkward and expensive lighting equipment. What is the difference between Poser and traditional art methods? "Quicker, easier, more seductive." -Yoda. Someday, I will try copying a Poser picture as an actual oil painting on canvas, to see if it works, and because I dont know if it has been done yet. Ive been threatening to do this for years.

Also, finding good human artist models is a pain, and they don't work for free, usually.

The most expensive and best looking Poser figures are still a lot cheaper than those you can buy for other apps .Go to Turbo squid and compare.
