I have a close friend who has a Nikon D70. My next purchase is, was going to be a Canon 20D. The issue is we want to share and swap lens, so one of us must give. Any thoughts on a heads up comparison between the two? And remember cost is not an issue at this point..

It looks like you'd have to be the one who gives. The Nikon is a terrific camera from all the reviews I've read and photos I've seen. Still, if I were starting fresh and didn't have a friend with a D70, I'd go with the Canon. =]

Don't ask me! I have a Canon and wouldn't have it any other way. By the way, Pop Photo ran an article on the crop factor and found that the 20D actually outperformed either the 1Ds Mark II or the 1D Mark II in telephoto clarity. It doesn't get better than that!

Well, take a browse through my gallery cuz I got the Canon. And I'm not saying that like i'm some photographic god, but that camera takes a mean photo.

I think a camera is a personal choice! You need to hold it it in you hands, checkout the button, how its setup ... see what FEELS right, see which one clicks (LOL)to make the right decision! The Nikon D70 is a great cam...but is it the RIGHT one for you? Maybe it is, but you're sort of limiting yourself already it seems to me. The whole idea about Sharing lenses seems to point to the Nikon. This may work out and it may not! There are going to be times when you both may want to use the same lens...then what? If money WAS...NO OBJECT...you could then buy both cameras and have the best of both worlds! Just some food for thought! L8r! Joe

Great answer! I chose the Canon because I found it easiest to use and "understood" it better. The little points in the viewfinder just seemed more logical than a few circles.

I went through all this a few weeks ago. It took me 4 weeks to decide, read just about every review etc. Went to friends who has Canon and then another who has Nikon. Asked here in the Forum etc. Well ended up with Canon. I think the Canon has more choice of Lens. Just my pennies worth. Oh and Yes, Luv the the Canon. Steve

I was faced with a similar decision not too awful long ago! I wanted the Canon 20D, it didn't matter to me because I had no lenses that were compatible to start with. The 20D is an 8 megapixel and the D70 is a 6.3 megapixel. I went with the Nikon D70 because I was buying the kit, and the lens that comes with the kit is far superior to the lens that comes with 20D as a kit. I love my D70 and wouldn't trade it for the world, but to be politically correct I am thinking on purchasing a 20D, but not with that kit lens. I will pay a few hundred more and get the upgrade. The kit lens is the same one they give you with the Digital Rebel kit and may have a street value of $50 or $70. While the lens that you get with the Nikon is a quality piece of glass that is worth $300 maybe more (It is ED glass). The Nikon Canon debate is one that will probably continue forever. It is like the debate between Ford and Chevrolet. Both are awesome, but everyone has an opinion about which is better. Go try them out! Brenda :)

bought the canon 20d.. in april as a birthday present to my self.. and 3 lens..:) mind you worked extra hours to cover the cost... love the camera.. but if money was no object...ermmmm ((l'd buy a holiday in paradise to escape this damn awful summer we,ve had England..))) no seriously think your self plus friend should go to a store together try them both out toss a coin...head s it a canon tail a nikon...:)...))) rambling

I've had the 20D since it came out, and have had NO problems with it. A major problem with a couple cards when I first got it, but it turned out to be the cards, not the camera. I went with the Canon, as I already had the 35mm rebel with a couple lens' and wanted to be able to make use of them and not have to buy any more. I could go on all day about the absolute joy that camera has given me, and not one second of regret about the cost. (Steep as it was!) but it is taking me from recreational snap shot taker, to beginning to persue a professional career now as a photographer. (Now I need a new lens or three, a new light set-up, etc. sigh Never ending process is it!) Can't give you the comparison on anything, but can only give my opinion. I love it! I want to thank you all for taking your time to help me think about this choice. What I meant was cost was not an issue between the two choices. I used the his D70 quite a bit and tested the canon 20D. It's kind of a feel thing that I like canon better. Besides I won't have to buy new speedlites. Thanks again for all your input Canon 20D it is. And if I had the money and no store to run I'd get the hell out of New York for the rest of the summer. It has been torturous:{

If money was no object I'd get something which had at least 12 or more Megapixels, preferably 16 Megapixels, either a Nikon or a Canon. Having said that the Eos 350D seems to produce nice sharp images and Fuji have just released a 9 Megapixel 'bridge' type camera with a very good zoom and macro facility. It sells for less than the Eos 350D, but only slightly... Personally I hate carrying gear and would shy away from anything of a 'medium' format size, so I like the new generation of 35mm sized digital cameras, or smaller.
