Ive posted a side-by-side render of our Halfling Village Guardhouse (which is for sale in our Renderosity store) rendered with two differing resolution texture maps. We are looking for feedback on a simple question: Does high rez always look better? I look forward to your feedback (and yes, we are looking to release a higher resolution graphics pack :-)). Hi chikako, I think "A" looks better ... It seems to have more detail and a little less blur on the rocks. I HOPE thats the higher res version. LOL... Clint

B looks better. I think A shows too much jpg compression in the texture. For all practical purposes they are indistinguishable - we would need to see close-ups.

It's hard to tell if the difference is due to more detail or to less on A. I actually like B better:) However, higher resolution options are a definite yes, since placing something interesting in inside the set and zooming in a bit would absolutely show artifacts if the texture were too small for the zoom. There are a great many otherwise nice models that just don't pass muster to me bacause their own promo shots highlight the weakness in texture. eric

The fencing looks better in B, yet the stone is lovely and sharp in A. A looks like B with a sharpen filter run over it :) I prefer B.

ooo, i much prefer "B"... i saved the image to my desktop and applied a variety of sharpening filters in Photoshop on the "B", and could easily replicate the look of "A"... i then tried softening up "A" to look more like "B" and while it is do-able, it takes a little more effort to not over-soften and to blend it... just my 2 cents... :))

It depends, first thing I almost always do when I make a purchase is to reduce the oversized textures that most merchants put out. This is a background item and would never be the main focus of any picture I would do, it would be there to create a mood or time period. As such, I'd reduce the textures if you went with A.

Farside...if only everyone thought like you :P ..chances are this will be rendered close up..you'll have pics of someone standing by the doorway rendered at 2500x with a focal of 100mm...or a close up of someone in one of the windows.. IMO you can never make textures big enough..the end user can always scale down..but they can't go the otherway. make 'em big Cheers Stefan B looks better btw

High resolution textures only really look better in larger rendered scene. If your rendering size is much larger then the texture sizes you do use, it will show. But in smaller renderings it will not show that much at all.

Chikako I was looking at the results of this test,in your gallery post you say : "Monday is here and the answer is: "A" is the high rez one at 4096x4096. Thanks for the feedback everyone! The original texture was "B" and it was upscaled " what's the point in upscaling the texture?..'A' maybe larger in scale but it is by no means better in quality since it's just 'B' made larger. you need to make the original texture large..(& you should never upscale a texture as has already been pointed out) btw,you have some nice models in your gallery. Upscaling isn't high res at all. To really have high res the original texture needs to be size 4096x4096. The low res texture then is a scaled down from the high res one. You don't scale up low res to get high res, that's not high res at all, still low res. A scaled up low res texture will still look bad in a high res image. If you would sell a scaled up low res texture as high res texture you would actually be deceiving your customers. Try rendering a really large render with this scaled up so called high res texture and you will see the flaw in this practise.
