Ok, ok!! I'm getting the hang out of it, slowly but surely! What an amazing toy!! I'm totally in love with that cam!!! I was worried about having some crappy lenses but man, I take that back!! They might be at the bottom of the Canon range, they still do a great job to me!! I'm totally amazed at the image quality!!! It's SO smooth!! No grain whatsoever and sharp enough for my taste after all!!! Fabulous!! So anyway, here's my first "valuable" try!! Not a fascinating shot in itself since the subject is boring and all but I still love the shot cos of the lighting and the smoothness of the image!! And cos it's my first uploadable Canon 20D image!! Man, I'm proud! :D Ur opinions and advice are more than welcome guys!! :) And plz, be honest, I can take it!!! ;)

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sun, 11 September 2005 at 2:01 PM

And oops, the image is tilted!! Crap!! Didn't notice that!! Oh well!! It's just a first, never mind the details!! LOL!

Actually, very easy so far I must say Joe!! I think the 'lil Sony is in for a LONG sleep!! O_o And I don't know where u see my reflection in the glass Andreas!! O_o That black thingie is the cam I think!! ;)

LostPatrol ( ) posted Sun, 11 September 2005 at 4:08 PM

I think #1 is superb, it might be "Crap" but its certailly not crap (does that make sence lol) very nice DOF too For me #7 looks a little underexposed. Anyway I am impressed with that lens. Looks like it produces good results from what I can see. As mentioned in your other post, the Canon 100mm macro is excellent on the 1.6x censors as it the Sigma 105mm macro, and produce very good contrast, colour and DOF.

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sun, 11 September 2005 at 4:15 PM

Actually, #7 is perfectly exposed considering the conditions! If I had increased the exposure by 1 stop, the highlights would have been burnt out! I used the flash on this one cos it was backlit! ;)

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Sun, 11 September 2005 at 4:17 PM

Oh and yes, the lenses I had with the package are good indeed, considering their price!! I'm really impressed! :) And happy!! :D yES!!

Hello Pascale ! Congratulations for your new cam ! I'm so sure you will (continue to) share such beautiful images. Regarding the two uploads, they clearly demonstrate the power of your new tool, but I'm not so fond of still life subjects (although... see my upload later today...)... I really prefer your fantastic street portraits and I do hope you will continue with this excellent series... the new telelens should help you a lot ! zibous ! :~)

Hehe ... so you've been to fast for me. Right now i'm selling mine. I'm so happy for ya that you finally got her! Looking forward a lot to what a true artist like you will do with such a great tool. Have tons of fun with her Pascale!! :-) Tom

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 9:01 AM

I use the 17-55mm and the 90-300mm lenses by Canon TM! :) Kim, I cross fingers for u to be right on this one! ;) Michel, these are just trial shots! And that gum wrapper was there and very handy for my 'lil experiments! ;) Thx Tom. I'm already having lots of fun with it!! I even dream about it!!! How pathetic!! I'm starting a long term love story here, I can tell! :D

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 9:02 AM

Oh and Tom, If I may ask, why are u selling ur 20D?? O_o

Raven_427 ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 9:45 AM

A "long term love story"? Oh, that sounds really serious. But don't worry about dreaming of your cam .. guess we all have our minor problems lol Oooops ... but you don't get me wrong, do you? :-) Why am i selling mine? I don't like cams without this ... how is it called in english? You can turn the cam by 90 and have a second trigger plus some more buttons to conveniently shoot that way? For the 20D there's this battery grip (BG-E2) having this feature. I like the much improved handling a lot - especially with heavy lenses such as the 85 1.2. But right with those, there's a big problem with the power-connection between grip (that contains the batteries) and cam .. sometimes the cam believes that the batteries are empty which they in fact are not. Taking them out and reinserting them helps for a short time .. but that's so annoying. Imagine reinserting your batteries after 3 - 5 shots .. over and over again. To emphasize this: that will NOT happen when shooting in a normal way without moving all to fast or when shooting with "normal" lenses. But having the cam vertically or upside down, pointing from the bottom upwards (what i do a lot when shooting kids) and having the 85 1.2 on it (to avoid having to use flashlights), it happens all the time. Also, while working on a tripod, it's very hard to point the cam to one special point when she moves a little bit after releasing her .. like falling down into the grip. Only a millimeter or two, but enough to make composition difficult. The only option is to remove that grip everytime when a tripod comes into play. Annoying once again, isn't it? There are some more minor points, e.g. with shooting birds in flight when the AF Servo is less than perfect (may also be my fault) and times, when 5 fps just aren't enough. But these are really minor to that annoyance above. So i've decided to get me a 1 D Mark II N. Will have to wait some months ... but i guess she's well worth some waiting. I believe all those critique on the 20D doesn't apply to your kind of photography so i'm very sure, this will be a long term love story. So i'm still happy for ya! Have a great time with that Cam Pascale .. can't wait to see your first serious images done with her! Tom

LostPatrol ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 10:22 AM

Tom I'm not going to ant try to change your mind of anything, but would like to say that I have the 10D with the vertical grip, and have never had the problems that you have mentioned (maybe your grip is faulty!?) I agree the servo isnt perfect and the 1 series is the way to go for pure performance, I have use the 1D MK II (very impressive) and the body style does eliminate most is the issues that you have mentioned. Of course the 40 odd focus points on the 1D will greatly help the servo. I think using servo on a camera with fewer focus points is harder to get right also.

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 10:30 AM

Oooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! Mmmmmh!! I've heard of that battery grip thingie but I didn't really get what's the use for it to be honest!? O_o Anyway, I hope u'll get that 1D Mark soon dear!! I know how it's like to wait for the cam of ur dreams! ;)

Raven_427 ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 10:36 AM

Hi! You're right, the 10D does not have this problems, the 300D doesn't too (had the 300D with grip before .. no prob at all). It seems to be an issue with all 20Ds / grips from the early series .. dunno if they've fixed it until today. Perhaps they've made some errors with designing that grip .. some people told me it feels a lot cheaper than the one for the 10D (which i haven't had in my hands for now). I've had Cam and Grip sent to Canon. They have adjusted something and it has been better afterwards - but still it happens. They right now also do exchange the older grips free of charge .. but you will know that loss of trust? "It failed me once, when will it fail me again?". Also, you're perfectly right about that focus-points. Experienced users will achieve great results with the 20Ds 9 AF-points but for me .. of course i have to admit a lot of error is on my side but .. sigh

Raven_427 ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 10:44 AM

Thanks Pascale my dear. I'll copy your words and send them to Canon :-) The use .. ? Hmmm .. shooting horizontically is easy .. but how do you do it vertically? Having your right arm upwards? Not convenient at all and for a longer time - impossible. With that grip, you can still hold the cam in they way u're used to hold her. Even if held horizontical, the cam does fit a lot better into my hands .. without, that small finger of mine keeps slipping from the cam .. i'm sure this is no point of any importance to you! :-) Hope this answers your question?

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 11:01 AM

Mmmmmh! I didn't find it difficult to shoot holding the cam vertically so far. Didn't change much to me. the problem that I have though, horizontaly or vertically is the weight of the cam! I find it pretty heavy I must say! A tripod or monopod is a must for me. I still can 't picture how that grip works though! O_o scratching head

Raven_427 ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 11:17 AM

Does this image help in understanding? http://img.zol.com.cn/article/3/117/liWa1FusIuqxk.jpg Weight? Oh yes ... she's no light-weight but in comparison to other cams .. g. But using a monopod seems to always be a fine idea.

tibet2004uk ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 11:26 AM

Mmmmmh!! Ok, I see how it looks like now but I don't see how it makes the vertical handling easier!! But hey, I guess it's just a question of personal taste!! Maybe I should try it and see how it feels! Thx for the link Tom! :)

Nameless_Wildness ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 12:49 PM

Simon, yeah, the ID Mk ii has indeed a 45 point AF area...but can only choose 13 points at any one time out of the 45 to focus. Pascale, the 20D will serve you well in your type of photography but is well capable in producing stunning shots in all aspects in photography! Enjoy it, I know ya do :)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 2:17 PM

Man, I must be out of the loop. This is the first I've heard that you actually did get a new toy! :) Congrats Pascalou, that is a great cam and I know it will treat you well. Great starter images here, especially that first. Enjoy in good health. Why not try taking some more photos of your tats with this one? ;oP Extra smooth!! :)

LostPatrol ( ) posted Mon, 12 September 2005 at 4:38 PM

Pascale, I think you are right about being able to use the cam fine with no bother on portrait style. If you have never used a vertical grip you will most likely never have a problem, its a funny thing, once you have used one, you miss it like hell if you havent got one. I think the 20D is a little lighter than the 10D, so I understand where you are coming from, it can take some getting used to the weight especially with a big lens on it. Think of poor Jim with that 1D MK II and a huge lens, he must work out lol Jim I have only ever used a 1D II in the studio so never really needed to worry about all the focus points, still 13 is better than the 7 I have, I get a few misses Oops! Manly shoot landscape macro and studio so not a big issue. Tom hope you dont have to wait too long for your 1D MK IIn, sure it will be worth the wait anyway. Anyway veering off topic so I will shut up now lol Simon

Awwwwww! Thx u Kortalouche darling! U're making me blush! :D And yes Simon, I guess it's a question of habit indeed cos I shoot a lot in vertical and I didn't find it difficult at all with the 20D. As for the weight, I better go back to the gym to make those arms a 'lil stronger! ;)

You will do fantastic work with this new tool of yours Pascale. I have the Nikon D70 and I am very happy with it, but it does not make me want a 20D any less. Tom I think you need to take your camera back to the place where you purchased it, it sounds like you have a defective model or part. Everyone that I know that has the 20D raves about it. If your cam is under a year old it should be covered under warranty and this does sound like a warranty problem. Brenda :)
