Subject: Missing Lights, "No Figure"...Possible Corrupt File? Please Help :)

I'm using Poser 6, Aiko 3 and had a file I've been working on for a few days, but today when I saved it and went to shut down Poser, it asked again did I want to save, so I clicked 'yes' and Poser shut down...Well when I went to re-open the file it's now missing the lights and shows a 'no figure' display. Even though the character is visible in the DaVinci pose, I'm unable to select or click anything. Needless to say I'm at my wits end. Any assistance that can help me recover the file is greatly appreciated. Here's a screen cap of what I'm getting:

it happens because you have been working on a scene for too long and have not made any sacrifices to the poser gods. i get it sometimes. the easiest way is usually just to start again.

LOL:) You're probably right about the Poser gods, but here's the thing. I've since rebuilt the scene from scratch, but when I go to reopen the file I get the same problem. The screen capture is from my 4th attempt from scratch :(

have you tried saving the scene as a different file name in a different folder maybe?

I've got dozens of these. Wish I knew the fix. Sorry.

An idea Let's start a screenshot crash party bonanza.... Maybe someone will take notice. Po'ed minds want to know

DarkSkills ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2005 at 11:54 PM

Those screenshots are exactly what I'm getting. AAARGH! This is frustrating. Everything functions fine until I go to save the scene and reload it, then 'poof' no more scene. I've tried saving it under a different name in a different folder, but still no success.

I've noticed, that you get these corrupted pz3 files when having lots of unconnected nodes in the material room! Check all materials for all elements in your scene and either delete or connect those unconnected nodes before saving! I haven't found a way to "repair" the corrupt pz3. Martin

Just aking a stab in the dark since i haven't experienced this yet..... Is it because you have Meshes turned on in the view? Just it looks like this is common. Also does it happen after a certain point everytime you rebuild the scene Darkskills? Maybe there is an error in a certain prop/figure you are using?

Only your mind limits yourImagination. Let it free.

This only happens in P6 this way. And it seems to be a random thing...you can resave a file 30 times without it happenning. In P5, it required an ugly blackout reboot crash to trash a scene like this. Saving to different names: it trashes the file you renamed it from as well as the new named file. Then as you reopen the older named files, it trashes each one (one by one) backwards. I've gone through 6 like this. I shut off the .pmd file option and reduced these considerably though, could just be a coincidence. "Is it because you have Meshes turned on in the view?"...no. These were in either full preview (skree3D) or document style. They either come back as dead wireframe (above) or even worse...multicolored forms with no wireframe at all... " I've noticed, that you get these corrupted pz3 files when having lots of unconnected nodes in the material room"...should not be an issue as P5 handled this fine. I usually have a lot of connected nodes as I use shaders on everything.

I posted this same message in the linked thread. Can someone figure a solution?:: Something similar happens to me with P6 SR1, but it's not after saving; it's after a render. After about an hour or so working in a scene--without adding or switching anything--P6 will begin to slow substantially. After that amount of time, I will have done several test renders. Then, all of a sudden, I do another test render, come back to the preview window, and almost everything is gone! Some of the scene props will still be there and maybe a hair prop, but everything else is gone. The characters are still listed in the drop-down but they are not there. Without saving, I check the file sizes of the pz3 and pmd. What used to be 7 or 8 meg files are now about a half meg in size. (I had done several saves before this happened.) Apparantly, P6 was saving the files while it was destroying them. NOTE: Each time the scenes were small. Two lightly injected mil characters and a few scene props. I've learned not to do anything larger in P6. It happened three times to me. I've had to completely re-do everything. I've never had this happen in P6 before SR1. Neither has it happened in P5, P4, or P4 with ProPack. I have a dual-pentium zeon, 1 gig o' ram, 350 gig HD machine. --------------------------- Since that time, another anomoly has cropped up... Expression settings stop working. The dials are there with their respective numbers, but the expression on the character is blank. The face shape morphs still work. Also, switching to the left, right or front cameras sometimes zeros the character. All the work I'd done posing is gone. All this in P6 SR1. ============================= Sept 14 update: In that thread, Dizzi suggested disabling PMDs. I tried it and it seemed to work with the corrupt files. I haven't tested it very thoroughly though--I'm a little gun shy of P6 right now. P4/ProPack is still the only version of Poser I can count on to work properly.

<< " I've noticed, that you get these corrupted pz3 files when having lots of unconnected nodes in the material room"...should not be an issue as P5 handled this fine. I usually have a lot of connected nodes as I use shaders on everything. >> I was talking about UNconnected nodes! Those seem to cause a Problem with Poser 6. Not just unconnected image maps, but some of the other nodes. I did notice that after loading an item created for Poser 6 and the applying a MAT pose that was created for Poser 4 and did not contain any shader tree info. It did leave many UNconnected nodes. When saving this scene as a pz3 I got a corrupted file. If I did delete all the UNconnected nodes prior to saving the file was fine! Martin

msg> Got it loud and clear. My point was I'm crashing with a ton of connected shader trees. So,,,that cannot be it. I suspect the new .pmd filing. Though I have not a shred of proof. Words are cheap...I'm sure the SR2 will not be.

kalon ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2005 at 9:41 PM

Um... I had this problem with P4. I still have a 98 meg file that opens with no figures, though both are listed in the drop down, and another that looks very much like the second picture posted, items tossed about- characters returned to the default position, nothing is selectable and nothing is poseable. I hope someone figures it out, cuz you know, of course, that was some of my best work ;-)

Richardson... seems like I did read your last comment in post 10 wrong :-) You are probably right about .pmd files being responsible. They seem to be causing lots of trouble for lots of people.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one w/ the problem. Once it happens, the only thing I've found to keep it from happening again is a reboot. Closing and restarting Poser does not fix it.

DarkSkills ( ) posted Fri, 16 September 2005 at 7:49 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all with no success and now it's gotten to the point I can't save anything (in Poser that is) without it being somehow being corrupted, as in opening with no lights and missing figure. Even older files that have never had any problem are being corrupted if I open them and try to save them. Maybe a system restore will do the trick?

Stay Focused.

Do you have any temporary files in the Poser directory?

should save multiple copies as you go. You know, different versions. Then you can go back to a previous one.

originalkitten ( ) posted Sun, 18 September 2005 at 6:42 PM

I did this...i had saved 3 copies.....and it corrupted each one

I mean as you are creating, you should always save backups, like lady1.pz3. lady2.pz3
