Subject: Poser 6 texture screw-ups (Sharkey wings, Kozaburo wave hair)

Can anyone tell me why this happens? Both of these products rendered fine in Poser 4. I spent all night trying to tweak with the textures for Sharkeys Ultimate Wings in Poser 6, feather by feather, and got nowhere. Groups of feathers are dead black for no reason. Kozaburo wave hair is the only one of his products I have trouble with - so far. (not as tragic, since it is free)

Guessing...Check on "remove backfacing polys" in renderoptions.

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 22 September 2005 at 6:45 PM

Go to the respective surfaces in the material room and check "forward normals".

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 22 September 2005 at 6:47 PM

Have you tried the Normals_Forward option in the Material Room yet?

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 22 September 2005 at 6:55 PM

"Normals_Forward" is the correct name, right. Thanks, L_D.

Didn't mean to tread on your toes, stewer. I'd done a test-render with the Wave Hair first, and neglected to refresh the webpage to see if anyone had responded in the last five minutes.

I checked both Normals_Forward and "remove backfacing polys" and it fixed the hair, but not the wings. Hmmm. Thanks everybody for the fast response.

the right wing has reversed or inward facing polygons on the interior side of the wing (corresponding to the interior wing material)

I used PolyTrans to load in the .OBJ file and reverse the manually (very easy to do) and then re-saved the object again.

one thing to remember is that you must keep the obj groups. otherwise the bone setup will no longer work! this is why you are seeing really dark right wing, if you swing the camera around to the back, the right wing will look as if its lit like the left wing in you image above, and the left wing will look like the right wing in your image above! this is because the polygons are facing the wrong way, and so are showing the lighting on the opposite side to what you should actaully see.

How strange. Okay. Also, if you'll notice, the left wing has the same problem -in reverse! I never heard of PolyTrans, but I'll try looking it up.

Is there a way to fix the geometry of the wave hair within Wings3D? Recently, I had the same problem. I knew the solution but I wanted to try and analyse the cause, but in Wings3D there didn't show up any obvious geometry errors. Anyway, I didn't spend much time with it but maybe someone has tried and solved this matter already. (Maybe the grandmaster himself?)

the left wing has this problem because both the left and right wing use the same OBJ file, so fixing the object fixed both wings

I don't know, but here's how you do it in Ultimate Unwrap 3D:

Select All (CTRL-A)
3D Tools menu --> Modifiers --> Expand --> Amount (0.0001)

Separates the faces just enough to prevent the double-sided render issues in Poser.
