Subject: Distributing Material Presets for Standard figures?

nysalor ( ) posted Mon, 26 September 2005 at 10:44 PM · edited Thu, 24 October 2024 at 12:03 AM

Hi folks

(I originally posted this to the DAZ DS forum. Apologies for the crosspost, but it has some particular Renderosity content).

As a longtime PP4 user, I'm getting serious about DS in a big way. I have a vision, though, of ten thousand DS newbies like myself all sitting down with their first V3s, M3s, etc., and with their favourite texture sets, all trying to sort out the different gloss/spec/render type settings to bring out the best or even just eliminate the wash. :)

I understand that DS can save Material presets as scripts/partial files? Are there any issues about distributing these files? What about settings for things like DAZ texture sets - say if someone created a material setting to show the new Darya V3 texture to best advantage, could it be distributed? (The script doesn't save the actual textures, right, just the settings and pointers, so you'd have to possess Darya to use the setting?)

While I assume that new figures and textures will be optimised if you load them into DS (yes?), most of us have fond gigabytes of figures etc that all need tweaking into DS.

The final question is where would we share them? Through the DAZ site? Renderosity, 3DCommune etc? Renderosity has started a DS Gallery and Forum, but does not yet have a freebies area.

Cheers

John

It should be okay to redistribute material files. You can share freebies at more than one place, for daz studio stuff renderosity and daz would probably be the best places for them.

Hi nysalor. I already have posted some free texture set for DazStudio here at renderosity (In the free misc section). The textures are included as there are my one work but if you do not want to include them in your package but only the material settings preset it could be tricky as you will not have the textures necessarily at the same location as all the other users.

He's talking about D|S settings for the standard texture sets, so the textures will be in the standard locations (barring accidents). It would be like the Mat files included with Aiko and Hiro for applying the standard DAZ texture sets to include the extra material zones on those figures: you would have to have the relevant product to use them.
