Well my start to a new Prop for Poser which will eventually end up free (as soon as I figure out how to do it in less poly's (I keep running out of memory)). Not the final texture either, it's just the basic one from 3DS Max.

What's that ... you say that your props are plagued with excessive polys? Try Doc Geep's "Magic Box" for fast, Fast, FAST relief !!! cheers, dr geep ;=]

I'm modelling in 3DS Max, not Poser :) I've concentrated too much on the detail is the problem and I forgot to Use instance rather than copy (it's pretty much a basic shape copied a lot of times).. I'll fix it no worries :)

As dr geep said, simpler parts don`t really need a lot of polygons.

starmage ( ) posted Sun, 02 October 2005 at 7:13 AM

Wish it was that simple.......... lol But the grooves are cylindrical, not square. This is where the problem is being caused. I'm currently in the process of recreating the base part in low poly. I'm actually aware of what needs and what doesn't need low polys. I've been doing some modelling for a game so I've had a bit of a practise at this :) Should be sorted soon.

Sorry that last post seemed a little grumpy.... Think it comes from me breaking the mesh a few times already tonight! Grrrrrr..... But here's a close up of the base board structure so you can see what I mean by it not being cubes. The furrows are cylindrical which is adding a lot of poly's to the count. I'm working on reducing those and then using instances because this is the basic building block of the design (I used Copy last time).

I couldn`t see a lot of the detail on the first picture, it looks almost like an alpha channel. It would be easier to see the details if the object was a lighter colour.

starmage ( ) posted Sun, 02 October 2005 at 7:54 AM

Yeah that's okay :) Am working on it at the moment. Coming along much nicer now and a lot smaller on the poly count :) This time I've left the pecies seperate so it's a bit easier to work with the mes (deleting polys).

You don't need to model grooves. A displacement map would give exactly the same image with only one polygon per rectangle.

I recently made a prop of a framed painting with a nice rounded frame entirely out of a single poser one-sided square. Here is a piece of it showing in a scene I'm working on.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
