Given the recent glitches accessing Renderosity these past few days, and how unnerving it can be to lose access to favorite sites, I thought this might be of interest to everybody. It's an article about who actually "controls" the internet and how that's changing globally. Food for thought.

Erm, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble here, but I control the internet. Yup, me. I also invented it. Scary, ain't it? Go on, prove me wrong. :D

yikes! i may have complaints about this current administration, but the u.s. at least gives lip service to privacy and freedom of expression.

Stonemason, you do all those incredibly detailed models AND you control the internet? When do you find the time to sleep?

Zulu9812 said, "remember that Dr. Who episode about the dude who owned the internet? He got killed by a Dalek..." That would be Henry van Statton (sic). He had teams recover alien technology, reverse engineer it and then patent the designs. BTW, he wasn't killed by the rogue Dalek, but his obsession to keep the travel machine and mutant intact lead to the deaths of over 200 personnel in his employ. Afterwards, his right hand person, Goddard, ordered Statton be memory wiped, "reprogrammed" as a junkie and tossed upon the streets of a random city starting with the letter "M". Sincerely, Bill

In the recent past, I've read articles about just how vunerable the entire internet would be to attack. By terroists or others.

Blow up a few "backbone" centers, and the entire 'net could crash for an extended period of time. Given the amount of world commerce & communications that occur across the internet these days -- that's a potential catastrophe just waiting to happen.

What to do about such a threat? Surround each backbone hub center with its own small army for protection, I suppose. Uh-huh.........

Perhaps simply build a lot of back-up hubs -- just in case. The only problem with that plan is that it would cost lots of money to implement. But it might be preferable to the alternative.

There's some overall domain controlling-type (wrong terminology, but you get the idea) servers that resolve names and domains and stuff..but it's like asking who controls the weather..;)

"n the recent past, I've read articles about just how vunerable the entire internet would be to attack. By terroists or others." Why they would want to attack the internet?, if they blow up the internet how we will be able to download AlQaeda movies?

"..but it's like asking who controls the weather..;)" Not quite. The weather is controlled by the big dude with the long beard and white robes. He just thinks he controls the internet.
