Subject: items for poser all work in Daz studio

clarkking ( ) posted Sun, 16 October 2005 at 9:02 PM · edited Sun, 26 January 2025 at 6:33 PM

I noticed something here at renderosity that I would like to purchase, it was clothing for v3 but the read me file discusses opening the clothing creator in poser or something like that, and all I have is photoshop and das, oh and bryce and maya. Does all poser content work in das studio with no problem? Thanks just wondering. C

Most of it does, usually. But none of it is guaranteed to.

Poser 5 and 6 have Dynamic Hair and Clothes that will not work in Studio. An earlier version of Poser used a special file format for Bump files that can't be used by Studio. Best bet for compatibility is stuff that works with Poser PP(Pro Pack). Some of Posers lights work differently then Studio's so Poser Light sets often won't look the best.

Most DAZ models were made for use in Poser, so generally this is not a problem. However, Poser has its kinks and so does DS.

Basically, DS has a better surface and lighting control, and you will need to tweak some of the figure's surface settings to get optimum results.

DS doesn't (yet?) have the dynamic hair capabilities that P5 and P6 have - but DAZ models generally don't support these features anyway - in fact it seems that the wayward path of P5 and 6 was one of the prime reasons DS was created in the first place.

Some models can come in with weird transparency or other settings - if something is loaded but not visible, check to see that its opacity hasn't set to 0.

I've had very few problems overall, even with the Beta versions, and the extra tweaking is usually well worth the effort in terms of superior renders!

What item are you looking at? If it mentions the "Cloth Room", then it won't work with D|S, as it's a dynamic clothing piece. "Clothing Creator" is a stand alone utility (as much as I can tell) by PhilC that creates meshes for use in Poser's Cloth Room or Set Up Room.

clarkking ( ) posted Mon, 17 October 2005 at 7:10 AM

it was dynamic clothing.

Also, items made that use Poser magnets (like some of the As Shanim clothing) also won't work properly in D|S.

still slightly confused.i am truly a lowly noob.Basically I'm looking for figures and props.Any help in clarifying would be most cool.I am a bit dense.Alas my artistry will hopefully make up for my density.

If it doesn't say it's dynamic, or a Material Room setting, then in most cases you should be fine.

Basically if a product is advertised as P4/Pro Pack compatible (as almost all of the DAZ products are), then you will have very little or no conversion problems.

If a product is advertised as being for P5 or P6, you may be able to use it, but if it features dynamic hair or dynamic cloth you will not be able to use those features. Renderosity, RDNA and Content Paradise deal more with P5 and P6 figures, but these are often sold with P4/PP compatibility as well. Read the product page carefully before buying.

Having said that, DS is not Poser. Things work differently.

  • Poser style magnets don't work. DS has its own deformer plugin that does similar things, and most products that use magnets can be tweaked by other means such as scaling or invisibility.

  • DS lights work differently. You can import Poser lights, but the effect is not the same. Mind you, the DS lighting system is so intuitive, powerful and easy to set up, I find myself redoing Pose lights as a matter of course.

*DS cannot (yet?) utilise the dynamic cloth and dynamic hair that is a feature of P5 and P6.

  • DS has greater surface control. Most figures designed for Poser (to date, all of them), require some tweaking to render to maximum potential. Reflection, ambient and opacity settings can sometimes import with weird values. There's a learning curve to this, but it makes for superior renders.

  • You can use Poser camera settings, but the DS cameras are superior and intuitive. Like the lights, I tend to dump Poser imports and redo them.

  • You can use Poser Poses, but to get maximum utility, resave the pose in DS. Then you can employ DS's uber-cool partial pose system. Its the opposite of Poser - you load partial poses rather than save partial poses, and its very powerful.

  • You can import and merge Poser scenes, but cannot export DS scenes to Poser.

nysalor, Could you possibly explain a little more about what you said above (see below). Maybe a step by step :-) (I'm pretty familiar with DS) * You can use Poser Poses, but to get maximum utility, resave the pose in DS. Then you can employ DS's uber-cool partial pose system. Its the opposite of Poser - you load partial poses rather than save partial poses, and its very powerful.

If you want to use only part of a pose, say the right arm, then select the parts in the scene, hold down cmd/ctrl and double-click the pose preset: in the dialogue that pops up choose to apply to the selected items only.

Ive had a customer report that D|S chokes on big props -- props that work fine in Poser 5 and Poser 6.

Best regards,

While some P5 & P6 items work ok in DS ProPack items work the vast majority of the time. DS isn't meant to support P5 & P6 though I've heard that P5 items may be supported in the future.
