THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Controversial - will this cause a flame war?

Gog ( ) posted Tue, 25 October 2005 at 5:21 AM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 5:22 PM

But I think the Hot 20 is full of excellent stuff, congrats to anyone who's in there - they're well deserved :)

I'm not all that impressed with much of it ... but "Oliver" which is at number 1 at this moment, is one of the most brilliant pieces I've ever seen. The theme and execution are both top flight.

Could be worse, could be raining.

Why you controversial little snit! Why'd you have to go and start a flame war. You know your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberry! I fart in your general direction! ;)

For those who don't recognise humour, the above tirade is indirectly quoted from a Monty Python sketch

PS - Oliver IS a brilliant piece of work!

There is some that is deserving but,...........there is some that is,.....how shall I say this and remain politically correct,.........absolute bovine scatology.

ROTFL, Oliver is truly excellent, strange, I was watching the holy grail the other day!!! Of course by this point (5 hours later) the top 20 has probably changed anyway......

Sacrat, I think you mean "bovine scat" .... "scatology" is the study of scat. However, you're still absolutely correct. Politically or otherwise.

Could be worse, could be raining.

..."bovine scatology", rofl...grammatically correct or not, I'm SO using that on my friends. AS

My little brother is a scatologist. When we are out hiking he has to inspect every little poop he finds to determine the source. He was probably a dog in a previous life. I am really itching to say something about the Hot 20, but in the interest of keeping peace in Bryceville I will not.

We sell (I work in a book shop) a book called The Drivers Guide to Bird Watching. When you windshield gets hit, you can determine the bird that was guilty from the picture in the book. Sorry, are we getting off topic? :-)

Actually,.....to give credit where credit is due,....it's a paraphrase from General Norman Schwatrzkopf,..........During an Operation Desret Storm news conference he was asked by a reporter to characterize a statement by an Iraqi General who said the Coalition forces were being beaten back on every front, he said "I would characterize that statement as bovine scatology".

A new flame war? Ok, I'm absolutely bad tempered today, nothing works as it should be and so I'm right in the mood for something like this. Ironic modus on: But why complaining about the spheres, you are considering the whole subject completely wrong. We all should be more than happy about these few spheres. Why? Just imagine our sphere artist would come to the excellent idea of increasing her output to 10-15 pictures a day (should be absolutely no problem for an experienced artist, you know). And the gallery would be full of it. Completely. Not to mention the H20 list where you could admire a collection of 20 extraordinary good spheres ... inspirating! Ironic modus off Sorry for this, but today the H20 are, except of 'Oliver' and 4 or 5 other pictures, not really a breathtaking event.

Dann-O ( ) posted Tue, 25 October 2005 at 9:00 PM

Well the hot 20 consists usually the top 5 which are usually great, and the bottom 15 which is a mix of those going to the top 5 and the people who have many voting friends.

Man,, YORO hit the nail on the head.. If the majority here "gets" it... why is the h20 still so sad? Just wonder.. Hit that VOTE button people!! Only you can prevent forest fires.

Ohh wrong thread.. only you can prevent a bad H20! ;-)

It only takes 7 to 9 votes on average to get into the Hot20. That number is based on years of observation, the bottom few pictures always have only 7 to 9 votes.

There are 11 posters to this thread so far.

VOTE

Not only for the pictures you feel are worthy of the Hot20, but for every picture you like.

Those pictures get into the Hot20 simply because there are a dozen or so people who either like them, or who vote for that artist consistently.

If you want to change the contents of the Hot20, you have to vote for the kind of pictures you want to see there. By giving up on the Hot20 and not voting at all, or by only voting for those pictures that you feel are 'worthy', you are in fact lowering the bar.

It's a popularity contest, not a select panel of judges. VOTE.

Well since everyone is being sooo PC about the whole thing (I hate that) and considering that I have little to fear being one of the "background artists" (artist term used loosely) and most folks don't even know or care that I or my renderings exist on R'osity, I'll be happy to stir the pot - :) When it comes to the H20, rankings and posting quality in general these days - It just goes to show you how far trailer trash and teenagers with warez copies of Bryce and PS, a few spheres or ripped off models, stock tex's,bland skies and no effort can go with a pocket full of extra logins and some sycophant friends. I long for the good old days when posting here meant something other than what it has obviously become. "Snap" as the kids say these days. The pissed and are welcome to curse me out in the comments of my renderings cause...well.. I don't care, I post for me not for the ego stroking... :) M

Btw, one thing about the Hot20, and I know some of you have heard this one before, but...

...we are working at getting an advanced "algorithm" in place, which will govern which pics get into the Hot20.

(I know some of you may have seen this discussed in the forums before, or even as a promise from us staffers to look into it).

I'll go out on a limb and say it will happen, it is coming. I guarantee you it will not be as soon as we all want it, but the staffers want to see it in place as much as you all (believe me).

If I were to take a wild guess, I MYSELF would like to see it in place before 2006 is half over. As it is technically out of my hands, we'll just have to see when it comes, it could happen before that.
