Yep. I feel your pain. Like it would kill them to save to 3ds. format when offering a freebie. :^)

Bandolin, .max are scene files and 3ds is model format. Thats why you cant open them.

Gotcha. So, why do they save them as scene files when they have them as free downloads in the models section? That's what I'd like to know. In others words if you don't have Max, you can't use them.

Hi Bandolin one of the issues is that 3ds is also a very old format and has a poly limit of 64k polys per mesh, it's remarkably easy to hit that and if you do it means either breaking up the model into pieces (possibly requiring some re-mapping of textures), resetting the xforms and saving to 3ds, or being lazy and just saving to Max. Max will also carry overe camera and light set ups if the originator wants to, 3ds will only carry the model details.

I think some people post scene files, because the files are ususally a lot smaller in size than an exported model. For example, i have a cinema file that is 2.6 mb as scene file, and the exported model is 390 megs.

Yup, exploded. Some others (and I myself) have had some luck with taking the converted max file, and converting it again, into some other format. (I had a 3DSMax using friend take the max to .3ds for me, and I would take it into Crossrods and export it out as a .dxf or .cob, and then into Bryce) AS

One thing I always suggest is to download the free Max 8 demo. It's fully functional for a month and during that time you can download and spend the next month converting as many max models as you can find.

Many of the free models on Turbosquid are in .max format. Which doesn't seem to be the same as .3ds format. I can't get Bryce or Wings to open this file type :-(
