I've hit that error too. Originally I had thought it was that jpeg2000 or whatever, but photoshop opened it as a normal .jpg with no problems.
I haven't run into that error; you might want to put in a tech support ticket and attach one or two of the files for them to look at.
I think you can save .jpg files with different profiles. The most common one is "baseline" profile I think. This is NOT the compression setting, but rather some sort of profile. Photoshop has 3 options. Baseline, progressive and some other one. I think Vue (and actually a lot of applications) only supports baseline profile.
Sounds familiar, we ran into that problem with images saved in JPG format from PsP, if the "Chroma Subsampling" was changed from the default setting, the image would only load into a few programs. Opening the file and saving with the default JPG Chroma settings solved the problem.
Chroma default in PsP = "YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)"

I have a series of jpg texture files that Poser 6 is working with OK. On import, most all of these come in fine, then it comes to two hair textures which it fails to recognize with: Unable to read... invalid or unsupported file format jpg I tried loading the jpg into PaintShop Pro, resaving it and also reducing it's size. This error presists and I've no clue why it does not like these two jpg files but brings in all others OK
