Look it, there's no question in my mind that Blender is a Fantastic app even if it weren't free. But I went through the first tutorial (I think it was creating a man out of cubes) and afterward I couldn't remember how to make a cube. Really convoluted.

Right now I just use it for a few modeling things. It's got pluses (discombobulator, boolean metaobjects that can be converted to exportable objects, and converts a boatload of formats to other formats) and some minuses (the interface..what can I say?..;) and trying to do everything (modeling, animation, rendering, etc.)..but it's free. I think you can still get it at this site.. and there are more good free programs out there than you can shake a stick at..except for things like Bryce..you almost don't have to buy anything..;)

My 2p worth. Blender is good but a heck of a lot harder to get to grips with than some of the others. Wings3d is much easier to use and the interface is clean and simple. It comes down to personal choice and while i am still getting to grips with blender I think it will be used for somethings where as wings will be used for others. The key is appropriate use - use the package that best suits your needs for a model. I still have not worked out which is which btw.

I LOVE blenders UV unwrapping tools.Good stuff.I fail to see how it's difficult though, it took me maybe 3 days to pick it up.The interface is slightly yucky, but the tools are high quality.

@ haloedrain Thanks for the link, I did venture over there yesterday after doing a search on it. :) Seems like everything in graphics, its down to the user and its benefits. Some people just become experts in their chosen programme, and its developed from there.

I don't thinks it's a case of people not having looked at blender, it just doesn't suit everyone. To quote another forum, '3d apps are like underwear, most people try a few to see what they're comfortable with - not always what looks good!' Personally, I'm not keen on blender or wings, for a free package I use C4D CE. (Although I'm lucky enough to own full versions of Max and Maya all be it old ones - so most of my models are done in Max)

I think its alot less frustrating if you just use the sofware of your choice and not waste time evangelising it to others. its OK to be enthusiastic about a program but brow beating people over the head with it repeatedly just makes one an annoyance and often times subject to ridicule.
